Hi. I made an item called Apple. It's type is various, and can be sold or bought in a shop for 5 credits. In the links, used, I have a change attribute to add stamina by 2 and a change global. I have "take" checked, but not "remember." I also have chosen "normal."
I placed one apple directly in a map. When I tried to directly place another of the same item, apple, the program froze. It will not allow me to place any more of the items I've made, not just another apple. I've restarted my computer several times, and the same thing happens in other maps as well as that one. I've trashed the apple item and have remade it. It still happens. It happens with all of my items.
I've launched and the Player picks up the one apple just fine and moves around the maps just fine.
I'm trying for an apple orchard, you see, so under the apple trees are apples that the Player can pick up and keep, use, or sell.
I have several items in my cave map, and did not have any problems. I am very concerned and discouraged, as I'm thinking that all of my maps are somehow corrupted.
HHHEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPPP PPPLLLLEEEAAAASSSSSSEEEEEEEE!!

Did you check the "Remember" box in the tab where you decide what layer it is on, etc.? I believe that this makes the item unique, so you can only have 1 per map...

In the map editor, are you using the "items" selection from the left side of the screen where layer selection takes place? I have not had problems in placing multiple items on a map with this method. I believe that the items have to be on the same level as the player, but you cannot place anything directly on "Player Level" so the "items" choice takes care of that for you. BTW, "remember" just means that if the player picks up the item and leaves that map, it will not reappear when you come back to that map. If "remember" is not checked, there will be a new apple every time you return to that map.
A second method of placing items is to use "Launch item" in an event that triggers as you enter the map. Because this is your own map and you are not altering an existing map (as a plug-in would do), I think you are better off with the first method.
Try changing the item type to "special" rather than "various" to see it that makes a difference. I don't know why it should, and I might be grasping at straws here, but something is making it not work right.
------------------ My Doctor said I was having too much wine, women, and song - so I gave up singing because 2 out of 3 is not so bad. The (url="http://"http://www.evula.org/rduck/")Kingdom of Garendall(/url) sectional map is easily printed from gif format pages. Find those areas you missed the first time around. You'll want to explore those hidden areas now made accessible with Spells Expander.
Thanks much. Okay, yes, I'm using the "item" check on the left side of the createamap window. I tried the "launch item" in the map location, and that did work. The Player picked them up just fine.
I am still unable to place any more than one item directly into the map. Is there anything about Coldstone that makes an item limited to one map? Before I wrote the first time, I looked through the manual, and it says nothing concerning this.
Am I supposed to indicate which level I want the item to be on by having a level highlighted, even though when you check on "item" you're not directly in layers? I thought that that was what "normal," "behind," etc was for.
Thanks again. I'm not sick-at-heart anymore!!!
I am having this same problem, though, I didn't think too much of it. It is not the item type "various" that is the problem, because my item is a weapon. I don't know if it maybe has something to do with the sizes of the walking tiles being too small or something (although I don't think it is) because my Size, I believe, is 16*16. Any help that you could give Debra would be help to me too.

Nope, not movement tiles. Mine are 30 x 30. Just off of POG's 32 x 32. Are your maps bordered? All of my "world" maps are bordered with other maps, and that's the only thing that's different from my opening cave map. I don't have any access tiles blocked yet in the world maps, so that's not the problem. I tried all sorts of items besides "various," and once I got one placed, it crashed every time I tried to directly place another.
Do you suppose that maybe we found another bug? :frown:
Are your maps bordered?
nope.
Do you suppose that maybe we found another bug?
yup

Is there a bug list somewhere?

"The Unofficial List" is presented by Glenn (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/glennfield/ColdstoneBugs.html")here.(/url) There was a long wish list for Coldstone which included many bug reports, but in a quick search for it, I haven't found it.
Back to the items question. I have just dropped 61 items on one of my maps (mixed up, not all the same) and have no trouble in having the player character get them all. My conclusion is that this is not a CGE bug, but rather some part of the item or map that is in conflict somehow. From what Debra has said she did in the initial post there is nothing I can spot that would be in error, but we don't have the complete file either. One suggestion I would make is to select "back" rather than "normal" as all my items are done that way. This places the item "under the feet" of the character.
Is the maintainer of the list still active? It is as if his site is abou tto close.

Maintainer of the unofficial coldstone bug list? That would be Glenn. And yes, he is still active.
Or are you talking about Dee, the lead developer at Beenox which created Coldstone? His activeness is a matter of debate and speculation...

Debra,
So you are able to get multiple items placed on your map with an item launch event, but not with the map editor's item level placement? Hrm...
Your freezes, they are happening in the map editor? Or does this only occur when you play the game after building it?
If it is in the map editor(which it sounds like), how much memory do you have allocated to Coldstone(unless you are running in OS X)? If you are running in X, try under Classic and see if the problem goes away. Also, try adding your apple, switching layers(go to layers or events), add something else(doesn't matter what), then go back to the item layers. Can you add anything else or does it freeze again?
Btw, before you start mucking around too much(especially with switching between classic/X mode if this pertains to you), I highly recommend backing up your work. If you haven't been doing this on a regular basis, best to start.
The freezes are happening in the map editor. I recently increased the memory, before the problem occurred. I do not have the capability to work in OS X. I tried placing an item, then switching to layers, than back to placing an item. No go. Also, if I place an item, save, quit Coldstone, and go back into the map editor, it still will not allow me to place another item. When I try the game, the Player picks up the apple just fine. And everything else works fine.
I'm at work during the day, and I have my game at home, so I won't be able to try anything until this evening.
I do not have the capability to work in OS X
I only work in OSX, so it's not a matter of system. Lemme think.... Debra how big is your map? That's all I can think of right about now. P.S. Stark, I'll try those things.
My world maps are 30 x 30 movement tile size by 150 x 150. I'm maths illiterate, so I don't know how large that is. My cave map where I don't have any problem is larger.
(edit) I have a medieval game here at work with nothing added to it. I use it to test graphics I make sometimes. It's displaying the same thing. So it's not my particular game.
OgreBob, did you download a newer version of Coldstone that David gave you to fix the registration bug?
(edit again) I just got through building a new game from scratch, the medieval game. I changed nothing except give an item a picture. Same problem. Did the same thing with the tutorial. Same problem.
Do I get to name the bug?
(This message has been edited by Debra (edited 04-23-2003).)
ahhh. Indeed I did. Maybe that could be the problem? We'll have to have a nice little talk with ol' Davie.
Debra appleseed? We could even write a song about it...

I'm afraid I haven't had time to update the bug list in months, as I've been rather busy with school and with "real life". As far as I know, all of the bugs listed there are still correct (that is, none have been shown to be merely user error), but a lot more bugs have showed up since then that I haven't gotten around to adding to the list.
