Eve of Destruction

Voinian Empire
With the lack of responce to the message sent to Earth, the Empire started working on new weapons to be used against the Earth Navy. Shields -the only real strong point of UE ships- are the only reason they have not been killed off yet. An age old technology was to be put into use. Work began on an EMP emiter that would disable any electric functions aboard UE vessels. The downside is however that in order for it to disable the computers enemy vessels the EMP had to be activated within 5 km. The Empire's ships being slower than their counterparts made this a considerable problem...
------
Fridion
A Voinian Fleet gathered. Soon a strike would be made against the only race to have escaped the Empire's grasp once it was in place.
------
Pax
The spy from UE space takes refuge on Pax, and waits for a Cruiser to pick him up to take him to Isled. He looks out the veiwport and watches a pair of frigates bear down on a Human Destroyer trying to out run them and smiles. A moment later a bar brawl brakes out and through the commotion a small group of Voinians rushes the spy out and onto the Crusier. They all take off toward Isled.
------
Čn Route to Isled
A Patrol of 4 Fighters and a destroyer dog the trip to Avann where the battered Cruiser is forced to stop due to a fuel leak. The Cruiser launches it's compliment of fighters, but one heads to another cruiser in the system -the V.E.S. Annexation - at maximum speed. The Annexation 's fighters cover the the spy as he is brought aboard and head for Isled.
------
Isled
They Arrive safely and the spy hands over the schematics for a UE Carrier's shield generater.

Insanity has its advantages

(This message has been edited by U.E. Admiral (edited 12-06-2002).)

OOC: Solel, you've made an impressive number of equally impressive posts, and I must commend you for it. I would, however, like to know more about the cloak you're designing (tell me on "New Life", okay?) Particularly, what are the downsides to it. Obviously, a cloak without any downsides is invincibility.

South Tip Conclave

The Mavs system was busy with activity, and had been for the past two weeks since the Conclave had liberated it from the renegades. Its main ISO (inhabited stellar object) was Outpost Sentinel, previously known as the Histiri Station. Conclave ships and independant traders moved to and from the space station in large numbers, and more Conclave vessels made regular patrols around hyper-exit points of the system, vigilant.

Overall, the past two weeks had marked an important turn of events for the Conclave. Once little more than the dream of a great nation, now their dream was starting to become true, and what had happened here, only 15 days ago, had made the difference between reality, and an endless dream.

With the expanded territory of three planets and three stations, the members of the Conclave had abandoned their ceremonial capital of Alpha Nexus in Vardamaught except for monthly meets. Beyond that, meetings were to occur in hyper comm. VR environments, and not always necessitate the entirety of the Conclave being present. Made possible by the sensors on Outpost Sentinel, which were more powerful than those on Bakoom by a small amount, near instantaneous communication could now be made between the Conclave's four systems, rather than needing to send a courier. Any messages to Bakoom, Hrinix, or the "outside world" had to be transferred from Akrayhek to Mavs first, but the process was much quicker than a courier to Bakoom. At a remarkable pace, the makeshift government that was the Conclave was turning into a more organised society. With eighty Kayan natives, four Kayia-born Strandless, and electives from Bakoom and Hrinix's former government (not any from Histiri Station, obviously, although people situated on Outpost Sentinel serve as the station's official representation.) Now numbering over three hundred, the Conclave had formulated and elected among themselves an even higher place in the hierarchy, to serve as advisors for Mathuin, recently retitled Premier of the Conclave. Thus, within the Conclave, twelve were elected to serve in the High Conclave. Among them were Varian, Taikaenor and Kataon.

The industrial and economical boom after the battle was massive. With the completion of the orbital shipyard Nachaurrez, and with the shipyards on Outpost Sentinel now operational, the productive capabilities of the STC were greatly increased. The new industrial machine was pointed towards developing Infinity Threshold.

Infinity Threshold, originally suggested by a Bakamese Conclave member, Taketa, was to be an underground research facility on the planet of Bakoom, working separately from Deep Isle. While Deep Isle specialised in enhancing and modifying existing designs, Infinity Threshold was to serve as a science lab for the conception of entirely new scientific projects, pioneering efforts into the unknown.

And then, a number of Miranu ships arrived from the other side of the known galaxy...

When the two Miranu freighters and one courier hyperspaced into Mavs, in flawless unison ten Crescent fighters swept into their flank in a protective escorting position. To the Miranu, they were Crescent fighter-shaped shields, the ships beyond undetectable, but only for a moment, before the fighters lowered their shields simultaneously, along with every other Conclave ship in the system. It was, unfortunately, impossible to turn the shield's new masking feature off without turning the shields themselves off. However, it was a symbolic display of trust.

It was only a few moments before a message from Outpost Sentinel was received by the Miranu ships.

Miranu representatives,

Welcome to Outpost Sentinel, previously known as Histiri Station, the focal point of renegades in this area. I am Varian, one of the twelve members of the newly formed High Conclave, and I have authorisation to greet you and see that you make a safe docking with this station.

Your gift is accepted, and the Conclave has been considering for some time how we make go about returning the favour. While we believe that out shield masking technology, which is the means by which our ships cannot be penetrated by sensors, should remain ours alone for now, and we hope that you keep your knowledge of it to your own government, we are currently working on enhancing phase weaponry, which we believe your ships utilise. If in any way, this technology would be useful to defend your interests, it is yours once we have completed work on it.

Please feel free to dock as soon as is convenient. We have much to discuss.

(- end transmission -)

Upon docking with Outpost Sentinel, the Miranu's high councillor Neve Ashak was met by the aging Kayan Varian. It might be of some note to Ashak that the Kayan species was surprisingly similar in physical figure to humanity. Lines on the skin seemed to be a sign of age among the Kayans, and Varian's hair was a silvery grey, with the remnants of a dark red colour left in it. His eyes were crimson, which seemed to be a normal colour for the Kayans, and he stood only slightly shorter than the average human male. One other note that Neve Ashak might have made was that while the Kayan workers in Outpost Sentinel's docks seemed to wear something resembling a uniform, Varian's clothing did not seem particularly uniform, even without anyone else of his rank as comparison.

