Yes, it's slow; you'll find no argument there. Then again, let's consider its pluses. When upgraded, it manages to be perhaps average in speed/manueverability. Basically, at that point, it's on par with an Argosy. You'll have little trouble outrunning torpedos, should the unlikely need arise, and if you're running from missiles, then use the afterburner. It is extremely well armored/shielded, sports four turrets, and has an enormous, perhaps even comical amount of weapon space. As for the Lightning Vs. Patrol Ship debate, I was actually talking about bay-fulls of fighters. Four Patrol Ships will destroy two lightnings and then limp back to your Patrol Ship bay to fight another day.
Does anyone else think, that from a monetary view, fighters are a waste of money? Couldn't you do the same amount of damage without puting yourself in danger by just firing about ten torpedos in the opposite direction to your target before actually engaging them in ship-to-ship?
And, hey, aren't the bulk cruiser or luxury liner slower than the Confederate Cruiser?

Heh, no you can't get the Alien Cruiser at all. Not without tinkering with plug-ins or editing the saved game file. Also, it's has no armour, only shields, so it's impossible to disable it.

1. It does not have any turrets, only 4 Neutron Blasters which are so shortranged that they are useless you unless you charge it from the front.
2. One Patrol Ship has 2 Missiles; one Lightning has 4. So four Patrol Ships have no more Missiles than two Lightnings. Plus, the Lightning has much more armament. It has Heavy Rockets and Javelins which Patrol Ship doesnt have.
3. It does have good weapon space, but its not uniquely good. Kestrel and Rebel Cruiser have 20 tons more.
4. Bulk Freighter and Luxury Liner are even slower than the Cruiser because they can carry a enormous amount of cargo, a limitation of heavy freighters in all versions.
5. It does not have any missiles either; only torpedos.
It IS exceptionally shielded, well armed (14 Torps), has third best expansion in the game, and best armor in the game. But its slowness without upgrades and the shortrangedness of the blasters make it useless for me.

It actually has four proton turrets
Each patrol ship has four proton cannons and two missiles and 20 units of sheilds Each lightning has 4 laser cannons, 4 missiles, 25 units of sheilds, 5 units of armour, a javelin pod and a couple of rockets
P ships = 16 proton cannons, 8 missiles and 80 units of sheilds L ships = 8 laser cannons, 8 missiles, 2 javelin pods, 4 rockets, 50 units of sheilds and 10 units of armour. In my opinion the 16 proton cannons ownz j00 over the 8 lasers :p, and the extra sheilds would probably make the patrol ships come out on top
Strange, last time I checked the Confed cruiser has tons more weapons space. Considering you thought it didn't have four proton turrets, that would mean it has 100 tons more space than those pitiful ships you mentioned.
Who needs speed when you can rip apart anything that comes near you?
So? Torpedoes are far more effective against capital ships than missiles, and the patrol ships take care ofthe smaller fry
You can sell the blasters and cram 140 extra missiles in, if they're your thang, and has the best expansion in the game, not third best.
That being said, the Rebel Destroyer>Confed Cruiser+j00 because of it's amazing speed.

I like all the rebel ships.
The Mantas on the Rebel Cruisers can be used as external missile racks. Send them out, shoot a salvo, and reclaim them.
The destroyer is fast, deadly, and looks beautiful. I blew up 3 'Fed Cruisers and 2 'Fed Frigates using 4 laser cannons, 1 proton cannon, 4 laser turrets, and no Monty Python.
The Manta is pretty agile. Keep behind the enemy fighters while the swivel lasers chew away at the shields.
I could've sworn that Patrol Ships and mantas each had three missiles. I mean, that's how many they fire...

All Ai ships have 50% more ammo than they're outfitted with. e.g: if the ship has two missiles, the Ai has 3.
And mantas only fire two, because 50% of 1 is 1.5, and since you can't shoot half a missile :p, they round up.
Rapier is the best ship. i just stick proton cannons and missiles, then watch a bunch of fed ships bite the dust!

Uh, Missiles arent that good against government ships. You need Torpedoes.
I'd say the Scoutship. I mean, it has enough space for a Hawk fighter bay, and the cargo is just about perfect. Add some Sheild boosters, armor, and speed, and you got one tuff ship!

I outfitted my rapier with all lasers, to go with the rear turret. I know I got one laser turret, but I don't remember how many guns. Good ship, though. Best fighter to fly.
The defender is sweet but it really dependes on the person. The clipper is great too.

that is soo true. I love the Rebel Cruiser for its beauty, and its usefulness. it's plenty strong, has fast shield regeneration, and is perfect...PERFECT when upgraded a bit with shield upgrades, and turning/accel/speed upgrades (none of which are at all NECESSARY)...it's fighter launching speed is AWESOME (almost instantaneous) and, I'll say again, it is a VERY beautiful ship. Just one question...WHY LASERS? just because the profile says so in the Outfit Ship place, doesn't mean they actually accel at doing what they say they do. I've found that protons, though they weigh more, have a faster rate of fire, and do much more damage. though, I must say, a combination of the two is PRICELESS. 2 laser turrets, and 2 proton turrets work beautifully together. the lasers do their thing, while the protons do their thing...VERY nice stuff. peace out

Dosen't the exec. transport look cool? So is the UE Fighter. To bad all their armaments suck. Oh well, just tinker with some plugins (by the way, what should I change in ResEdit to make the UE Fighter take ten guns and 10 turrets).
Look at the ship resc. and open the UE fighter. Look for max guns and turrets then make it 10. To have start with change the weapons.

Cough UE Fighter is for a different game. EVO. Youre probally meaning the Lightning.
