Hi,
I'm currently in the process of creating an application called JobTracker , and I was thinking of creating a special version of it including lots of Nova stuff and extra's. And version just for the EV Community. I might even drop the price abit. A description is below, basically its an application that allows you to keep track of time you worked on a job(plugin or ship, etc...) and it helps keeping things organized.
Now I was wondering if there was a market for this, if anyone would buy it if I make the special EV version.
Description :
JobTracker 1.0.0
JobTracker makes it easy to keep track of the time spent on any and all of the jobs you may have. It allows you to start and stop individual timers for each job and enter blocks of time when you were away from the computer. By allowing the entry of comments for each time block and keeping track of your hourly rates, JobTracker makes it easy to print out complete transcripts of your work. JobTracker is currently in early development and will be available for both Mac OS 9 and OS X.

I dunno... seeing as very few of us bill the time we spend on plugins, it sounds somewhat pointless

Its not just to bill it , it helps keeping thing organized .Look of it as your personal very-advanced progress log, with alot of extra's and stuff for the EV developer(thats a more down to earth description) .I'm going to use it while creating my plugs. I would find it quite useful(yes even if I didn't make it).
Hence the topic.
Entarus,

I'll pass judgment when I see it, but I still can't quite see how a detailed progress log actually helps your Nova plug progress.

Thats what this topic is about. If people don't find it a good idea, I'll re-consider creating an EV version of it. Of course I'll have to talk about this with my publisher.
And this topic is called: Market research , an imporant part of marketing and it saves me some work if the response is bad.

This sounds like a good idea.
My favorite part, not having to write your own progress logs.

I am getting really mad at ev-nova.net asit seems to want to be particular on who sees the site.
I think Yahoo Groups has been just about a godsend for organizing our development team- I think it can do everything your product would, especially with a little creative use, and it's free.
It's a good idea, but I don't think there's a market, at least for an EV-specific version. Considering all the uproar about having to pay for EVONE, I'd hesitate to try to sell to this market. I think all that would change if we could somehow profit from our plugs, though. I'd pay $5 for Polycon, I think it's worth it, and Ambrosia would still get it's cut; but I'm just rambling on, now.

If it was free, I might use it. Since it isn't, well the chances are slim to nil. You have to realize that most of the members of this community are fairly young and those of that aren't don't often feel the need to spend money on what is otherwise a very cheap hobby.

I think it's more important to spend time working on a plug than keeping track of how much time you spend working on a plug.

Hahaha, stay tuned for some interesting news on that front in the coming weeks. (No, it is NOT what you are thinking.) Of note, I discussed EVONE's pricing (or the possiblity of the lack thereof) thoroughly with the members of this board in the early Spring of 2002, and as a result, the uproar was not as much has it would have otherwise been.
Sorry, Entarus, but I sort of agree with Mazca and mrxak - since plugin developers can't charge for their plugs, they don't really have a need to keep track of their time.

Ha ha! Well said! I think Entarus was just trying to slow down the development stage for everyone else's plugs so that he could release his first(and if you don't have a plug in progress thats because it's being kept secret until its release). But, to stay on topic, I don't think you'd get more than a dozen or two people who'd pay for that. A noble idea but one that isn't very practicle.
------------------ I like long walks, especially those taken by people who annoy me.
I think the main reason not many people are prepared to pay for that sort of thing (i might pay for EVONE at a pinch depending on how good it is) is because they know they're never going to get the money back through the plugin regardless. I mean I wouldn't buy Lightwave or Maya or that sort of program when I'll not use it for anything other than plugins and the occasional assignment so despite their brilliance I don't have any great need for them when I can get a perfectly good 3d program for free. Sure it may not be up to their (Lightwave/Maya) standards but it'll do me for what i need. So without a great demand or need people aren't going to buy it (or it could just seem that way to me, hey I'm only 12!). Anyway on topic. No, I don't think there'll be a great demand for it.

I don't buy software because I can't afford it. It has nothing to do with profit.

I don't buy sofware because I've got about $65 (Aus, so about $35 US) that I can actually spend on anything. And I know that if I spend it on something for a plugin, than I've just wasted it. it wasn't so much to do with profit as knowing there is no point in getting it (the software) because you'll find away around it. Like I had no graphic programs until i found out one of my friends (thanks Andrew) had a copy of Adobe Photoshop. I got Strata 3D off Ewans Lair. These aren't as good as the new things (Strata is version 3.02 and photoshop is version 2.5.1) but they will do.
