    RE: Hyperion Plug

    It's pretty much comatose, yes.

I still work on it when there's nothing more urgent to do, but there usually is. It has pretty much become a hobby project that will likely never really get finished, but keeps me entertained. (And even if it were different, the universe is big enough for two such plugs, especially since they seem to be quite different in scope).

I'd be happy to share some of the stuff I've been up to so far, if you wish. Mostly just ideas and general concepts (and several metric ######tons of brainstorm sketches, of varying usefulness), though a map of a pretty big galaxy design is getting near to completion (just the design, not the actual implementation in EV).

I should also still have my old notes somewhere, with all the worlds etc. that were actually mentioned in the books - those may come in handy. I can also do some graphics work (mostly 2D, still have to learn decent 3D modeling), but I'm not promising anything just yet.

    EDIT:

Actually, it's funny - this afternoon I found myself wondering whether I shouldn't either take down that site, or update it... which is why I checked this board again for the first time in months.
Second time in three weeks I've had one of these webboard synchronicities... weird.

RE: Is Your TC Plug-In Still Alive?

Technically: yes. I'm still working on it whenever I find the time and inspiration.

Unfortunately, that isn't very often and progress has been steady but slow. Watching snails move across the wall would be a major source of excitement compared to watching the current progress on EV:Hyperion. (Never mind the site, which hasn't been updated in months.)

I'll get there someday. I have most of it in my head; it's just a matter of getting it all on my harddrive, and making it work like it's supposed to (which sucks, because I am a pathological perfectionist...)

But anyway, I'm mainly still doing this for fun, not as a second job, and I've never made any promises. So I don't exactly feel guilty. (And if I ever decide to give up on it, I will make my work available here so others can continue or recycle it.)

It depends... I'm currently building the universe (systems and spöbs, while taking into account some other factors like gövts etc.). After that, I'll start working on the ships and outfits/weapons, of which I have a (not yet too detailed) list... Then I'll go back to the universe and implement techlevels etc... OK, there is indeed a lot of planning involved, but it's doable, and setting the stage seems like the most logical place to start when building a TC.

(by the way - to those who thought the Hyperion plug had died again: you're wrong. To those who think it'll never get finished during their lifetime: uhh... well, let's just say you might turn out to be right. We'll just have to see 😉 )

    RE: Weapon Rant

Interesting topic, too bad I don't really have the time to go into some of the things that are being discussed right now... I agree that we should have more of these topics, they're a great source of information and inspiration to plugin-developers.

I've spent quite some time looking for similar (Hyperion-related) material on the net, and the best I could find was (url="http://"http://kier.3dfrontier.com/forums/")3DF: Spacebattles(/url), where the amount of useful information is still depressingly small...

It was supposed to be much thinner, but that made it extremely difficult to render properly at the relatively small scale used in Nova. If it had been done the way ATMOS originally wanted, it would have been almost invisible (or at least look very bad), so they had to compromise.

RE: How do yall come up with planet names?

I use my imagination. I also plunder star charts sometimes. And my TC is based on a novel, so I already have a lot of planet names.

Plus, I'll probably be including a lot of references to other SF works and the previous EV's. It's a bit of a tradition after all.

RE: Galaxy map building: from paper to plug-in...

    Pixels it is then. Thanks.

As for using Illustrator - I guess it's just a personal preference, being a graphic designer. I can set the grid and rulers to display pixels, so it should be pretty easy. Plus, when you already have the software it's cheaper and more flexible than working on graph paper.