"Greetings, Councillor Ashak," Varian called to him upon his departure from the courier. "Welcome to Outpost Sentinel, our primary frontier outpost. The Conclave bids you and your kind a warm welcome. If you would come with me, we have much to discuss..." Varian led Ashak to a rather ordinary looking room not far from the stardocks.

"The Conclave's goal, since it began, has been thus. To free the South Tip from the renegade threat, and to unify this region," Varian explained. "As you can see, we have achieved both of these goals in the last few months, or very nearly. Obutes still needs to be dealt with, and soon. Their tyranny must end. We have new goals now, however, recently established. The Kayans are particularly interested in ridding the known galaxy of unconstitutional, anarchistic and unjust societies. Renegades, pirates, criminal groups and the likes. Our war is over... but other people still fight it. In addition, we also seek to end the Strand War by peaceful means, and to bring the Strandless together." He paused. "I don't know much about Strandless history, but they have been too long scattered remnants, clinging on against all odds against renegades. It is time there is a fourth Strand."

"...but enough with that," Varian ends, a slight smile on his face. "Councillor Ashak, in order to better understand the Miranu government, perhaps you could reveal its goals and principles, as you know them? It would be unwise to engage in further diplomacy are we to discover that our ethics or long-term goals are incompatible. Rest assured, no matter what ethical boundaries may exist, we will do our best to cross them, and we will under no circumstances be a threat to you."

The Igadzrans arrived in Duidir and gazed at the hundreds of fighters on the other side of the system. The scanners were almost purely red with enemies. The ships took no time to fire all SAEs and Berserkers possible. After launching as many as they could, space had over 640 SAEs and over 45 Berserkers flying towards the Azdgari. The Igadzra then knew that this battle couldn't be won, as 150 Azdaras launched from their bays. They turned around and went back into hyperspace. As the projectiles got to the fighters they... zoomed right past them. They almost went strait past the Aradas. When they came to the warships, though, it was hell. The SAEs hit first, wave after wave after wave. There was a brief pause, in which Berserkers slammed into the Warships, sucking even more shields out. By the time the last few waves of SAEs came, the Warships were out of shields. The SAEs tore through the Warships armor, exploding. Even though at least a hundred SAEs went astray and hit nothing, the Warships were gone. All that remained were the hundreds and hundreds of fighters, with no motherships to return to.

The Igadzra fleet will be back in Norhis in 1 day.
Another fleet will be in Himgrow in 2 days.

State of the League : Internal Document

With the annihilation of the Leagues primary threats, the Renagades of Neslaut having been obliterated recently, and the apparent destruction of the Renagade force based at Mavs, the League has had to expand its priorities. The Leagues purpose was to make safe the area for strandless, from their kinsfolk who targetted them. With this done, the Leagues new objective is to secure all people against threats. With the Igadzra to the north, and the Azdgari blocking off access via a side route, expansion must proceed to the west. A signal recieved from the west, apparently from a 'Human Empire', previously unheard of, alerted the League to this danger, and the League will finish this threat off before it can spread.

The Navy will be ready to move out once its repairs and refitting is complete, although it is not clear yet if the new long range delivery system will be operational in time.

Mira

Corzun Dah had received the intriguing message from the Strandless Redemption League, and was overjoyed at the thought of another trading partner. All the people in the galaxy are beginning to see the wondrous gifts awaiting those prepared to embrace the ways of free trade and unrestricted commerce. He quickly composed two messages to respond to this new situation.

We are pleased to know of your intentions and willingness to open trade. Also, know that we commend you on your admirable actions against your renegade threat. We will be attempting to follow your example shortly. A representative of ours is already in contact with another South Tip government. We will contact him and notify him of your presence, so that he may facilitate negotiatios with our people.

Sincerely,
Trademaster Corzun Dah, Miranu High Council, Mira, Miranu Star League

Honored friend, I have been informed that there exists in the South Tip another government other than the Conclave. They call themselves the Strandless Redemption League. The SRL has informed me that they have, like the Conclave, rid themselves of a renegade enclave in their space. When you finish negotiating with the South Tip Conclave, I urge you to make contact with the League and open talks with them about commerce agreements. Follow the standard procedure.

Outpost Sentinel, STC Space

High Councilor Neve Ashak was a Miranu with high standards. He had grown up on the medical world of Himgro, and his family had instilled in him at an early age the responsibility of giving back to the Star League. Considering the Star League's history of achievements, the goal of donating something original was no easy task to Ashak. Now, as he looked over the Conclave outpost, he couldn't help but be impressed. Spur-of-the-moment calculations told him all he needed to know about the tenacity of these remarkable people: they had taken this station against tremendous odds, and must have paid dearly for it. Two heavy freighter loads of starship materials must look quite appetizing to them, he mused.

His thoughts were redirected to answering the Kayan's question as his memory nudged him into action. What could the high councilor tell the Conclave about Miranu society? Perhaps I should just tell all, he decided.

"The Miranu Star League," began High Councilor Ashak, tapping his left temple once, "is a union of fourteen separate star systems. Each one contributes one high councilor to serve on the High Council, the most influential governing body in the Star League. Each system also elects twenty senators to serve in the Mira Senate, our domestic legislature, which handles all mundane matters not related to research, foreign affairs, or matters with consequences that would affect the entire Star League. Our goals are simple: We wish to promote peace across the galaxy; we work to protect ourselves from outside aggression, especially against the irksome North Tip Renegades; and, above all else, we intend to continue our long history of being a science-oriented and engineering people by continually researching new technologies and probing the universe for its secrets." He looked up at Varian. "Are these goals compatible with your own?"

In a communicator buried within Ashak's right ear, he received the message from Corzun Dah and filed it into the recesses of his perfect memory he designated for near-term future reference. He would address the details of it later; the high councilor had to complete his current assignment first.

Station Pybin

"The Nebula Penetration Device is fully protoyped and complete!" shouted Pilot Qo'wek. "I call a meeting of the NPD Steering Committee. Let us meet at once!"

