Escorts for Idiots

I don't quite understand escorts, well, I understand the commands, but my escort just sits there! Isn't he supposed to help in combat?

An Argosy and a Clipper. So is there a site I can find that tells me which ships are warships and which are fighters?

Those are defined by flags in the EV resource files, I think, but the distinction is fairly obvious:

Fighters: Hawk, Lightning, Confed Patrol Ship, Confed Gunship, Manta
Warships: Corvette, Kestrel, Confed Frigate, Confed Cruiser, Rebel Destroyer, Rebel Cruiser

The only one that I'm not 100% sure about is the Corvette, but I'm fairly positive that it's a warship.

All the other ships are freighters, and give you extra space for trading, plundering, etc. - mission imporant cargo never goes into your escorts.

To make it simple, if you gain cargo space when you hire/capture the ship, it probably won't fight for you. In your case, I think both of those ships add cargo space and therefore will not fight for you.

I think the Rapier is also considered a fighter (not that this really matters.)

Freighters with turrets (light freighter, argosy) will keep formation, but they will fire their turrets on incoming fighters or warships.

I thought that brave traders (like Argosies) do fight for you, and that wimpy traders (like Light Freighters) just stay in formation and fire turrets at enemies...

Alright, I now have two lightnings and two hawks. (Dam***, I had a question, what was it.....OHE YEAH!) And I wanna' know, how do you equip other stuff to them. (Heehee, Maybe I could equip my hawk with a Fighter Bay.....) Um.....I had another question.....Ugh, Oh Well.

Unfortunatly, in Escape Velocity, you can't equip your fighters or escorts with anything but their stock configuration. On the plus side, any time you land on a planet or recall your fighters into the hangar, they recieve complete repairs, rearmament, and recharging of their shields which can provide incredibly useful in an extended battles. If you're truly unsatisfied with your fighters, the only thing you can do is pop open the EV data file with ResEdit and tinker with their settings.

O.K. If you're escorts or your little dudes inside your ship kill a guy, do you get the kill, and does it affect your legal status?
Another question. Is it possible to outfit your escorts and guys with stuff in EVO or EVNova?

Let's see, I'm pretty sure you get the kill. Who else would? And, no, you can't do anything to your escorts without cheating. (I.e. ripping apart the data files and changing what weapons your escorts have.)

Oh yeah, try to minimize your "..." usage, "ummm"s, and sentences or words in caps. It gets a little annoying, and, if used excessively, could result in a lost karma point. (I lost one once for making fun of SliverDragon... :))

Is it possible to buy more than one fighterlightning bay, and than get more than 2 lightningshawks? And, when you disable and board a lightning, is it somehow possible to use it as a secondary weapon, ang go OVER the limit of two like you can with other secodary weapons? Thanks!

No, you can only buy the Hawk bay, and can buy only one. However, if you have no Lightnings but do have a bay, you can capture Lightnings to use them as fighters. If you already have two, you should:

A. Disable a Kestrel and take its Lightnings. This allows you to have >2, but they launch their Lightnings almost immediately, so it's hard to do unless you bribe the kestrel before it launches them, and then disable it.

B. IF you have the tractor beam, disable a kestrel and its Lightnings, then drag the Lightnings into the Kestrel. When you board: voila- Lightnings.
