Wally World Plug!

You should have something for the evil-doers...

Maybe a parking lot where you can join a gang of shoplifters... Then sell the goods to wal-mart to make profit...

Wait, maybe not. I liked that idea a little too much... now I'm banned from wal-mart for life. And sams... and hometown grocery... whatever that is. Plus, I can't shop in wal-marts in canada either...

But perhaps you could get missions to buy an iPod for the lowest price. Or race to the frozen foods section.

I would love to be able to dominate the lounge or what ever you guys have. Or maybe even the meat proccessing sections could be forbidden... This sounds soo cool.

chuckle Dominate the lounge? What sort of nefariously cruel bastard are you? I can see you, ibob, just standing at the doorway. "Sorry, guys, if you want to use the lounge, you have to pay me tribute. And hey, before you start thinkin' about heading out to the smoking area, I own that, too."

I was doing some thinking while working at Wal-Mart - I was actually pondering what other types of 'ships' I could make. And I realized I left out the most important one... buggies! Or for the non-Wal-Mart employed, shopping carts. And who pilots the shopping cart? Why, the Customer on the Shopping Cart! I still haven't come up with a suitable 'matching' ship for security. But hey, no one likes security anyway.

What type of iPod mission? "Head to the Electronics Department and pick up 10 pounds of iPods, and return to the Parking Lot by 14:30. Don't be noticed by security, or this mission is a failure. Pay is 5000 credits."

"You have 20 pounds of frozen jerky you must get to the Frozen Goods Department by 16:00, or else it will thaw and go bad. Pay is 10000 credits."

Stuff like that?

Can I change the system settings so instead of showing days, it shows hours? Hm...

Yes, there will be a parking lot, where all the junks (at least, all the junks I can fit on a trade window) will sell for higher prices. However, security is pretty high in the GM and Grocery Entrances, so make sure you have the Multi-Jog Engine installed... er, I mean, make sure you are wearing your Running Shoes.

As for that trinket of technology transfer (say that three times fast), there will be 'normal shoes', 'jogging shoes', and 'running shoes' instead of Multi-Jump Engines. However, while wearing running shoes will make traveling faster, security will be mightily annoyed if they catch you running in the store. They might even start punching you. Heh, heh.

Still trying to figure out how I would allow people to pilot their crafts without interfering in the 'unarmed primarys' idea I have. Maybe make the crafts just serve as escorts, and you never upgrade from the basic... nah, that'd be uncool.

Hm...

With a fair amount of work, yes. Unfortunately, the simplest way of making things look right (truncate all months to 24 days) causes timed missions to turn into pumpkins at midnight.
Still, I'm pretty sure I've got a working day->hour conversion plug lying around. I could send it your way if you're interested.

Edwards

Be very interested, thanks. Ya got my email from the board? (citsonga underscore mastermind at yahoo dot com)

You may have registered a few minutes ago (longer at this point, but same idea), but I already like you, just because you are awesome.

If this guy is awesome, that makes Qaanol Awesome™. Right?

Qaanol is far mroe awesome than this guy, whatever this guy is.

I'll settle for being 'slightly less mediocre than usual', if that is fine by you. =D

As for the plug updates (ha!), today is my first day off from work this week. Tomorrow will be my second. So, therefore, on my days off, I will be working on Wal-Mart, instead of at Wal-Mart. Yeah, I have no life, right?

Anyway, for the team, I am looking for:

CODER: Someone who knows how to keep everything coherent - I don't want the dude(-ss) Lingerie Model to accidentally wind up in the Freezer system. (Actually, wait, that wouldn't be too bad of an idea, heh heh.)

GRAPHICS: Okay, I'll admit it, I can't draw worth a junk resource, and furthermore, my most expansive, amazing, top-quality 3D object EVER MADE... was a primitive. And I didn't know how to convert it to a mesh. So... yeah. I'll be taking a camera to work as soon as I can afford a camera (aka, next Wednesday, aka, payday.) for the Landing Pics. Heck, might even get some of my cute (female) friends to model for these pics. Wearin' their Wally-World vests. Oh yeah, I see a fetish coming on.

PLOT: This is mainly in the form of decent suggestions. I'll be the judge of decent... but, if you submit something like "Omg, make the main mission taking over the store and becoming President of Wal-Mart and making friends and stuff!" then I'll probably rate it as 'most assuredly not decent.' Plus, I had already thought of it, and now I have to change it so it'll still be a surprise. Damn you!