A group of six caste members immediately hurried to begin the meeting. They were all eager to begin a new chapter in Miranu history: the exploration of the Ji Nebula. As the group settled into their seats, the red-robed Scientists sitting between the Engineers in their blue and the green-attired Pilots, Scientist Loeugith called the meeting to order.

"We have in this station the key to the door of a chamber containing many of the universe's mysteries. We must not waste it. It must be used with the utmost care and with the highest caution, but let that not stop us from being eager to discover what it can show us. Friends," continued the Scientist, "the Nebula Penetration Device will lead us to new frontiers. For millenia we of the Miranu have only wondered at the possibilitied open to us, waiting for us, in the Ji Nebula. Let us boldly march forth and claim our destiny inside its wondrous depths."

No cheers, no clapping, no applause greeted this statement. The Steering Committee had already celebrated their achievement, and was now focused solely on acting by Loeugith's flowery words. Even now, a Ra gunship was being fitted with the NPD, and Supreme Admiral Shek Sunrunner had promised to Station Pybin that he would remove the hated roadblock to the nebula's secrets.

"As the Scientist said," announced Engineer Aenig, "let us claim our destiny!"

South Tip Conclave

Varian paused, considering the Miranu he was talking to carefully. After some time, he turned around and took several steps away. "Your nation does indeed sound like a just and righteous one, but there are... problems. You have to understand - we mean no insult, but we have learnt to be cautious." He turned back to Ashak. "There are two species within the Conclave, and we each have our story to tell, and our lessons to learn from it. For the Kayans, this is a story of thousands of years of feudal and territorial conflicts, countless bloodshed, disputes, wars, battles, treacheries, betrayals, and the like. And when we finally began to realise, some time before the Strandless came, that what was happening was wrong... we couldn't back out of the war. The web of alliances and vendettas is complex."

"What happened," Varian continued, "was that one of the nations of Kayia, the Akryians, began an operation designed to stop the conflict once and for all, with as few people dead as possible. A mass assassination, of all the other nations on the planet, regardless of alliances. I don't think even the Akryians expected it to go so well, but the assassins their training programs created were flawless. For that level of technology, anyway."

"I'd hardly call our past morally right, but since the Strandless arrived, and indeed after the Purgings - what we now call how the Akryians ended the wars - we've begun to repair our ways. But we learnt something from that. We learnt that conflict is inevitable. Somewhere in this galaxy, there is a conflict waiting for us to walk into. And somewhere in this galaxy, there is conflict that will walk into us, no doubt. We avoid the former, and protect ourselves against the latter."

"Allying with your nation raises questions," Varian explained. "For example, are you entirely trustworthy? Forgive us, but we are hardly primitive. Up-to-date encryption codes tend to be impossible to crack, but we do know that you received a message, assumedly from headquarters, only a few minutes ago." He smiled slightly. "We're a wary people, Councillor Ashak, and for all the ferocity with which we right for what is right and just, we are the first to crawl up into our little shell at the first suspicion."

"So I must ask of you some other questions. What is the message that you received, for one? And secondly, have you told any of nation of our existence, or perhaps sent them the data on our location which we gave to your government in confidence? And finally... the most difficult of all, perhaps..."

"Why did you send this gift to us, and why are you so eager to meet and ally with new species and governments? What are your criteria for an acceptable ally? How can we know that your government has not naďvely allied itself with another government, whose intentions are not so pure? Consider our position here. You offer us a gift. Let me tell you something."

"Twenty seven times, the trojan horse tactic was employed. Twenty seven times that are recorded, and on Kayia alone. The death tallies are over five hundred thousand from them all. Seven nations fell."

"And of those twenty seven treacheries, fourteen of them were from nations newly met, where one eagerly offered a gift to the other. I am sorry to show such doubt, Councillor Ashak, but we will not - can not - risk the lives of our people so. Our trust is not easily won, but when it is won, it is yours, forever, undyingly, and we shall lay down our lives for you if you need it."

Am I posting in Just Chat or B&B;? If so, I'm probably joking.

Mindule reviewed the newest designs for ships.

"Very good... I don't suppose that you would be able to finish these anytime soon?"

"No, with the shipyard at Norhis destroyed, we won't be able to create any new ships soon. However, with your permission, sir, we can begin work on creating a new shipyard, on this very planet. In fact, it will be the biggest shipyard to date."

"I see. When do you think that this new shipyard will be completed."

"It would only be a matter of days... technically, we are just adding on to Igadzras main shipyard, but with all the new additions, it will become very productive. It will only take about 4 days, and then we will have the very first Igadzra Carrier prototype fully operational."

"Very good. Now, what about the newest branch of the Berserker Torpedo?"

"Well, we have managed to create a sort of Berserker mine. Yes, it doesn't sound intimidating, but it packs a punch. The mines are almost invisible to rader, because they are so small. They don't even output a lot of energy, because they don't turn on the shield until they are right next the enemies shields. Very silent, very deadly."

Mindule and the scientist walked down a corridor until they reached a door at the end of the hallway. The scientist put his hand on a control pad, and the door slid open.

"Behold. The pride and glory that is the Igadzra Carrier." There was a huge skeleton of a ship sitting in the gargantuan room. It was much larger than an Igazra, and looked somewhat like a Crescent Warship.

"Activate the hologram." Suddenly, beams of light flew around the room, and color flew around the skeleton. When the color died down, the huge ship was complete. It was orange and had yellow paintings on the wings. Then, the hologram shut off, and the skeleton was back. Mindule grinned in awe.

"Amazing. Who would have thought that such a thing was possible?" He walked away, his mind still lighted with the magnificent starship he had just witnessed.

Saga of the Guild: Chapter 15

Outpost Sentinel, South Tip Conclave Space

Neve Ashak nodded in understanding. He admired the thoroughness in the Conclave negotiation doctrine, and could not help but smile when told of the detection of the trademaster's message. He turned to look Varian in the eyes.

"I will repeat, the Miranu are an honest species. As you have made a logical and justified request of me, I will oblige you and present you with the message the Trademaster sent me." High Councilor Neve Ashak wrote down on his datapad the following message as he recalled it from his memory.

