Project Ares: Override

Just to add a few points, the North Tip, South Tip and Strandless will be combined. They're nearly identical in their roles and tech and I see no reason why they should be divided into seperate categories. I was also originally thinking about joining the Miranu and Zachit (as Ragashingo had suggested) into one government, but I think I'll give them seperate government slots in the end complete with perhaps a few extra ships. We'll wait and see.

Also, it looks like I'll be back to work with the AO graphics within a few days (although perhaps not at as rapid of a pace as before). Running Infini-D on a minature monitor is very annoying and time-consuming, and a G3 processor almost doubles render time. Ack.

**

Heh. Think if you had to answer all those questions... πŸ˜› How will they be combined? Does this mean Human Renegades no longer totally suck, giving easy kills? Noo! Which extra ships? If you can take ideas, these would be cool to see:
1. Miranu Heavy Freigher that is fast instead of ultraslow. As fast as a Courier, so its not dangerous to use them anymore. And even better defended. How about 2 Phase Turrets and 4 Defence Pods+ 20 Defence Pods?
2. Miranu Gunship in use of Zachit without missions you need to do now. With 30 SADs, it can smash Crescent Warships, which Zachit Aradas cant do. It would fill a much needed gap of being unable to defend anything better than Lazira.
3. Zachit Heavy Fighter that comes with 4 Dispersals to smash shields. Why dont you buy a new G4 and larger monitor (you didnt say how large it was) then? πŸ˜› Dont have enough money?

First off the Human renegades and Crescentish renegades will be seprate. The Human renegades never were easy kill, all you saw was one battle, one battle that I beleive was rushed for time as I had to leave.

But I was speaking about EVO. There, even a Freight-Courier (a UE civilian vessel) can kill a Turncoat if it sacrifices one Hunter launcher for more Hunters and get one extra Blaze Turret. The third turret means it will stay alive after fighting three Kraits, and then it can pummel Turncoat with Hunters. If a civilian ship of a weak government can kill a Human Renegade capital ship, imagine how good Crescent ships would be? But thanks for the ansver anyway. Probably the Ares engine is different, so the battles are more difficult even with ST Renegades?

Its not that Human renegade ships are tougher its the fact that they cost less than some of the most races. You can get maybe 3 Turncoats for a UE Destroyer...

I see. But was it adjusted in Ares? In EVO, it costs 1.5 million. Only 500.000 less than a UE Destroyer.

From what it sounds like, you haven't played Ares before. A lot of these type of questions could be answered if you familiarized yourself with it. You may as well download it now because you'll need it when A:O is released. πŸ˜„

Cade, in Ares you can't outfit individual ships, so your point there is invalid. Ares is focused on building and commanding in battle fleets of default-outfitted vessels, not your own beefed-up single ship that can wipe out a planet's defense fleet.

And speaking of beefed-up ships, will there be any super-powerful NPC vessels in the missions, like the U.E.S. Incontrevertible, or the whatsitsname amazing super-powerful Turncoat from the Captains of Freeport string?

Take a line from any Star Wars movie. Replace certain words with 'spank':
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Spank."
"Queen Amidala is young and naive; you will find spanking her not too difficult." "And what of the Jedi?" "She should never have brought them into this. Spank them immediately."

Mmm... I didnt know Ares had completely different ideology. I read its description on Games page, but was never interested in it. Building and commandering fleets. Aha. There is 2 pers in Captains of Freeport string. Pride of Freeport (I like that name. Brings atmosphere). It is armed with Rockets and loads (hundreds?) of Needles. And one that you have to kill, which also has Rockets.

I'm getting further into Ares now. The first two missions are distinctly EV-like, but later on it really gets hairy. I don't think my question was entirely answered, will a big A:O ship take a half hour beating like EV, or will it get blown away from a few seconds of concentrated fire and a few homing pulses?
I sure hope the UE and Voinian cruisers are bigger than Ares' tiny little cruiser thingy.

Ships will blow up just as quickly in Ares: Override as they do in EV: O. For the most part think of a battle between two ships in EV: O that you know who the winner would be and the ammount of time that battle would last. The winner and amount of time will be very close because all the ships have the same health as in EV: O and all the weapons do the same damage.

Ares and EV: O had vastly different ideas on what a cruiser or destroyer were. Ares: Override like in everything else follows EV: O in ship types and sizes. In fact because we have rerendered and remoded the orriginal EV: O sprites we have given the larger ships an ever greatet size distinction than you see in EV: O.

So in as many ways as possible its becoming EV:O, with increased "escort" control, the ability to build "escorts" on the fly, network capability, and better scale? When its done we better mention it in every "will EV be networkable" FAQ then.

Yes.

Right now Captain Skyblade and I are working on multiplayer only levels. If I'm not mistaken we will not be doing a single player campaign, madfax7 I believe is finishing out his plugin he nearly finished to be single player.

Ares inherently with the exception of really fancy plugin programing is only a battle in one system game. That means for the most part no jumping in and out of systems or anything like that. But we plan to do level that include everything from near standard Ares net levels all the way to two player "historical reenactments" by which I mean things like two player Battle of Sol, or Defending that Zidagar station. So while the term multiplayer EV is used don't expect system maps and planet desc but rather a variety of fun multiplayer scenarios some of which will be based heavily on real EV: O battles.

We will get single player too, great! Will they new EVO style missions? Thats shocking... it changes the fundamentals of how EV works! No hyperspace anymore... horror! But it will mean much easier too, you dont have to go to dozens of systems or hunt it if it wasnt told. Defending Zidagar station (Outpost Terapin) wasnt told anywhere in the game, just in a Chronicle. Only Battle of Sol is in the game. Why not? Because its not fitting in game engine? Heavily based on EVO battles... Yes! I cant wait to trash Adzgari only with the speed of my 5 Phase Turrets, and rain SAEs over Adzgari Aradas and Warships.

Theres quite a few great battles in the game history though, like the defeat of numerous worlds by the Voinians, the liberation of Emalghia, and the battle in which the planet Azdgari was turned into a poisonous deathtrap. Not to mention the battles the player takes part in, like the destruction of Ekiup and capture of Ekiup Station, the massive battle when all three strands clash at Outpost Terapin, or maybe even some limited ships per side missions, like UE Destroyer vs The Nadir, UES Earth (Cruiser) vs Voinian Dreadnought, or Azdara squadron vs Igazra. Missions such as that are possible on the Ares engine aren't they?

All of the one you mentioned are doable but not all of them would be fun. For instance a Igazra vs Azdaras missoin would be quite boring as the AI Azdaras would get themselves killed and then it would just be an Azdara doing starfing runs the Igazra until either the Azdara pilot made a mistake and died or the Igazra was killed like 30 minutes after the start of the battle.

For reenactments of battles that took place before the EV:O plot (Battle of Sol specifically), will there be consistent tech levels for those times? i.e. In the Battle of Sol there were no U.E. Carriers, and I'm not really sure if there were even Hunter Missiles, so the Destroyers would just have rockets.

And do be sure to include the U.E.S. Valkerye and the 12th Destroyer Brigade! πŸ˜„

Yes, tech levels will be consisten with the times... And what is the U.E.S. Valkerye and the 12th Destroyer Brigade?

Good memories... too bad we never finished that series. But you're probably thinking of the "When the Voinians Came" webstory I hosted here - Battle for Sol was an EV forum trilogy.
