I think it would be a great idea for us to have a chatroom with ichat specificly for us coldstone users. I have opened a chatroom called Coldstone Chat. If you don't know how to join a chatroon you press file, go to chat, and type in "Coldstone Chat" in the blank.

Great idea! I'm all for it.
*Goes into chatroom... Lookn good, you're there! For AIM users, this is just like any other chat, so treat it like that. I think this should be maintained fulltime by people like Stark and RD (*hint hint, get on there!).
Anyway, great idea!

Unlike a game chatroom which has thousands of potential participants to chose from, Coldstone is a relatively small community and I dare say most of us do not have the time or desire to hang out and gab. Compare the number of members who regularly post on this forum with the number who frequent EVN board, or just compare how many threads each has in the last ten days, and you will see why I don't give it much chance of success.

Are you suggesting this is a paid job. If I were doing this fulltime, somebody's gotta pay the bills. It's one thing to duck in and out of this forum a couple of times during the day. It's totally unrealistic to go on a chatroom for hours at a time unless you're a student, freeloading off your parents, and having nothing better to do. You can't be serious.

To be honest I don't like this forum that much. There are very slow response times and too many restrictions. On the CRC Forum I can post something and have someone reply within a few hours. There is also much more flexibility. You can't really just chat on here. I let people just chat on the CRC. Just a question RD have you been on the crc forum? Just try it. Everyone who's a member likes it. You'd be surprised by how many people actually post on it compared to here. And anyway, we could use someone with your coldstone knowledge to be part of it. You say that there is a very small coldstone community. Before I made the CRC the only community was this forum. And to tell you the truth, it was not much better than a support forum. To have a community people need to be able to talk freely to each other about whatever they want. The more people that join then the bigger the community. I think that you underestimate how successful a chat room could be. I mean the CRC is miles more successful than I thought it would be. I was expecting one or two people to have a quick look at it then dismiss it. I was wrong. I don't mean to offend you but there won't ever be a community for coldstone if people won't try and, like you, just dismiss things that will try and build a community as pointless. I am trying my hardest to create a community. I am giving up time that I could spend on making my games trying to help others make their games. I am a student and I am trying to find time in-between homework and revision to keep the CRC up-to-date. I am willing to actually pay, out of my own money, for a decent server and URL for the CRC. When I have the money I will do. All I see you doing is not having confidence in any attempt to make a community.

Pilky, I do not want to be a wet blanket (I could easily be that) and I don't intend to squelsh your efforts. You have obviously put a lot of effort into the new project and much of it is well done. If one wants to chat about the software, or anything else it seems, you offer an alternative. If one wants to solve a problem, the more logical place to be is on this forum where a greater number of persons who have unique areas of knowledge see the post and respond if they have something to contribute. A large number of members check this board and only become "vocal" when something of their particular interest is posted. Many such talented persons only visit sporatically.

Yes. And I read through every thread. It is (as you say) largely chat by about five or six members there. I'm sorry, but I did not find anything I felt I needed to add to.
You say that there is a very small coldstone community.
To be honest, I said there was a relatively small community, and I was addressing the on-line real-time chatroom and not another forum such as you have on CRC.
Before I made the CRC the only community was this forum. And to tell you the truth, it was not much better than a support forum.
You hit the nail on the head that time. That's just what this is - a support forum composed of those who need to know how, and those who have been there, done that and want to help others succeed.
I think that you underestimate how successful a chat room could be.
CRC does not have a chatroom, it does have a web board.
I don't mean to offend you but there won't ever be a community for coldstone if people won't try and, like you, just dismiss things that will try and build a community as pointless.
Let's get the facts straight. I did not dismiss anything. I suggested the on-line, real-time chat has little chance for being effective given the number of potential participants.
**All I see you doing is not having confidence in any attempt to make a community. **
Please look more closely. I wish you success with your community forum which was not the topic of this thread. ~RD
I appreciate your efforts, but I agree with RD. You seem to be trying to create a parallel site where people will come and you've added a chat board. Some major companies do that, like AOL, and they pay a great deal to monitor the chat boards and it takes a great deal of time. It seems to me that you seem discouraged that not everyone wants to come to your site and chat. I hope that you'll feel good about the people who do want that kind of interaction. I don't. I don't have the time nor do I want to get that involved. This site allows me to keep a distance and not be emotionally involved.
As for community, this is a community. It's more quiet right now than other boards, but that's the way it is. A lot of people on this board have created things for the entire community to use, and that alone tells me of the quality of people who post on this board. You are one of those people who make a difference.
I'm here, initially anyway, for the ideas and the support in using Coldstone and creating games that are generated by the terrific people who post here. If they want to post on your site, then that's great! But if they want to post on this site, then that's terrific too! I've made a friend from being on this board, and we support each other, by e-mail, in our game-making in ways that I don't want to professionally reveal about my game here (for the sake of good business practices). So good things happen here.
I just hope that you feel good about your efforts without comparing your site to this site. I hope that you'll continue to play the role in this community that you've chosen to do. It has always been your choice to do what you do. I believe that you will, and will find it rewarding. Good luck.
(edit) RD and I were writing at the same time, and he posted first!

If the CRC does not have a chat room then what am I talking to kryten and ledorax on at this very moment?

I don't know. A long-distance conference call perhaps? Nowhere on your site did I find a link to on-line chat. I think one needs to be on AOL or iChat for that. Frankly, I don't have the time for that.

Holy cow, it's NOT a chat room! I couldn't find any chat room either, but another board. A bit misleading in posts here.
Your board sounds like it has some really good places to visit. But I have found anything there that I can't get here. I like the way you have laid it out too. Looks nice. Back to topic: I use Fire to chat with people. It has an AOL link up, Yahoo link, IRC link, ICQ link, Jabber link, and MSN link. But it doesn't have a way to join a chat room. I can create one, not join. There must be others who share my problem. My wife uses yahoo Mess-anger.
------------------ -Albadar- - - - - - - - - - - Just trying...
Right. You open up iChat or AOL messenger. I only know the instructions for iChat. Here they are:
Goto the file menu. Select "Go to Chat" Type in "Coldstone Chat"
That's it. I need to put it on the CRC homepage but I am still busy updating other parts of the site. I have put a message on the CRC forum
RD: I'm sorry, fulltime was not the right word... What I meant is that when you're on just doing nothing, or posting here, then maybe you could log on there just to be available for people to talk to. I have made it a habit in fact, and right now i see 4 other people on at the same time. This has a lot of potential to be good, so give it a try.
There is currently me and 7 others on the chat room.
Well, I think that it's clear that a person can log into ichat and how to do it. I think it's getting rather mundane when a person posts how many people are there. Does it have value? Sure, if that's your cup of tea. But there's a bit more badgering going on that's appropriate.
Meanwhile, have a good chat!