Neve Ashak looked up from the datapad and said to Varian, "From this message, I read that my Trademaster also contacted the SRL. If you wish, I can bring up the exact message he sent them by accessing the Miranu High Council Archives." Varian gestured for him to proceed. Ashak quickly entered the encryption key of the Miranu archives with his body concealing the datapad. Varian smiled when he noticed the new caution the Miranu negotiator was exhibiting. Ashak turned back to face him and handed him the datapad. It had on it the following message.

—End Message)_

High Councilor Neve Ashak wringed his hands in anxiety for a moment. "I see as well the point of controversy. Trademaster Dah mentioned to the SRL that there was another government in the South Tip with which we are in contact. I do not believe the Trademaster would have divulged your location to the SRL, and when I opened talks with them I can assure you that I would not have gone against my word to earn your trust. Also, you will no doubt also find disfavor in the fact that I had not yet mentioned to you our knowledge of this Strandless Redemption League, of whom I know nothing other than what these two messages proclaim. I do hope that these points do not immediately sour our relationships, and also I wish that this be mitigated by the fact that I brought this information to the fore immediately. Whether this is a good show of caution, or if I have merely thrown it to the wind by Kayan judgment, I cannot tell. I will now address your other question," promised Ashak.

"You ask why we are willing to contact you, why we offered our aid when your government told us of your intentions to destroy a renegade power. Forgive us for this action, as it lacked your sense of proper caution. It did not occur to us that you might have heard of us , the Miranu, and knowing that we hated renegades you might have sent that message in an effort to pirate supplies we sent. Now, take no affront from this speculation, for I am merely trying to come to a better understanding of the Kayan caution doctrine. But the reasons we contacted you are manifold. The Miranu consider ourselves lucky to have advanced as far in culture, government, and technology as we have with quite a marginal amount of conflict involved. Granted, we warred millenia ago to take hold of the systems which compose the Star League, and there is no question that the war helped boost our research efforts," admitted the high councilor. "However, we wish to ally with other nations such as yourselves if they express what we call the Will to Peace. This concept, which is difficult to explain in such a short time, involves the species in question to begin by expressing interest in opening trade with other nations. Another aspect involves a desire to remove distasteful and harmful elements from the galaxy, such as your action against the renegades. When you spoke of the Conclave's wish to end the Strand War through peaceful means, it only served to confirm my own view on this, and added weight to my own drive to establish trade negotiations with your people. We sent the aid because we knew, from our own experience, that attacking renegade outposts is a costly and dangerous endeavor, and that many ships and lives were likely to be lost forever. We wished to express our support for your cause against the renegades by sending replacement materials for constructing more starships to swell your depleted ranks so as to make you less vulnerable to other potential threats. You are welcome as always to inspect Miranu cargo ships in your space, including the two heavy freighters carrying the supplies as well as my own personal negotiation courier. If these assurances do not sway your opinion of us, then perhaps I will need to show you Miranu space in the near future," stated Ashak with absolutely no hesitation. "The choice is yours."

Potent monarch of the Voinian people, we will require more information on the terms of such a commerce or trade agreement between our two nations. The Miranu have become a more cautious people of late, and we wish to confirm the intentions of your government in this matter. We are dispatching one of our most insightful citizens, Negotiator Avaritia, in a Miranu negotiation courier to speak with your government.

Research: Miranu Cloaking Device: The MCD works on the principle of a one-way cloak. Namely, the Miranu cannot be seen nor detected by enemy vessels and sensors, but the Miranu still have the ability to use sensors to see outside the cloak. Extensive research will allow weapons to be fired from the ship while it is under cloak. The downside is that the cloak drains fuel, and once all of a vessel's fuel is consumed, the cloak suddenly deactivates. (Begun: 12/6/02) (End: 12/13/02)

Project: Lightninghammer Missile: Utilizing the recently acquired plans from the Zidagar, the missile will be based on the following design. A pursuit missile chassis will be equipped with the Miranu-modified warhead, keeping the same speed and accuracy as the original missile at the cost of increased mass. It can still be fired from the standard pursuit missile launcher. It will weigh 2 tons and causes both moderate shield and armor damage. (Begun: 12/6/02) (End: 12/9/02)

OOC: I am tempted, after that last post of yours at Diudir, to treat your ships with as much contempt and ignorance as you did mine. I, however, will play a fair game. I'll make reasonable attacks, I'll take reasonable losses, and I'll give my enemies the benefits of at least basic tactical ability.
----------------

General Sarn Treval was one of only five Azdara pilots in Azdgari history of the Empire to rise to the command of entire Azdgari fleets. While most Azdgari pilots either didn't survive to high rank, or retired once they couldn't fly in combat anymore, a very few went on to become instructors, or even more rarely... Fleet Officers. Although technically still a part of Starfighter Command (once an Azdara Pilot, always an Azdara Pilot) Sarn hadn't flown in combat in over 50 years, but that had yet to slow down his military career. In fact, he was probably one of the foremost experts on stafighter tactics in the galaxy, and was far from being a slouch when it came to commanding the larger ships.

At the moment Sarn was observing a small chronometer count down the seconds until reversion from hyperspace. His flagship, the A.I.S. Judicator, along with 24 other Azdgari Warships, 30 Azdgari Aradas, and 20 Azdaras were about to emerge into the Mark System, where the first stage of the fall of the Igadzra was about to begin.
------------
Mark System

The Azdgari fleet came out of hyperspace and instantly deployed their fighters. After only a few seconds 170 Azdaras were buzzing in what looked like utter chaos, while the Aradas separated themselves into three groups, 20 of them in a screen in front of the Warships, with the other 10 split between the two flanks. As soon as they were organized, the Azdgari accelerated full blast towards the Igadzra, who had formed a pyramidal defensive formation.

