IRC

Why isn't it logging onto the server in my irc? I shut down, restarted and did everything I could think of with my computer. It always thinks I'm offline. What's wrong??

I have to report I will NOT be on IRC till someone answers. And it's really upsetting when barely anyone even reads it to try to help. 12 people? Come now, I posted another topic around the same time and got 33 reads. I mean, you're supposed to HELP, not choose just the "interesting" topics and help with those.

First of all, I can't speak for anyone else - but the reason I ignore the majority of IRC related topics is because I don't know much at all about it. So I probably couldn't do much to help.

So you can't login to ambrosia's servers or any others, is that the problem? Also what client are you using? What are the exact errors (if any) you are getting? Have you tried using another client to see if it is a problem specific to the client you are currently using?

Even if I was able to give you a good answer, I still wouldn't be able to do anything about it until I had more information. Please try to be a bit more specific in such problem related posts.

Finally: It may not be my place to say so, but I don't generally respond well to threats and insults. If you are really looking for help, please refrain from such nasties. I realize that you may be frustrated with the situation - but including the aforementioned nasties will definitely not encourage me to respond.

I don't mean i refuse to go on irc, I mean that I can't

I didn't mean to insult anyone, and i was referring to reads, not responds. I was not threatening anyone, and if i get karmaslapped I will be upset, cause there was no reason for it.

I am using ShadowIRC

I just tried the IRC that comes with Mozilla and it works just fine. I don't normally do IRC because I don't have time... got to earn a livin'. I read every post but I only answer a few because I am inexperienced not rude.

If that is the case, then I am sorry for the accusations - but I still think the line "I mean, you're supposed to HELP, not choose just the "interesting" topics and help with those." is a little harsh. ๐Ÿ™‚

In the spirit of being a good sport, however, I downloaded ShadowIRC and fired it up. I opned up the Preferences and set up 'Connection 1' to hop on to ambrosia's IRC server. (server address: irc.ambrosiasw.com) and stuck in a nickname. When I chose Open Connection 1 it connected fine and using the command /join #coldstone appeared to work too - I can't say for sure because ShadowIRC crashed right away...and continues to crash shortly after startup for me. But, that is neither here nor there.

Where is the problem coming in for you? Did you set up the preferences similarly? If not what are your current settings? I don't expect I'll try ShadowIRC again, but maybe if you offer some more specifics I may be able to be of more help.

As an aside: I have found upk and Mozilla to both work well - if you are willing to try an alternative client.

Thank you sanko, and apology excepted, and I am sorry too for being harsh. I was upset, and lost my head. The preferences are EXACTLY the same as you mentioned. This happens right when I open it. It seems to try to connect, then after around 2 minutes it says I'm offline.

I am trying mozilla, and it is funny because now I only ahve around 12 megabytes left on my hard drive.

Update: UGH It gets an error everytime I try to download it, and I tried upk but the "application that created it could not be found." I downloaded both about 3 times. sigh I can't do much with my computer now-everything gets broken or errored in some way. It freezes almost everytime I start it up...Sorry, had to rant. If you're curious I am using an iMac, the original.

if you've had the program for over thirty days this might be the lock out.

i assume you're on OS9 or lower so try Ircle here: (url="http://"http://www.ircle.com/download.shtml")http://www.ircle.com/download.shtml(/url)

if you have OSX try Snak

Um, if you only have 12 megabytes left on a hard drive, that's a bad thing. Delete some unneeded stuff off your drive...it's probably horribly fragmented right now, as it is.

Thanks stray, but I can't figure out how to get the connection to be set to irc.ambrosia.com I searched the preferences and there is absolutely NO way to change it. I am using Ircle. I should just give up. Nothing is going to work.

Firstly, the address is irc.ambrosia.net, not ambrosiasw.com. Port is 6667, channel is #coldstone. To change the preferences in IRCle, IIRC, go to Edit:Preferences:Connections. Either that or choose 'New Connection' from the File menu, I think. Type in the correct data and it should work fine.

Well, neither of those exist in ircle. The prefs are under file, and there is no new connection command. The prefs have abosultely NOTHING to do with connections, which bugs me. There is not one thing that can change the connections. I searched everywhere, nothing. :frown: ๐Ÿ˜•

As for the 12 mb, we have a network at my house, and a thing called the server. I put something that took up around 300 mb on there. Now I have 286 mb left :).

Fluffy, try this ghetto method:

type into the input line:
/server irc.ambrosia.net
Then wait a few seconds...then:
/join #coldstone

Tell me if that works.

BTW, I'm guessing your problem is that you don't have the connections window displayed...I don't have ircle on this computer, but if I remember correctly, there is a toolbar choice named "Windows"...make sure the "Connection" window is checked...or it might be called "Servers" or something like that. In that newly opened window, highlight the first connection choice, click edit, click edit server, click add server, type in irc.ambrosia.net, click ok. then click connect.

Anyway, just test out my first set of instructions first.

No problem, glad I could help!

Wish me luck...I interviewed for a Chairman of our dorm hall's special interest council -- it is a pretty high up position, but I really, really want to get it.

Good luck Gluey.

If you get the position does that mean that you will be a Chairman of special interest? ๐Ÿ™‚