JOKES: So you work at Wal-Mart, or you know something about Wal-Mart you'd like to make fun of? I'll take your joke and make it work! Of course, if you consider things like "Omg, Wal-Mart doesn't have the best prices, wtf lol!" to be a joke, then please don't bother submitting. I already had to change the plot because you second-guessed me, don't make me have to change the jokes too.

EFFORT: So you actually have energy? Let me be like a vampire and suck the raw vitality out of you, so I can wake up earlier, work harder, and get this plug out sooner! Notice: some fang marks may appear, and do not require medical attention. Please consult a doctor for more details.

OTHER: If you think you can do something that I can't, well, you can't. But you can submit things to me, and I'll take the credit, and everyone will laugh at you when you say it was your idea! So, what do you say?

Sorry to be so vague, hope this gears up a team for me! (Oh, and I can do all this myself, I just don't think it'd be a good idea for me to solo it.)

Also, anyone know of any editors for EV:N other than EVNEW that can be used on Windows? Or if I could... er... acquire (through extravagant and of questionable legality) an emulator, and use that to make plugs without serious compatibility issues? I'd very much like to have more tools available to me than just EVNEW, in particular, I believe I heard of a program that can be used to create the galaxy (as in, syst resources) as though looking at it from the (M)ap? Like, click here, this X/Y coord becomes a new syst, click here, this X/Y coord becomes a new syst, click first syst, shift click second syst, creates link? Or anything remotely like that?

Or am I stuck with EVNEW until I upgrade from Windows to Macintosh?

Looking forward to starting it, hoping there are tools out there to make it easier, though.

There aren't any Windows editors other than EVNEW.
For emulators, check out the Just Tech board. However, it would probably make your workflow cleaner to just learn to work with EVNEW- no problems with transferring files in and out of the emulator, and no problems with conversion.

Try EVN Cartographer. It apparently takes a bit of work to install, and is somewhat unstable, but ti's better than nothing. Also, back last July there was a guy working on an Excel-based system editor (see this thread), but I'm not sure if anything came of it.

Edwards

The Cartographer is really useful, but I obviously didn't know the store's layout as well as I thought I did... because I've only got three systems done before I'm thinking, "wait, does the lounge go by Grocery Receiving, or does it go by the Lockers, or is it closer to Infants, or maybe..."

You get the idea. I'm gonna try finagling a map from work. =P Then, once I have the map, I'll be both able to use that as the nebu resource AND I'll be able to draw little circles in each one, use grid paper, stuff like that. Geez, who knew that TCs were so much work? (reads all the other posts, and releases this isn't exactly a new statement) Gah.

I'm also getting tempted by the game too often, for some reason seeing EVN Cartographer open makes me want to play EVN. I've already beat the Pirate Storyline, the Auroran Storyline, the Polaris Storyline, and the Vell-os Storyline. So far, my favorite was the Polaris, although I agree with most people that the plot is slightly forced down your throat in serving sizes designed for a god. (And gods go through a lot of calories, believe it or not!)

Although, then again, the Pirate Storyline pissed me off for the opposite reason. The Polaris Storyline was all "You are a god, they couldn't touch you!" whereas, in reality, you were floating by on your last 10% armor when you landed. In the Pirate Storyline, it gives me "You pause a moment to mourn those who won't be flying with you anymore, and then order your remaining escorts to join you in combat." while all my escorts survived with at least 90% shields, because the Unrelenting is just THAT powerful. Who am I mourning? The repair droids that fell in combat? Nah, because the other repair droids repaired the damaged repair droids!

I think the same thing happens in the Auroran Storyline, with you crying when members of your Pack die, even if they all survive the battle. Seriously, would it be so hard for them to set up an invisible misson that fails if any escorts die? Then, depending on whether or not you succeed that misson, send you a more appropriate mission text?

One last beef - that mission where you have to board that one guy (I believe the Set Trap mission), was I the only one annoyed by the fact that you are a) in the Unrelenting 🆒 have 6 powerful escorts c) are in a place where Feds jump into the battle just for giggles? I had to do that mission about twenty times, ordering my escorts to ONLY attack Feds, and leave the Pirates to me. Even then, there were a few times where I would see the Pirate jump into the system, and almost immediately at the bottom of the screen, "Mission Failed!" would pop up. And then, if by chance you actually manage to board the pirate ship without the Fed's destroying it, you suddenly have the entire screen filled with red dots, and your escorts are still on V Formation, so right when you hit the Jump key, ever Viper and Carrier in the system starts launching stuff at you?