As the two fleets accelerated towards each other the Azdaras broke from their chaotic mess and formed three groups themselves. One group of 70 to keep a screen to back up the Warships' center formation, and two groups of 50 helping to define the Azdgari flanks. As soon as they were in range, the Igadzra launched berserker torpedoes and SAEs, but at that extreme range the Azdgari had plenty of time to dodge most of them. The two sides next began to exchange Dispersal Rocket fire, the Azdgari focused on the Igadzra Aradas, destroying two, while the Igadzra managed to kill a few Azdaras. Then they were on top of each other, the two capital ship formations met in a flurry of phase weaponry and dispersal rockets. Focusing on eliminating the Igadzra Aradas as fast as possible, half of the Azdgari Warships, along with their fighter screen, focused their new Phase Burst weaponry on the smaller ships, quickly overwhelming them with hundreds of rapid fire phase bursts and destroying 75% of them in a matter of seconds. While this was happening the two flank formations swung inwards and began to initiate a pincer movement on the outnumbered, and slower, Igadzra.

Entire squadrons of Azdaras swarmed around hapless Igazras, while the Azdgari Aradas fired salvoes of Dispersal Rockets into any Igadzra ships that tried to form compact defensive positions, doing splash damage to entire groups of ships. After a few minutes of this three Igazras and a few more remaining Igadzra Aradas made a last ditch effort to break out of the Azdgari crossfire. Focusing on two Azdgari Warships the Igazras fired everything they had at the two isolated warships, destroying them in a wash of SAEs and Phase fire, but not before another Igazra fell to the viscous swarming Azdgari.

Making a short retreat, the Igadzra desperately tried to regroup before they were totally annihilated. The Azdgari, knowing that they had plenty of time and all the advantages, simply formed up in a 3 dimensional phalanx and gave their Azdaras a few seconds to recharge their shields.

Down on Marks planet, all information was being taken off or deleted from the computers. This didn't take a long time, and the Igadzra ships, having retreated to behind the planet, landed to pick up everyone. All shipyards were minorly wrecked, and most parts of the shipyards were taken aboard the Igazras. Mark being a outlaying system, almost no one lived there. Yet, the Igazras were very tightly packed when they lifted off. When in space, the ships put all power to speed, and then shot into hyperspace to Notil.
----------
At the same time, Notils defences were getting ready for the invasion. Half of the ships in Threefrog and half of the ships in Igadzra were on their way to Notil. The other half of Threefrogs ships went to Ersatd. The newly constructed 9 Igazras and 18 I. Aradas went half to Igadzra, and half to Notil. Half of the ships in Nujja and Norhis went to Mordus, and merged with the other fleet.

South Tip Conclave

Varian had been silent for some time, listening to Ashak's explanation without betraying his own thoughts. When Ashak finished speaking and turned his attention to Varian, waiting to hear some comment, the aged Kayan nodded to himself slightly.

"I will say that I believe you, Councillor Ashak," Varian said, "and that the Conclave is also inclined to do so. It is done. On the matter of the League, we have knowledge of them, although we have not contacted them since before we took this station. I believe that it is time for us to meet them in person, and we might as well might this a three-way meeting." Ashak blinked, surprised at how quickly Varian switched from probing defensive to acceptance. Kayans, it might be noted, could act quite oddly at times.

"If you have no complaints, Councillor, I will be accompanying you to the League homeworld so that between the three of us we can discuss the diplomatic situation. Then, perhaps, we could arrange for an exchange of willing citizens between our nations to further our friendship." He held out his hand to Ashak. "A Kayan custom. It seals a contract or agreement."

Perhaps they are true to their word, yet I still fear they are naďve. If this outpsot had not so recently come to us, we would have had cameras that would have picked up the encryption codes if we had chosen to do so. The Strandless Redemption League, however... who knows what the future holds for them.

Since the fall of the renegade threat, the Obutes Federal Directorate had been having more and more difficulty controlling its populace. Since the Conclave captured Histiri Station, four major insurrections had occured, areas on Obutes once controlled by the Directorate now defended by rebel forces. In addition, the garrisons in two major cities were beginning to feel the strain against constant riots and mobs that were rising, and in general, the Directorate's control was wavering. Resorting to ever more morally disgusting means of controlling the people, making examples of hundreds of people in a futile attempt of scaring the rest into control, the attention of the Conclave had been drawn. Military action seemed inevitable - if the Directorate was allowed to use planet threatening weapons, millions could die as a result.

It was thus that a military council was held on Outpost Sentinel even as Varian was meeting with the Miranu representative, to discuss the situation at hand.

"The Directorate's fleet is inoperational," Nhada explained. "We believe that they may have no more than half a dozen fighters available, what with the revolts on Obutes." He and Karatis had been called to the war council by Kataon, of the Conclave, being two of the highest ranking members in the Conclave's space fleet.

"So the most significant threat will be their ground defences," Karatis replied, looking to Kataon. "I doubt that our intention is to bombard their planet.

"It is not," answered Kataon. "The Conclave recognises that the planet must be liberated, but we'd prefer to use as little force as possible. We will need a fleet to move in and clear the system of any Directorate ships, and make sure that any merchants leave immediately."

Nhada laughed. "How disorganised we yet are, Kataon. I stand as interim leader of the Conclave fleet, but I only directly control a squadron of fighters. There's no reason for anyone to die securing the system, at least. I'd suggest gathering the captains of our Laziras and warships, promoting a leader among them, and have them secure the system."

"Nhada is right, I'm afraid. As steadfast as our pilots are, the defences on Obutes are formidable, and may very well be the death of numerous fighter pilots," Karatis pointed out.

Kataon nodded slightly. "I understand, of course. Our current level of organisation leaves something to be desired, rather." He paused, considering. "I may have an idea, however. Nhada, Karatis, I wish to appoint you both the rank of Guardian of the Conclave, along with two others. You will each be in personal command of a light interception fleet, comprised of fighters and Aradas."

"I see," Nhada said, running his fingers through his red-tinted hair. "And what of the command of our capital vessels, and the ultimate command?"

"I know of a Kayan who would be suitable for the capital vessel command, and from what I have heard, the general of the Strandless forces in Hrinix would also be suitable. As for overall command..." Kataon trailed off. "I have someone in mind. Arhanor Raezuul."

