Creatiing TC Stellar Maps

It's not an easy thing to do if you just throw in values for systems guessing where they go.

I have been using the EV devlopers map (thats the one made, I don't know how long ago for Escape Velocity) I have searched frenetically through the Nova downloads and the TC Map maker isn't the best thing.

I have already done the bulk of my system, but now I want to move things around, and create new things without screwing around with the EV developers map.

I just want to know if there is a good Map maker that was made for EV/O that will work with Nova, and work well. Or when is cartographer comming out?

You could use the public beta of (url="http://"http://www.ariossoftware.com/programs/evone/")EVONE(/url), which so far has a Galaxy and sΛ™st editor working perfectly.

Or you could do what I did for The Ages Trilogy ,which is to grab the nearest copy of Starry Night Pro, and start looking for every last NAMED star in the Galaxy. Took me 10+ hours total time, and I think I still have all the coordinates floating around my HD somewhere...

Suddenly, the little scoutship disappeared and then reappeared right behind the alien warfleet. The gravitic ship's captain hailed the armada. "You are going to be destroyed, but I will give you a choice as to how you want to spend eternity: big pieces, little pieces, or quarks?"
Dead silence.
"Quarks it is, then."

What I've done is to go through about six different stellar maps, all growing in distance from earth, the first was ten light years, then 12 light years, then twenty then fifty, etc, etc, this gave me a pretty good idea on where they all are and what there names are, the only prob was placing them - but i've got most of the glaxy worked out.

But I'll try EVONE, thanks Mantaray.

It only works on 9 and X eh, poor old me and my OS 8.6.

Y'know, like I said, I've still got all those old coords hanging around somewhere, and I could fix them up and email them to you, if you'd like... They're valid coords for real stars, most with real names.

Please download it and try it out on 8.6... it is believed to work but is not listed in the System Requirements because I do not know for sure. If you try it, please post how well it worked here or email me at ariossw@mac.com

It starts up and gives you the 'agree to terms' page but then quits with un error -3 straight after that. oh well. hope thats some help for you.
Yeah spacecowboy that would be cool if you could send me those co-ords, I'm not sure If id use them but it great to have them.

Do you think you could get me a copy of those? i am trying to make the systems as astronomically acurate as possible.

The thing about creating systems accuratly is the Nova stellar map is 2D, the layout of stars is very much 3D and hence their (x,y) coords won't be accurate when it comes to how far systems are away from each other.

Getting the names right is good enough for me.

By the way, has there been any update on TomWoozle's random galaxy creator lately? (most likely not, it's been iced for ages and I cant' find any new info - but you never know, maybe I missed something) Or does anyone know of a similar tool?

I seem to recall David Arthur saying something about putting the "random galaxy" feature in Cartographer at some point, but I'm not sure - maybe I'm just imagining that. In any case, it would be a nice little extra to have in a galaxy editor πŸ™‚

I believe it went onto the back burner some time ago.

I don't think I ever planned to do this or said anything about it.

Ah, never mind - I guess it was just wishful thinking then. You've probably had your fill of subtle and not-so-subtle feature requests already πŸ™‚

Thanks for letting me know. The link has been fixed.

I am sticking to Ambrosia's policy of not predicting releases after I underestimated the release date of the previous beta by about a month πŸ™‚ Rest assured that it is coming, however, and sooner rather than later. I am currently putting significant work into EVONE's ResEdit Template Driver, as that will be the major feature of the next beta. It is currently done, but I am adding a number of very advanced features that will make it arguably better than NovaTools.

There have been so many changes from the previous version that I could not possibly describe them all and there are a number of great new features.

Actually, for fun, lets give a ROUGH timeframe of "before June 1 of this year" πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Following up on (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/003879.html")this thread(/url), will the next beta also have a different way to keep track of the demo period?

It would be nice if, for example, it could be used for a total time of 30 hours (or however long you think it should be), instead of the standard 30 days, regardless of whether you used it in that time.

Yes, that is indeed on the list.

The current plan is to first of all have this beta reset the demo period so everyone can start fresh. The system will then still be limited to 30 days, but it will be thirty days of actual USE. So if you download it, run it, then get busy for a week and run it the next weekend, you will have used only 2 of your thirty days. Comments?

The downside of this is that people could potentially stretch their demo period out to a very long time, but I am simply hoping that if people really like it they will register or donate anyway and it won't be the expiration of the demo period making them.
