PC plug-ins

Can I make plugins on my pc?

Hello, I was wondering about making plugins on a PC.
I'm just starting to learn about it but have some questions that I cant find any answers for:
1. Do you just make a text document for your plugin file?
2. If so how do I make it a REZ file? Is there a compiler of some sort?
3. If so, is there a way to decompile REZ files so I can get a look at how they're done? This will just help me learn how to make plugins easier but its not 100% needed.

If anybody can answer these questions I will be very thankful.

I hope someone can answer these questions and I hope im not posting on the wrong board. Thank You!

EVNEW is a good editor for PC from what I understand. I am a mac person for the most part, but I believe the only way to make a .rez file is to use something that creates them directly, not the .txt file way you are talking about. I could be wrong though. Either way, EVNEW is a program that lets you creat and edit plugins.

EVNew is the only

I take it that the text file necessary is only a read me though, right?

EVNEW is the only editor for the PC - which means it's a good thing that it's a good one. 🙂 You can find it here. Regarding text files, you can export plugin files to text files, but it doesn't work the other way around.

Regarding looking through the Nova data files to see how they do things, that's a good idea. However, I'd advise you always work with copies of the data files - that way, if you accidentally mess something up, you don't need to re-download the entire game just to fix that one file.

Indeed.

Thanks you very much everyone!
The program works and I understand how to use it so Thank You Belthazar!

Hmm... I'm late. Oh well. If you have any questions, go on over to the Dev Corner, just two subforums above this one. 🙂 By reading some topics, you can either boggle your mind or understand a lot.

The lads and lassies over in the Developer's Corner would be better at answering this question -- I'll move this topic there. 🙂

I wish you good luck. I still would prefer, personally, to stick with ResEdit.

Which you can't get on a PC so its kind of a moot point...

EVNEW is definately a good editor.

Horray for me finding a bug (on of the very few)!

Anyway. Yeah, its open source, too. So anyone else here with C++, you know, you can help. As if i were on the project... anyway...

Hey, I've got a bug for ya...

I try to import new ship graphics into EVNEW, but it won't let me...what's up with that?

Do they need to be in some special format? It lets me see gif and jpg files, and I made a spin graphics thingy in Photoshop for the ship I want to import, and I swear that it was absolutely perfect, but...yeah...

I really REALLY want to import these graphics, but it won't let me. Help?

<EDIT>
Oh, and it lets me import sounds, but then they don't work, and are overridden by the default sounds.

And something else, EVNEW hasn't been updated for over a year. No bug fixes, nothing. Anybody know where the author went off to? Is there a new site or something that I should know about? There are definitely a few things that should be fixed.

Make sure you have 1.0.4. Which is availible from the the add-ons page.

And you can use Mac editors on PC or Linux through the magic of PearPC> 😛

I don't think many people enjoy getting a computer emulator to work. Not to mention how to obtain a Mac OS (they aren't free, y'know)...

AS for how to import pics, read the EVNEW docs. Then tell us what you did try, with which, files, etc..., so that specialists can better answer you.

Yeah 10.1.5 is $5. :p. And PearPC isn't that hard to get working. all you have to do is tell it where the HD images and the CD Image is then make a batch file and run it.
