Why do you still play EV Classic

Considering how EV "Classic" has been around for such a long time now and there alread has been two sequels, I'd like to know your reason(s) for playing it. There are quite a few profiles on this board even nowdays and I'm not surprised if we all end up saying the same thing... but let's give it try shall we?

Bring it on!

Here's something funny: System 7.5.2

It has much more gorgeous ships than EVO or (sorry, man, better graphics doesn't mean better looking) EVN. Lightning, Rapier, Corvette, Kestrel, Rebel Destroyer, Rebel Cruiser... even the Confederate frigate and cruiser for all of you who like "cuddly" ships.

Am I posting in Just Chat or B&B;? If so, I'm probably joking.

I haven't played in almost a year, I admit. But, ah, the mem'ries...

Because EVO is too boring and my laptop doesn't have enough memory to download EVN.

There are a surprising number of people here, I've discovered, who don't touch the classic EV any more (Our fearless leader being one of them).

I still play rather often, but only to test New Republic. If I weren't developing a plugin, I probably wouldn't touch it.

Occasionally, I'll crack it open with ResEdit to answer questions people ask on the web-board.

And that's pretty much it.

Plug-ins. There are still some I haven't played.

Yeah, definatly plug-ins. EV Classic still has the best plugins by far.

I open up EV from time to time to blast things...but I haven't really played it for +6 months.

EV Classic is a classic, and the best out of the 3 i think. I only play it with plugs now, because i have beat it.

there are still tons of plugs i haven't found...

Yeah, I don't play EV anymore. Actually, I don't play any of the EVs anymore; simply a matter of not enough time.

EV is the best. It is simple and straighforward. I still have several Classic EV Plug-ins I want to try....

EVO's info made the game seem so "cooperative / United Nations-like" I had not interest in it.

I am about to fix my memory problem enough to try EVN, but I am somewhat ambivalent about it.... It seems quite complicated compared to EV.

Meh, I haven't touched any of the EV's for quite a while. I guess I'm too hooked on other things at the moment, but I'll eventually come crawling back for some more 😉

Plugs, plus I'm new to it. I don't want to play EV:O till I have the money to register, and I can't play on EVN for I don't have a Mac.

I haven't played EV or EVO in quite a while, and got pretty bored with EVN... kind of waiting for the ability to play the first to on Nova, but that could be a while, and otherwise I'll be playing them under emulation. I did think the other day that I need to start another game of EV classic; it has been quite a while. Personally I've had more fun in Override, and like those ship graphics best.. and know the mission strings far better :), but the simplicity and (I think) well done build up of Classic is what will bring one back to it.

After playing EVO and EVN a reasonable amount, I think that Classic has the happy medium between the two styles:

Nova has a 'you're only playing this to get the one string done' style, and it irks me terribly when someone says to keep a look out for more missions.. then it gets boring! I find there just isn't nearly as much fun to be had in the Nova galaxy - probably a combination of most of it being uninhabited and a lot of it having awful hyperspace design laden with dead ends, i.e. Fed / Auroran space - and the fact that you don't really bring about any changes in the galaxy (a la EVO) even though the missions tell you that you pretty much changed everything there ever was.. and they are always amazed by your combat skills even though (speaking for myself) half the time the enemy were all dead before you even got to them!

Override's style of having multiple strings available for the one pilot, and at least 3 quite distinct areas in the galaxy, is quite nice.. but it is also a bit harder to believe - especially the fact that the UE haven't explored much past their borders. Missions are fairly continuous and if there is a break in one, there is no shortage of others to do. The fact that big battles are restricted to outpost type systems - interrace borders - also declines from the fun to be had a bit.. too much effort into setting up 'real' cultures, i.e. this planet gives the UE hyperspace fuel.. this one gives the Zidagar aligned crystals, etc.

The style of Classic is very different from both of those. The story is very believable for a start, and the fact that you get to follow it through quite far is good. The ship range is modest compared to the other games, but there aren't any obvious omissions. Outfits, including secondaries, are simple to work out and use, compared to EVN where I've only tried to once, bewildered by the selection! Classic string missions have gaps in them - I think they worry more about combat / legal status than the other games - but there is plenty to do to fill in those gaps... the galaxy is well-designed, allowing for many places for fighting, while keeping hyperspace routes sensible - if you want to go somewhere, head in that general direction!

I could go on, but I'd say I've covered most of why I still would play EVC.. and probably will in the next few weeks :).

I guess if i had the time id still play.
EVC was my favorite, the never ending battles was the great part but ya the plugs help it too.

For starters, ill admit the sequels are good, well i cant comment on NOVA, my mac finaly died after i hit it with a baseball bat and i have to wait for the PC port but never the less. new features, bigger galaxies are not all that makes a game great. EV was the first in a line of games and except for a few rare occurences i persoanly think the first game in a chain is always the best. EV brought a fresh new look with its enviroment and i loved being able to fly around in my great looking rapier and destroying whole fleets of ships because i had it so beefed up (not cheating either.) though fairly simple compared to NOVA, EV took the classic civil war, put a spin on it, added a whole slew of mission strings, beutifly rendered ships, and a great story line and sent it to the public.

EVO took the EV engine, vastly improved on it with many new features, and a whole new story line, ships and weapons. but in the creation of a larger galaxy and more ship types and races made for little loopholes that when exploited could ruin the game for you in the long run. an exaple of this is the UE carrier and igadzra warship crew sizes. a UE carrier flown by a competent person can easily take out a lone Igadzra, and when borded and captured you could sell an igadzra for like 300% profit.

now granted i have not played nova yet, and i am sure it is a great game, but no other game in the EV line will ever be able to compare to the classicness of EV and the story lines and simply the easy gameplay and learning curve that EV has while still making it difficult in the long run.

well im not sure if my thought make sense but i can only hope i conveyed them properly.

What you mean by "selling"? You cant sell ships in EVO, only in Nova. You can only loot the Igazra for big bucks- 600.000 credits.

I am eager to try to ansver mission questions

He simply means trading it in for a cheaper ship (probably the previously mentioned UE Carrier)... think flexible.
