Hi. I have a really stupid question. If I burn a game or a pict file onto a data CD, using my Macintosh, will PC users be able to open it and get the game or pict file?

It depends on what format of CD you use. You would need to set your cd burning program to burn a hybrid PC/Mac cd.

Generally any format of hybrid, custom hybrid and any ISO9660 will work fine across any system. If you use ISO I think it cuts down your file names for DOS etc so make sure you tell it to leave the characters alone by choosing "Allow Macintosh Names".
However when you mention pict files thats a small problem. A pict file is more of a apple dealy than a pc dealy and I remember my friend couldnt open any picts I gave him unless he did so in Adobe Photoshop on his peecee.
Now quicktime may open picts on pc's nowdays but compatibility wise its a small issue. If the pict in question is desktop art go with gif or jpeg. If its a coldstone related file then it might work okay as long as it has the right version of quicktime.

Humm, thanks. I've decided to not only make a game, but have my graphics available also. Not for free, though. Sorry. I suppose I could give people a choice of types of files. I know that my graphics work on Coldstone, though, because I'm using them in my game. I'll check out what it says when it burns. Otherwise, I may have to get more software, what, maybe Roxio toaster, if that's what it's called.

yeah, roxios toast is great but the best test is probably a few peecees with windows 98. pending that toast probably isnt even needed.
if your going to sell a art cd seperate of the game id runthe images through graphic converter or some batch app and make them a more universal file like png, or the dreaded bmp.
apple 'cd burner' is free(and most likely included in the r-r/w equipped Mac). upon entering a blank cd into the drive, it asks ou to name it, select a format. It then temporarily allots(subtracts) the amount from your HD space. Basically drag/drop all the files onto the cd.
on your 8/9x systems the option to burn is under the special menu, X.x.x it should be under file...in any version you can attempt to trash/eject the blank CD, at which point it will prompt you to burn it.

Thanks, guys! When I burn a CD, it says: Standard (HFS + /ISO 9660) so from what you've written I think I'm okay. I've gone and made other files available besides pict files, too. Thanks so much for the input. Now -- if only I can get my game finished!!
Also, my PCs have always had a fit with .pict files. .pct files seem to work alright, however. Both are fine on the mac(they are essentially the same). You might want to consider renaming the extension to .pct to make them more compatible with the PC.

This is very good to know. I did not know that there's a difference between pict and pct. Well, I've always had the extension .pct, which is good. Thanks!

As far as I know, the only difference is that unlike Mac OS 9 and earlier (which don't care about file name extensions, generally speaking) or Mac OS X (which allows filename extensions of arbitrary length, like .pbproj and .graffle), Windows generally expects 3-character filename extensions. Thus I'm not too surprised that .pict causes Windows to have trouble.
