Updating Coldstone

Hi everyone,

My name is Carm, I'm a 4th year Computer Science major at RIT. I'm an intern for Ambrosia until the summer. My big job is going to be updating Coldstone (and in turn, PoG), so I'm gonna need bug reports so that I have some specific things to work on. In the meantime I'll be surfing the webboards, beta list archives, and checking out the source code so I can catch up.

by the way, if anyone here as RealBasic experience or is interested in being in the beta list for Coldstone or PoG to help me out, let me know and I'll add you.

Thanks!

Glenn Mathews has a (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/glennfield/ColdstoneBugs.html")Unresolved problems in Coldstone(/url) web page devoted to some of the bugs in the engine. That would be as good of a place to start as any.

Thanks for any help that you can give this beast Carm. The community appreciates it greatly.

Welcome. Glad to see some action from Ambrosia. 🙂 You probably know the big ones, but here's a list in case you don't:

1. CS games don't work in OS 10.3
2. CS games will not save properly in OS 10.2. New files can not be created, you must overwrite an existing file to save.
3. Many features (such as Build map preview picture) don't work in OS 10 or work sporadically
4. In OS 9, memory is not always released after being used (i.e. you place an item (using memory). Then you place another one, using the same amount of memory again. And then again, and probably, ColdStone has crashed from lack of memory at this point).

Those are the big ones. I feel like I'm missing one... Mmmm... Well, if I think of it I'll post it.

Finally, good luck on fixing it. If you can, can you keep us posted on how it's going fixing ColdStone?

And I don't know any problems because I only have the demo version.

2. The PC compiled version doesn't seem to have it' music work
3. In Jaguar (Mac OS 10.2) the saving for a game doesn't work proporly(You click the save and when you try to load that save it isn't there)
4. and The Generate map pictures feature doesn't work in Mac OS X.

I am interested in beta testing, as well, and also have a very limited REALbasic knowledge. Here's some more bugs for you:
-Sometimes when placing 2 items of the same type on a map, the application freezes, forcing a force quit. I have only been using 10.2.x so I don't know if this happens in OS9.
-Placing stamps in the endgame event crashes the game.
-In the item editor on the links tab, the "condition" button crashes the program (apparently it doesn't if that's the first thing you do after starting the application).
-Is it possible to get the undo function to work in the map editor?

Thanks again! It's great to hear that our plights are beginning to get answered.

It sounds like many prayers are being answered now. I know this will be a large project and won't happen overnight. I have one nagging thought. What will happen to existing plugins for PoG? Will they still work with the up-dated versions or will they need to be re-done as well? Perhaps there is no answer to this before we know what actually requires changes.

I'm sure you will find many members anxious to give whatever help you can use.

Nice to see you, Carm. Wishing you all the best in your stay here. Bug reports? The archives of the beta list, as well as Glenn's list are the best places to start. As to the beta... well, I'm already on the list, unless you're resetting it. So, I suppose I'm still on it.

It'll be nice to get CS updated at last. Hope it doesn't take too long. 🙂

You cannot believe how happy I am. Yay. If you need to talk to anyone who uses Coldstone there are 3 main places we hang out.

1. Here
2. The CRC - (url="http://"http://www.coldstonerc.cjb.net")www.coldstonerc.cjb.net(/url) (be warned this should be changing in the new year)
3. The Coldstone Chat chat room which you can get to via iChat or AIM or any other AOL client.

Oh yeah. I'd love to be on the beta list.

One more thing. You say you will only be here until summer. You know that if you manage to pull all these bug fixes off in the time you have there will be a lot of people that will worship you and want you to stay at Ambrosia.

Oh. It really does feel like Christmas Now. Yay

EDIT: I know that bug fixes come first but if you pull them off is there any chance of you adding some basic new features (if you have time) . I think the one that a lot of people want is basic text support for dialogs (Fonts, Sizes, Bold etc)

Oh yeah. I'm not sure how hard this will be, but there are some hidden features in the tools menu. If you start up CS but go to the tools menu before you get rid of the tip of the day there are some missing features. If there are any remnants of these in the code and you could possibly implement them then that would be brilliant.

But as I have said before. BUG FIXES.

I'd really like to Beta Test CGE again, I've sent you an email about that.

... ** Big O..ACTION!**

Carm, do you have an idea on when you could get the Panther bug fixed? Just a rough estimate like summer of 2004? I would like to know if I need to delay the estimated release date for my game.

I'd love to beta test the thing, except that I don't have time.

Whatever happens, focus on getting the major bugs fixed. Everything else comes second. Don't get bogged down in feature requests. I'd hate to see an update go down the drain because of the hordes of people wanting features.

</paranoia>

Good luck!

Does this mean that Beenox is officially relinquishing it's hold on Coldstone and PoG?

I feel like I'm missing one... Mmmm... Well, if I think of it I'll post it.

How about that background music will not play on Windows 98 and ME?

Anyways, there are an absurd amount of bugs in PoG as well (most of which are spelling/grammar errors!). Many of them are listed at (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum61/HTML/001379.html")this link(/url).

Carm, we all owe you our gratitude and thanks. You are saving a great program (and PoG, a great game). We will be behind you till the end. And thank you once again!

Wow, 15 replies. Sorry I haven't gotten back to everyone, it's been a busy holiday. I'll be back in full force on Monday while I'm at work. I just added a few more people who've responded/emailed me to the beta lists...if you asked to be on the list but still haven't gotten a subscription notification, email me at carm@ambrosiasw.com (I may have overlooked your message). If you email me to be added, please use the email address that you want added to the beta list. If you respond through this webboard about being added, I'll add your webboard email address to the list, unless you tell me otherwise.

If I understand it correctly, I'll be paid by Beenox to work on Coldstone.

GrahamVH, about an estimated date on fixing the Panther bug, I honestly have no idea right now...but I'll be sure to let everyone know once I figure it out.

Like I said, I'll be back on Monday to get cracking on all this...I hope everyone had a great holiday and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Well, we have been waiting for this for ages so you can imagine our reactions when we first saw it. Most of us went through these stages:

1. Shock
2. Disbelief
3. Questioning if this is real
4. Realising it is real
5. Being excited

Well go luck and hopefully I'll talk to you on Monday if you decide to come into 'Coldstone Chat'

Mmmm... Beta testing CS would be interesting. Could you add me to the list please?

By the way, I remembered the bug I thought of:

If you have an interface that goes around the entire screen and a map that does not fill the entire "playable map area", the game blurs it (sorry for lack of a better description, I need to get to school to take a look at the problem more closely so I can get a screenshot, etc.).

Um... what is Beta Testing? Is it just testing it? If it is I'd be glad to help test ColdStone. But if it's something else could you please tell me?
