Free Cinema 4D CE...? legality..?

i have seen many here talk about getting a free/inexpensive, though powerful 3D program.
I have a free version of Cinema 4D CE...that can be upgradede to Cinema 4D XL for around 120 $
The thing is that i don´t know if it´s legal to distribute this CE version... It is not available anywhere on the internet, and i got it on a 3D world magazine CD.
And i can´t se how maxon is going to lose money on me distributing it.
I just wan´t to know what you think of the legal issues, as i won´t upload it anywhere if it´s illegal.

And then there were silence.................

I'm not sure it's expressly legal to redistribute it, but equally I don't think anyone's going to complain if you do. Versions of Strata 3.1 (free version) have been uploaded by several board members in the past without problems.

that seems sketchy in the legal area. you might have to do some research.

It's absurd that they should have any problems with you distributing it, therefore, do not do it.

I know it's absurd, but people such as this get very touchy when it comes to software. When it comes to redistributing, it doesn't matter whether or not you got it for free, but rather the facts that

a: the license was granted to you after you requested it
b: the person who you intend to redistribute it to, in theory, was capable (and probably still is) of downloading the program and a password free himself
😄 that the software was entrusted to you, whether or not you actually payed for it or not

I wouldn't take the gamble.

a: there is no license as i remember...just a version without all features...you can buy all features for around 120 $. It requires an update, not just a liscence
b: The problem is that you can only get this on 3D world CD..as far as i know.
😄 I payed for 3D World magazine,..But maxon probably payed them for putting their limited version in there.. And i think they would be more than happy if i get more people to use and hopefully buy their application..

Cinema 4D CE also has a Mac version -- it came free with MacAddict magazine in appx November 2003.

The 3D world magazinehas both a mac and a pc version.

And since strata 3,1 has been uploaded i´ll think i´ll take the risk..But only if someone wants it.

Well, how good is it? I've never really like C4D, and if it lacks animation capabilities, it's pretty much worthless in any EV-related application. What exactly does it have, and lack? What operating system? How fast is it, in both rendering and normal operation?

Yeah, from what I remember CE lacks any animation features. Its basically Cinema 4D 6 with the animation module cut out (if I remember correctly). I cant remember whether it is X native but I would severely doubt it... I'll not be downloading it anyway, I had C4D 7 and absolutely hated it. Cant stand it in the slightest. Horrible interface and general ickyness as far as Im concerned. Its not my cup of herbal tea!

CERD has done some very impressive work with it though, and many people swear by it. I guess I just dont like its style... 😛

Ops...there was a serial code..and it´s temporary.
And animation is included...actually i can´t figure what´s missing..
hmm maybe i´lll have to look bettewr into the legal stuff..

If it's not freely available online, then you probably aren't licenced to redistribute it. Whether its owners would complain is anyone's guess, but that's the legal status.

It definatly has animation capabilities, at least basic ones. Enough for EVN ships. I've used it.

I started out with the C4D R8 demo, and as far as I can tell, the only difference between that and the R6 CE is that one of the control areas is missing, and those features are accessed differently. Oh, and the CE lets you save, which the R8 demo doesn't.

As for speed, its fast enough for my purposes, but I don't really have a basis for comparison.....C4D is the only 3D program I've been able to do much with.

**It's sketchy legal territory. You see it one way, as in "they won't lose money on me distributing it" whereas they might see it as "he's distributing our intellectual property." We all might agree on the nature of the argument (as in, they do give out free copies themselves), if not the letter of the law. So unless you're sure about it, I wouldn't take any kind of action at all.

If Maxon wanted you to redistribute the free CE version, they would've put up a free version for download. That they haven't!
I suggest you do not put it up for download, as the cover-CD serves a purpose of advertizing for C4D, rather than distributing it. I seriously doubt that Maxon payed the magazine to put their application on the cover CD, rahter the other way around, the magazine payed Maxon to have C4D in their CD.
But of course it all depends on what the license that came with the software says.

But, oh, what a wicked world it was that drove a man to sin.

i wont risk it then, unless somone comes up with some new information.

Don't do it. I think it's only availiable to those who were given licenses somehow. For example I was given a free copy through MacAddict. But I still had to register it to my name using information they gave me. It may have been checked against my subscription to MacAddict. SO it probably isn't free for anyone, just those who were given a copy along with a registration code.
