You can only have an NPC as an ally fighting along beside your main character if you use a turn based system. If you just want an NPC that is non hostile to you just set their stanina to 0.

Welcome to the boards, Yeroc!
NPCs can either be enemies or non-enemies. Currently, non-enemies are not able to attack unless you use a turn based combat system. However, enemies will attack non-enemies even though they cannot be damaged. This is demonstrated in Pillars of Garendall with Stark Bledfast's Spells Expander plugin. In this plugin, there is a spell called "magic mirror" which creates a non-enemy which follows you around. Sometimes, enemies will attack the non-enemy instead of you.

What exactly is a turn-based combat system?

If you have ever played Final Fantasy, pokemon etc they have turn based battle systems.
Here is an example of a hero against 2 enemies. The first shows how CS's real time battle engine does it and the second shows how a turn based engine does it.
Enemies see hero Enemies approach hero Hero has to fight both enemies at the same time
Enemies see hero Screen usually goes to a specific battle screen Hero fights one monster Monster 1 fights hero Monster 2 fights hero Hero fights one monster Monster 1 fights hero etc
This carries on until either the hero or all the enemies die. This is often used in games involving multiple parties.
I hope that answered your question. Just don't ask me how you make one in CS as I have no idea at all.

Can NPCs cast spells? I know they can use items.

Yes they can. It's in the NPC building where you make the adjustments. (i.e. New-> NPC; Battle tab; Make sure they have spells selected in the magic tab.) They can't cast what you want them to cast, however. They will pick the spells Randomly? from the choices you make in this list.

I rather think it means that he'd really like a new version of Coldstone with fewer bugs and more features. (Wouldn't we all?) I've certainly heard nothing about any plans for such a version to actually exist , though...
