Messed-up map editor

Here's my situation. I click on the map editor and then click OK. Then I get:
"An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled.
The application must shut down."
This happens everytime I try to edit a map. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NOTE: This started happening today.

To me this has happened when I had to fill in something, like a name for something or some value, and I did not do it. In this case I just had to give a name and everything worked out fine. Is a bug though. Instead of crashing it should say: give a value!

If this is not the problem, I don't know what it is.

That's not the problem, but thanks anyway.

Is something missing? An image? A script? Is one of the files corrupted? Or has one of the files been saved in a format that coldstone can not read?

No all the way around. If I contact Ambrosia, do you think they will send me a working disc?

OK to what? The "New Map" dialog? Or something else?

If it's the "New Map" dialog, what numbers are you using with it?

What version of Coldstone are you running? What OS?

This occurred to me under Coldstone 1.0 when I would double click on any tile in the tile selection window. The update to 1.0.1 fixed this bug.

As Glenn asked, what version of Coldstone are you using? If you have the older 1.0 version, then grab the update and this problem should go away.

I'm using version 1.0.1 on OS 8.6.
Also, this didn't happen when I first got Coldstone. It started happening the day I posted this topic.

I have this same set-up, for the record. So let's see what we can do to find and figure out the problem.

You stated that when you click on the map editor button, and then click OK to create a new map, that you get that error and things shut down immediately.

I have the following questions:

  • Does this only happen for new maps, or does it occur for existing maps as well?
  • What do you have in your Pictures directory?
  • Are you running Coldstone from the CD or from the hard drive?
  • Did you do a full install of Coldstone(ie, all the picture libraries) from the CD?
  • Does a map try to open and then shut down, or does it shut down without trying to open the map?

I'm making a new game, so I haven't made any maps yet. So only new maps.

I only have tiles and the main character in the pictures folder. If you're asking what type of files, I have pics and pngs.

I'm running Coldstone from the CD.

I have all of the pictures files and stuff on the CD, but not on my computer.

And finally, it shuts down before trying to load the map.

Copy the files from the CD to your computer. Ambrosia products are not meant to run off the CD and bad things can happen when you do this.

I realize that things worked before, and I'm not going to guarentee that this will fix things for you. But Coldstone was not designed to be run from the CD and odd things and crashes can and will occur by running it in this way.

What it sounds like it is doing is trying to open a new file on the CD which, obviously, can't occur.

(edit) Addendum clarification - You only need to have the application on your computer. The art libraries, etc, you should be able to leave on the CD and only use when you need one of the pics if space is an issue. But definitely copy the Coldstone application to your hard drive. (/edit)

I copied Coldstone onto my computer and it still has the same error. Anything else I can do?

For testing purposes, create a whole new game(the game you are currently working on should have all of its data in a seperate folder, so you won't lose anything) in a new folder. Then, without doing anything else, try to create a new map. Can you?

No, no I can't. Also, I tried to edit an existing map (I chose Tutorial) and it didn't shut down. But it didn't work, either. The tile selection window appeared, but the actual map editor didn't. If this isn't fixable, do you think that if I tell Ambrosia they will send me another copy?

Me, I wouldn't think so. But you have a few things to do before you get to that point.

1st:
Copy ALL files from the CD to your hard drive.
2nd:
Remove the CD from your drive and start the program.
3rd:
Try to open the tutorial game from your own drive (you saved it here)
Then get back to us. (I'll be on IRC if that helps you out.)

Just trying...

Uf, that did nothing. How about if I download if from the site? Would that do anything? It's a new copy, right?

Yes, go ahead and download a new copy and try with that fresh copy. You may want/need to trash your coldstone preferences and start anew. Something is definitely goofy.

Damn it! Damn it all to hell!!!! Sorry. Anyway, the download didn't work (it never did, I actually bought Coldstone without trying the demo, thank God I like it), could this have anything to do with my slow connection (56K)? Is there any other places I could download it from?

That's a REALbasic-specific error. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I get that in a few different REALbasic apps every now and again. Try increasing the memory allocation of Coldstone. Could be that you're running out of RAM cause you installed a new Extension and/or Control Panel since you last used it and it worked. Also, try going to the Extensions Manager, and choose "Mac OS 8.6 Base" or something like that for the extensions set. This will reduce your Extensions and Control Panels to what the computer came with. If these things don't work, try downloading the latest Carbon Lib.