Nhada blinked, and Karatis looked shocked. The two of them exchanged looks, and Karatis was the first to speak. "The over-general of the Directorate's fleet?" he asked incredulously.

"Yes, for which reasons, I would appreciate it if he was not killed in the attack," Kataon responded coolly. "Believe me, there are reasons."

"Of course there are," Nhada put in quietly. "He's probably the best commander in this region. With a fleet as hopeless as Obutes', he saw the obliteration of Preliator Station, a renegade outpost they attempted to construct in DSN-5553, and it is said he led the vanguard of a Directorate fleet against Mavs ten years ago."

"And lost," Karatis murmured.

"He was outnumbered five to one. And he nearly won," Nhada replied. "Bloody hell, do you really think Arhanor will even work for the Conclave?"

"I believe so," said Kataon. "I believe he will. Now, to continue with our planning. I will appoint commanders of our capital vessels, and they will clear the system for us and bombard several Directorate military facilities on the planet. I intend to have them deploy twenty six thousand assault bots, as well as five thousand drop pod troops onto their capital. We've contacted the rebel forces on Obutes, and they'll carry out a simultaneous attack."

"Since you have your new warships and Laziras, what do you want us to do?" asked Karatis.

"Karatis, once the planetary defences are down, I'd like you to lead your squadron into the lower orbit and hit specific military command installations, as well as communication networks and the seat of their government. Nhada, as you're trained extensively at marine warfare, I want you to be in command of the drop pod troops. Operator Tzenayr will be monitoring the assault bots."

"I'll do it," Karatis replied. "It's time this be over."

"I suppose I have no choice," Nhada said, his voice slightly dull, "although it's been some time since I've seen any ground fighting." Of all the things they would have me do, they want me down on the planet, witnessing every unnecessary death that will occur because of this blasted liberation.

Insanity has its advantages

OOC: I have not had time to calculate all the ship positions, but there should be about 24 zidaras and 8 z fighters evenly spread. Add a couple more to Qerid as I put a task force there for protection against renegades. There is also a force in miranu space, and Myrx's task force is just now going to land on Zidagar. I'll also fix all previous errors.

IC: There was a sudden flash of orange on purple as several zidaras and fighters entered the system Zidagar. Myrx landed his ship in his spot on the landing bay. Nivad walked up to greet him.
"Hello Nivad," Myrx said as he walked out of his zidara, "Anything happen while I was gone?"
"Yes," Nivad started. He proceeded to tell him everything that he decided on, and the attack on Fluron. Myrx listened openly until the part about sending the task force to <classified>.
"You will," Myrx interrupted him, "call this attack off."
Nivad looked flustered. He was about to object, but the look in Myrx's eyes stopped him.
"Yes sir. They should only be at the end of our regional space. I'll send a transmission telling them their mission has been terminated and they are to return."
"How skilled are you..." two scientists entering the bay cut him off.
"Commander Myrx, Commander Nivad. We found some problems in the research of an enlarged fighter bay for the zidaras. We cannot fit five fighters in the ship, unless we get rid of everything including the cockpit. If we put in four, we would need to eliminate the dispersal rocket launchers and rockets. We are wondering whether or not you wish to proceed the research."
"Are you kidding? Nivad has come up with a great idea. Losing rockets while gaining fighters should improve attack/defense. Please continue the research," stated Myrx.
The scientists acknowledged and left. Nivad faced Myrx.
"You were saying?" Nivad questioned.
"Oh, right. I would like to challenge you to a practice duel in the training fighters," Myrx said, looking as if he hadn't done that in years. In fact he hadn't flown in a fighter in two years.
"Okay," Nivad said meekly. He had heard about Myrx's excellent flying skills, and that he has lived through many impossible circumstances without losing his ship. Myrx and Nivad walked through the corridors to the far side of the docking bay, when they entered a smaller area with about ten fighters. The fighters had two light phase cannons, which shot out a special light that didn't do any damage. The cockpit computer calculated the damage that would have happened. These are used to train new recruits, so they also have no phased beamers or hyperdrive fuel. Nivad entered the closest one, while Myrx entered the one beside it. With a jerk they lifted off and entered space.
"First just try to keep up with me, doing all the diving and spinning as I do," Myrx said into the comm. He then proceeded to dive and spin wildly, shooting out then spinning circles around other ships in the system. After thirty minutes Nivad could finally keep up with Myrx, only missing a few loops and spins.
"Okay, now try to hit me with the practice cannons. If you can hit me, then I will start the offensive," Myrx came in, his voice light and happy.
Nivad chased and shot madly in the direction of Myrx's fighter. Try as hard as he could, he couldn't hit Myrx. Myrx spun around, flying around with great competence. Nivad was trying his best just to hit him once, but couldn't. After an hour and a half he gave up.
"Okay, I give up," Nivad said, his voice very frustrated.
"Fine. Now you evade my shots," there was great delite in Myrx's voice.
Nivad tried all the tactics he knew to evade attacks, but kept on getting pelted by a storm of shots. The computer beeped every few minutes, showing that Nivad would have been blown up. This went on until Nivad gave up again. They landed in the docking bay, and got out. Myrx could tell Nivad was upset, so he didn't start conversation. Neither did Nivad. Myrx went off to his room, for when they landed it was night.

The Igadzra ships arrived in Himgrow and landed on the planet. Ignoring the looks from the Miranu's faces, the captain walked up to the weapons center, and right up to the counter.

"We need the designs for the Tractor and Repulsor beam weapons. Don't make this any harder than it already is." The Igadzrans behind the captain pulled out large phase rifles and shotguns. "If you give us these devices, we will probobly never bother you again. If you don't, well..." He guestured to the guns behind him.

Saga of the Guild: Chapter 16

Mira

"This meeting of the Miranu High Council is now in session," annouced Trademaster Corzun Dah. "We have much to discuss today. High Councilor Lelos Somm, Researcher of Station Pybin, will now explain to us the recent achievements of his constituents. Researcher?"