Bah.

At least I'm learning from the stock scenarios. Never tell the person how they feel, never tell them specifics of the battle unless it actually occurred that way, and never give them Xenocidal Escorts for boarding missons.

For that matter, I'd like to know if a bit can be set by having your armor fall below a certain level. It'd certainly make the difference in terms of realism. Example:

At 0% shields, 10% armor - "You stumble into the lounge, about to fall over dead. Your boss looks up and says, 'So I guess that means you are still alive? Fine, I'll give you another mission.' You glare at your boss."

At 100% shields, 100% armor - "You waltz into the lounge, cheering loudly at your own immortality. Your boss looks up in suprise. 'You aren't dead yet? That mission was supposed to get you k - I mean, time for another mission.' You glare at your boss."

Also, what are the bare requirements of a TC? I remember seeing a blank plug with all the basics in it, but I don't remember where it went. I'm currently working from scratch, but I don't know at what point it will become 'playable'. Is it playable as long as it has a govt, ship, a planet (and system), and char? Or does it need more than that? Like, for instance, str# / strs, do I need to steal those from somewhere?

Bah.

My 'day' off ends in 7 hours, so I'll probably by sleeping it through. But q/c/c are always welcome.

Love from Wal-Mart!
Mitschu

AbsoluteMinimum.

EV Nova Resource ID Guide will tell you which resources are actually required for the game to run.

You guys are amazing. =D

If by 'amazing' you mean 'pathetic and lacking an actual life', then yes, we are. Welcome to our deranged corner of the universe (heh, realized just after that that it fit the name of the forum :)). Enjoy your stay. Free valet parking on thursdays if you have fish for lunch.

Thank you for the lovely, if somewhat eye-opening, greeting! I will most certainly enjoy my stay. However, I am allergic to fish. Therefore, Thursday runs a bit of a problem for me. Unless, of course, someone is willing to park my hearse on Th?

https://midnightoil.kicks-ass.net/ doesn't work - so, whats this Sephil Saga? Come on, spill the dirt.

About my plug, I'm currently running into a few developer issues. Not programmer's issues, god, but I'd love for a few of those. I'm still in the development stage, alas.

Right now, I'm thinking of running two different modes, available by chosing between different char files. One would be "mission mode", with the relatively simplistic mission of getting promotions so you can acquire more ships, before finally becoming President of Wally World. This mode would focus more on the player, making him choose upgrades (for money is sparse between missions) wisely in order to get through the game in one piece. The second mode is more power play. You start out with all the ships available, but they come with exhorborant prices. However, money is easily available to people who trade between departments, and without pesky quest interference, you can get a lot more accomplished.

Different types of missions I have in mind (correct me if any of these are impossible):

Trade Missions: Relatively simplistic, like normal trade. Take 1-100 pounds of Resource to Department by Time Limit for Pay.
Attack Missions: Whether it be beating up thieves, or taking down security, or just whalloping on everyone's least favorite manager, these missions pay you well, but entail the risk of death.
Barricade Missions: A little trade, a little attack. Get a certain amount of goods into a department past a largish assortment of enemies. Pays very well.
Destroy Department: Espionage is fun, but sometimes it just pays to make sure that a department won't be producing goods for any certain period of time. Pays incredibly well, but a destroyed department can take months to regenerate itself, possibly causing a gap in your trade route.

Stuff like that. I'm also thinking of CBLs, but for those who do (and don't) know what those are, you'll have to wait until later. Time for me to go work the 8pm-7am shift. (Gotta love that overtime.)

In cases like these, we offer Tuesday as a substitute if you have spaghetti for dinner.

https://midnightoil.kicks-ass.net/ doesn't work - so, whats this Sephil Saga? Come on, spill the dirt.

It's an upcoming TC that prides on realism and innovation. Revolving planets, Newtonian physics, the ability to build your own ship (including the tough task of balancing it), keeping track of the player's abilities and personality, a very dynamic universe, different-style mission strings (the same events happen, just from a different perspective), and a heaven-and-hell-esque end (if desired) are all planned. Some members (RMX and Dr. T come to mind) may have something to "add" to this list; I would respectfully request that you shut up. If you're unsure, please PM me about it first.

Basically, the team consists of me and a bunch of guys who used to be active but aren't anymore (and one person who is semi-active in the EVN.net member lounge - also, I think one person is active in the BnB). For a rather outdated site that you'll have to live with until I finish the new one, check here.
