So? The HC is huge efficient industrial power. Pirates get their resources and ship/designs from raiding and old factories.

How do you know that the Pirates don't have original thinkers? How do you know that we don't have very rich systems full of resources? And why is it that we could take your systems so easily if you are such a huge power?

Because if this were real, the HC would have dozens of BattleGroups, guarding the border. Not to mention outposts.
spl, in original form, you have to admit, the Buster Cannon is a huge overbalance. The only alternatives I can think of are making it very short range (remove disable ship clause, but it would also have to slow the ship down or something), or making any ship with it cost more like 100 million credits more, possibly more than that. Rak's original restrictions still left it a superweapon with no realistic drawbacks. Superweapons have to be either really expensive or have some other kind of restrictions - well beyond the originals.

Hmmm...you pirates should just concentrate on medium-level weapons like better turrets and missiles and stuff,and build up your strength that way,with realistic,mass produceable ships you can afford. BTW:Spl_Cadet,do you want to see my Cruiser design?

Possibly, the cannon could be medium range (missle range) weapon, but inflict the same amount of damage to the firing ship as the target if within a short distance (laser range).

Right, I like the short range idea, and I do agree that the Carrier is more powerful then anything the pirates have, but I don't think the solution to that is to invent a weapon that can obliterate it instantaneously, with the only cost being that of the pirate ship that killed it. What else can be done to even the playing field a bit? I don't really like the idea of multiple super weapons, that would just be mass carnage where battles would be determined by whoever fired first or something, although the idea of a weapon that can easily disable another superweapon sounds good.
Oh, and I think this is the longest topic I've ever seen, though that may start to become a bad thing if it isn't already.

Fundamentally, I don't have a problem with that, as long as the pirate ship costs about as much as the Carrier. But I don't think the pirates want all their ships with a Buster Cannon to cost 150+ million credits, so I imagine we'll be doing the short range, slow ship option.

On the matter of the buster cannon, Mac's idea sounds pretty good. A short range, powerful beam is more balanced than a long range energy weapon. On the restrictions, it should cost a lot (about as much as a Siege Carrier, probably), but if it's a beam, it shouldn't disable the ship.

Why have a superweapon when you can focus on creating fast powerfull ships that are less than fairly priced. I think the pirates have to work on creating better ships, not putting super guns on their crappy ships.

For those who don't know, here is my strategy. KILL OFF EVERYONE! There. Mix that with some actual strategy and you get the idea. As for why I decided on a superweapon rather than a better ship. Lord Asriel had asked for ideas for a new weapon. I sent him an e-mail giving the basic stats of the buster cannon. He said to post it to see how fast Macavengers head would explode. So I did. Unfortunatly, it didn't explode. Rak and I got some good prelim rules for it togethor and voila. As for how I got the inspiration for the giant beam weapon from hell and the name; I'm an anime freak. The new restrictions look pretty good actually. So I guess we'll take those and terrorize the HC in a little while.

Oh, do tell, my e-mail program is open now. My technique was to kill all Buster Cannon ships before they got in range, but your sounds like it might be a bit deeper and better.