Lelos Somm stood and drew a data crystal from the sleeve of his flowing red roves. He cradled it in his worn hands for some time, then inserted it into the main translation circuit. His hands flew across the control console, bringing up several large holographic schematics. Two of them the council had already seen. With the three others they were completely unfamiliar.

"As you can see, the Ra Gunships and the Sokar Carrier fleets are beginning to enter full usage. We already have a sizeable group of these ships stationed in Dewe. Once the battle group there is fully assembled, however, we should begin strengthening our borders with complements of these ships. The High Council should look into the execution of this matter most carefully. Perhaps we should focus first on defending our northern and eastern borders; the north will hold back the renegades since they are bolstered by Zachit forces; the eastern systems of Himgro and Blaga hold much of our trading infrastructure. Before we address these matters, allow me to explain the signifiicance of these other holograms," said Somm as he deactivated the holograms. He then reactivated one and enlarged its dimensions. Turning to face the trademaster, Researcher Somm resumed his speech. "As you can see, this is a normal pursuit missile chassis, completely indistingquishable from all others like it. This one, however, holds in its casing the modified Zidagar warhead. We have toned down its power so as to sacrifice no speed nor accuracy on the part of the missile itself, but the warhead and its guidance systems weigh one metric ton. The Lightninghammer missile will thus weigh twice as much as a standard pursuit missile. Since it makes use of the standard pursuit missile architecture, the Lightninghammer can be fired from our standard launching mechanisms, particularly on our future carriers."

"When this missile is ready, will all future carriers built from that time forth be equipped with Lightninghammers intead of pursuit missiles?" interrupted High Councilor Marig.

Lelos nodded gravely. We will be able to do just that. Priat's Engineers should be able to refit all ships made before then over the course of a galactic standard week. The cost to modernize our starships will be substantial, but I believe these recent developments warrant the expenditures. Now," he continued, "let us have a look at the NPD."

The holoprojector shifted to display a large device with obvious roots in a Miranu sensor array despite numerous new rectennas, receiving panels, and sensor dishes across it. It was whit with two blue and violet stripes and appeared quite compact for the amount of material it included.

High Councilor Imir of Blaga motioned to be recognized. Trademaster Dah waved his hand in acknowledgement and gestured for her to speak. She rose, displaying the blue-violet robes of the Miranu Trade Conglomerate with her house crest emblazoned on the front. Imir was of House Nazdor, and by Blaga name laws she wore the official name of High Councilor Imir al Nazdor kel Blaga. The swirling golden galaxy that was the symbol of the powerful Nazdor banking family spiraled across her robes nd up her arms. She gazed around the meeting hall, eyeing each high councilor until absolute silence reigned. Finally, she spoke.

"The Miranu Trade Conglomerate is under tremendous pressure by the people of Blaga to show results in our long term investments. Naturally, they have foisted that pressure on to my shoulders. As the MTC provided massive capital to the Nebula Penetration Devioce project, they want to see results. Tangible results. So, I ask the High Council," she continued, "when can we expect returns?"

"In approximately one galactic standard week," announced Somm. The reply was prompt; Imir detected no hesitation whatsoever in the Researcher's reply. I shouldn't attempt to read him, thought Imir uneasily. He's had much more experience than I at this. She observed Somm relax again. I should confront him later about this, she decided.

The Researcher took control again. "We have fit the device to a Ra gunship. That ships will not be engaging the renegades in battle. It has already been stationed in Dewe in preparation for Action: Dust Sweep. Does that satisfy the MTC's question?" Imir nodded. Somm continued by bringing up a final schematic.

The new design was immediately recognized as the familiar hull of an arada. None present failed to notice the distinct violet color of the starship. After the hologram began orbiting the room and demonstrating its capabilitied. All the high councilors were intrigued. Marig tired of the inquisitive silence first.

"Alright Lelos, you've piqued our collective curiosity. What is the purpose of this new arada?"

"This is the design of the Zidagar missile arada. This is merely a simulation of its capabilities, so it will still be some time until the Engineers are ready to hand it over to the Zidagar with absolute confidence that there is nothing with with it. As you can see, we did a fair job of fulfilling our part of the bargain with the Zidagar. We have yet to see if they will deliver on the last part of the deal. We can only hope they send us aid in assaulting The Door."

"And if the Zidagar renege on their side?" demanded a high councilor. "Do we still turn over the plans for this powerful new ship, even if part of the contract is void?"

There was little hesitation in Somm's voice this time, and Imir wondered if anyone else besides the trademaster had noticed. Still, the fact remained that it was there. "We will still stay to the course we plotted when we drew up this treaty. We will stay true to our word to honor our people," Somm stated flatly, his eyes blazing a fiery green which suddenly cooled to a tidal blue as his mind regained control. "We will have the plans transmitted on schedule."

"Very good, Researcher," applauded Trademaster Corzun Dah. "Now, let us address the issue of the North Tip threat."

The meeting continued for several more hours. The Supreme Admiral was invited to speak with Trademaster Dah, but he apologized and said he could not arrive in until the end of the session of the Miranu High Council. Now he arrived in the office of the trademaster, to be greeted not just by Corzun Dah, but also by Lelos Somm and Imir al Nazdor as well.

"Welcome Supreme Admiral Sunrunner," began Trademaster Dah, only to be cut off by the admiral.

"No time for pleasantries sir. We have a war to plan," stated Shek Sunrunner factually. He turned to face Researcher Somm. "I am most appreciative that you have provided me with the rudiments of a fleet with which to live up to my rank. The Ra gunships provide excellent support to the carriers in simulation." He then turned to Imir and Corzun Dah. "You have my thanks as well for fronting the research grants and approving the legislation that made this all possible. I swear to you today that the Star League's fleet wil become a navy to be proud of."

Station Pybin

There is a room at the edge of Station Pybin's reactor core which houses the work of the Researcher himself. Only his most trusted Scientists, his most loyal Engineers, his most adept Pilot have access to it. Only three Miranu were present in the room known as the Abyss: Scientist Loeugith, Engineer Aenig, and Pilot Regaul. Loeugith wore the red of the Scientist, Aenig sported Engineer blue, and Regaul was arrayed in his green Pilot uniform. Currently, the three were in a heated debate over how to proceed in their Researcher's plan.

