Can I use a tile graphic?

I'm really new to Coldstone and I want to know if I can use a normal tile graphic?

Because now I'm copying and pasting the graphics by hand and it is getting bothersome...

Anyone?

What exactly do you mean by "normal tile graphic"?

Well something like this:

Or do I have to cut and paste every square out?

Hi Servaas SP. Welcome to the boards. When you are constructing your map, if you are using the graphics which came with the app you can just select the one you want and click the map spot you want to put it on and it appears there. There is no cut and paste involved. If you want grass over a large area, for instance, take the pencil tool and drag it around the part you want the grass to be and then use the paint bucket to fill it all in. Ground tiles are found in the art folders named "something base" as in forest base, cave base, etc.

If you are making your own graphics for your game, the ground tiles are usually 96 x 96 pixels (as opposed to 32 x 32 for movement tiles.) All the ground tiles will be on a different map layer than the stamps for trees, rocks, houses, etc. which will be added after the base is done. Frequently one would start by making the whole map grass first and then change the tiles which show river edges, paths, shade, and so on. You can go back and change a ground tile anytime later if you wish.

I hope that helps. ~RD

Hi and welcome to the boards. There's a Coldstone tutorial that you might find useful.

Make sure that your graphics are your own or the set that comes with Coldstone, even if you plan to just give your game away. I could be wrong, but what I saw looks familiar - like Gameboy's Zelda graphics. Just be careful.

Coldstone expects every image to be a separate file, so if you are using a source that groups multiple graphics into a single file, you will need to split them up before you can use them. If you have Photoshop, you may want to look into using its Actions functionality to automate this process somewhat and make it less tedious.

The image you linked to looks to be from the SNES Zelda game - I see nothing wrong with using such graphics as placeholders while you develop your game, but make sure your game is using only legal graphics before you release it to the public.

Well it appears that Nintendo isnt really that hard on fan made games:

But your right, never hurts to be careful.

Is it even possible to make a game like Zelda with CS?
From what i've seen I'm going to have to copy and paste custom tiles (like the one above), so I really want to be sure that I could really make something like this. I don't mind putting in the time and effort but I really don't want to become stranded when I'm half way.

Also I read a little about Game Maker for the PC and is that product comparible to Coldstone?

Yes it is. But you have to realize that your game, IS your game. It can't be like anything else (must be an original idea). And while it will most likely be "like" some others, It should stand alone. Certain ideas, names, and paintings (all art (except the coldstone graphics)) must be unique if you are calling it yours. (yours means you give, sell, donate, ect). As for the game, It would take some work, but if you have a genuinely different game story, then go for it. We will all be behind you.(Zelda is a copyright product.)

Yeap, and so is AppleWorks (though not as closely compared! smiles) It doesn't have the user simplicity that coldstone has. And while it has other "pluses", I think the "minuses" more than make up the justification for coldstone to be my app of choice.
As for doing your game, I can see the whole of this forum being behind you. But I strongly oppose putting hearts or life symbols on the actual screen. I recommend the user interface for that. And while it doesn't look "like" the original, I think that is to your advantage!

Just trying...

Welcome To the boards.Aldabar is right, You should come up with your own idea. As for using graphics and other stuffs on the disk included with CS, I have used 'em and the pics and music from the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/coldstone/addons/")Addons page(/url) and things have worked out pretty good. But to each his own. Word of advice on getting pics from the net: Unless you see it in writing, don't touch it.

I've thought about this before, and I've determined that to make it work, some of the key things that you would have to do would be:

Make each map small enough so that the camera doesn't center on Link.
Use spells to use the items (if, say the boomerang, spell hits, then speed goes to zero for a certain amount of time)
Make the text box smaller than it is normally.
Make globals so that the enemies won't come back if you immediately leave the map and come back.

And so on. But of course, copyright laws pretty much nullify all hope of making Zelda with Coldstone.