"I have said it five hundred times and I will say it a five hundred and first," roared Regaul. "We have his plans right here. There is no reason not to proceed. The stealth field will become the best defence the Star League has. Let us design and implement it immediately!"

Engineer Aenig glared at him. "You of the Pilot caste would do well to learn the doctrine of patience," he grated. "Our resources in this matter are large, I'll admit, but stealth technology is a relatively new field to be pioneered. It will be difficult to create a truly worthy deisgn, Regaul. But make no mistake; our stealth field will be an advance to take pride in."

"This quibbling wastes time," growled Loeugith. "We must honor Lelos Somm and complete as much of his project as possible before he returns. He is depending on our efforts to meet his efficiency requirements. Researcher Somm confided that he has something special planned for the immediate future."

The Pilot sighed. Aenig exhaled in relief. Regaul looked up from his thoughts, saying, "Let's get on with it then."

The three of them threw their full efforts into conducting the planned experiments. Regaul was sent constantly to acquire starship materials to put to Somm's tests; Aenig, head of the Engineer caste, ran errands for his Scientist friend locating metals and parts of every variety. When all the materials were assembled in the Abyss, Loeugith announced readiness. Three Miranu transformed into three whirlwinds of activity, becoming spinning Coriolis storms of efficiency. The Loeugith-storm would call "Molecular knife!" and a gloved hand holding the tool would emerge from the Regaul-cyclone. Aenig would merge with Loeugith, Regaul with Aenig, and soon the three established a rhythm so complete that Loeugith could merely gesture at the others and they would know which tool he needed. Soon all three switched to working in the Miranu hand language code, all three totally immersed in the deepest of Miranu active thought trances. Nothing could disturb them now; they were immune to outside disturbances as long as the trance would last.

With luck, the trance would continue long enough to provide impressive results by the Researcher's return.

Himgro

The Miranu governor of Himgor stood before the Igadzra and his platoon. He was fiercely tapping his left temple. Finally, he looked up at the Igadzra commander and spoke.

"Very well. I will have to get clearance from my government on Mira. It will take some time before they can reach an agreement in a meeting of the High Council. Please wait here while I make the call."

The Igadzran commander slammed his rifle onto the pavement. "Make it quick," he hissed.

The governer looked back in his direction and gave a short nod. He marched off to his residence which also functioned as a research lab for the Engineers of Priat on loan from Station Pybin as part of a complex trade agreement between Himgro and Priat. As he entered, the doors closing silently behind him, he waved over his two most trusted techs and ordered them to follow him. They descended to the communication room and sent the following message to Mira.

(—Transmission...encoding...(—Encryption Level Theta—)
To: Miranu High Councilor
From: Dorok Von, Himgro Governor
Subject: Igadzra coercion

The Igadzra have assaulted our world and are demanding the turnover of a tractor beam and a repulsor beam on the threat they will murder Miranu citizens if we fail to comply with this demand. Please send instructions back as soon as possible.

Anxiously,
Dorok Von

Mira

Researcher Somm stormed into the High Council meeting hall. He immediately slammed his fist onto the conference table and motioned to be recognized. Trademaster Dah called on him.

"Leave this matter of the Igadzra to me. I designed the tractor beam and I know the repulsor beams from experience with the gunships better than anyone in the galaxy. I ask this council to allow me to send the message detailing to Governor Dork Von exactly what to do. They must be handled with extreme care in every situation in which they must be moved." He continued standing to show that he was expecting full cooperation and that he was ready to run off to send the message immediately.

Fourteen green lights flickered to life.

Somm left the room at a dead run. He keyed up his docuscribe and with amazing speed composed a plan with precise instructions as to what exactly Governor Von and his techs should do.

============

Himgro

After several hours of waiting for design specifications to come back from Mira, Governor Dorok Von received the plans. He and his techs immediately got to work, and Miranu techs scrambled into the Himgro research labs and snatched the two beams from the design shelves. After several hours of verifying the weapons were prepared properly, the Miranu emerged and handed one repulsor beam and one tractor beam to the impatient Igadzra platoon.

Outpost Sentinel, STC Space

Neve Ashak nodded his assent. He had much to learn from the intriguing Varian, and quickly followed him to the docks where his courier was berthed.

(EDIT): Fixed Sokar production.

Star League Construction Guild Report:

Constructed/Built/Completed: 20 Ra-class Gunships, 8 Sokar-class Carriers, 10 M. Freighters, 5 M. H. Freighters

(All these warships will be stationed in Dewe. The Dewe System now looks like this. The freighters and heavy freighters go to Himgro):

Munb (Dewe System)
60 Ra Gunships
45 Sokar Carriers
30 Miranu Heavy Freighters
47 Miranu Freighters

Himgro (Himgro System)
30 Miranu Heavy Freighters
47 Miranu Freighters

Station Pybin Research Directorate:

Research: Miranu Cloaking Device: The MCD works on the principle of a one-way cloak. Namely, the Miranu cannot be seen nor detected by enemy vessels and sensors, but the Miranu still have the ability to use sensors to see outside the cloak. Extensive research will allow weapons to be fired from the ship while it is under cloak. The downside is that the cloak drains fuel, and once all of a vessel's fuel is consumed, the cloak suddenly deactivates. (Begun: 12/6/02) (End: 12/13/02)

Project: Zidagar Missile Arada design:
Standard Arada Chassis
Weaponry:
2 Pursuit Missile Launchers: 15 Pursuit Missiles
3 Phase Cannons
(Begun: 12/6/02) (End: 12/9/02)

Project: Lightninghammer Missile: Utilizing the recently acquired plans from the Zidagar, the missile will be based on the following design. A pursuit missile chassis will be equipped with the Miranu-modified warhead, keeping the same speed and accuracy as the original missile at the cost of increased mass. It can still be fired from the standard pursuit missile launcher. It will weigh 2 tons and causes both moderate shield and armor damage. (Begun: 12/6/02) (End: 12/9/02)
