Escape Velocity: Eon

Ok, ok, ok. This debate is getting a little too out of hand.

I like JTH's idea of using some names from Hebrew or another language, and I also like Swithich's idea of using Latin. There could be times in the TC where some important character in the storyline with a Latin name, while there could be another character named Dr. Issachar. Only the non-humans would have stranger names.

And JTH is correct. In EV Nova, every person, including the Vell-os, are all human. While the Vell-os are telepathics, they still came from Earth. The Polaris came from Earth as well, they just left before the game started.

However, I am somewhat uncomfortable about the ideas here. If all of you would like to debate over which language has awesome names, could you please do that somewhere else? I was only asking for ideas to make EV: Eon or whatever I'll call it awesome.

This thread hijacking is brought to you by JoshTigerheart's Department of Useless Plugs!

Anyways , If I get a chance, I'll look over your back story and offer some commentary on it.

@ue_research---development, on Jan 8 2008, 06:22 AM, said in Escape Velocity: Eon:

While I do agree that the writers of that time period tended to use 'meaningful' names, each project (novel, short story, TC, or whatever) should evaluate whether they're appropriate on a case-by-case basis, and figure out how to use them effectively (whether with the Latin roots you suggested, which would fit in better in some cases than in others), or with mythological references, or something else.

And that is how this all started. A few posts back in a little post where I was simply giving suggestions for ways to improve the back story, and the subsequent writing. That was before everyone jumped on the bandwagon and said that my name idea was a horrible idea.

Every TC/plug is different, I would expect the author of each story to use methods from many genres and styles. I was just recommending for naming people a way, I find attractive and that makes distinct sounding names from a supposedly exotic future universe a lot easier.

And that is all I wanted to recommend for your back story (please look at the original posts through those eyes...if you didn't the first time).

Plus the organizational timeline/preambles thing. But those are all just recommendations.

Oh, and I can't see how you are disappointed about the discussion, it has kept your thread at the top of EVDC for over about a week. Free pub! 😛

I didn't say it was a horrible idea. I just disagreed and explained my opinion.

Alright, alright, we're all a bit culpable (at least me and Josh :p). But OP has already said he doesn't want any more off-topic posts.

ON TOPIC: I suggest you take a look at the Non-Technical EVN Bible. It has a lot of good general advice regarding writing and other aspects of development.

I wasn't disappointed. I was just getting uncomfortable with the debate over Latin vs. Actual Believable Names. Though it did keep my thread at the top...

Also, I'm wondering how to make a ship CORRECTLY in MissionComputer. As I told JTH, I ended up with an Adult Wraith. Anyone got a list of instructions on how to make the ship you want to appear in the game correctly?

By the way, Josh, no offense, but it would be kind of funny if you had a department of thread hijacking. 😛 As I said, no offense. When I read your post, I thought, Why on earth would the Department of Useless Plugs hijack my thread?

It was testing out its new Thread Hijacking plug. It adds an outfit to the game that allows ships to board, plunder, and capture topics on webboards. They're still working out the bugs...

Check your shan and see what rles it is pointing too.

I was just wondering if any of you guys are related to Pufer. These are some of the longes posts I've ever seen on the EVDC.

I don't recall messing with those... I only messed with the outfit, weapon, system, and spob resource. So what are those?

And by the way, when you say the ships can board, plunder, and capture topics, does it do it in-game or something? (I already know this is a joke. I was just wondering how strange this "plug" could be.)

Shans are the resources that point to the graphics for the ship with the corresponding I.D. So ship 128 would use shan 128. The rles (specifially rleDs) are where the graphics are stored for the sprite.

And yes, they do intend for it to work in-game, as well as out of game. If all goes well, you may see large fleets entering a topic you are reading and stealing it or stealing posts from within the topic.

So possibly within the next 5 minutes UE_Research & Development's posts will be stolen by a huge fleet of Federation Carriers? That's just great. I guess it's up to me to create... the 'Thread Hijacker Repellant'! Now how would I do that... (UE, I didn't mean to pick on you. I meant no offense. Sorry for any trouble this might cause.)

Thanks for the info though. How do you get the descriptions for the ships to appear though? They don't seemed to be connected to anything, save for the spobs.

(EDIT) You have my thanks, JTH! I got my ship to appear correctly. Could you help me with the descriptions now?

Shipyard is 13,000 + your ID number - 128. So ship 128 would be 13,000, 129 would be 13,001, and so on. For escort descs, it's 14,000 instead.

That's really helpful. Thanks.

I'm wondering if I could change the name of EV: Eon to EV: Scarred. I chose Scarred because what every faction does in the universe "scars" it, and is remembered, like you would with a scar on your back, by the elders who lived through the major events.

Yesterday, I tried to make another ship. I was sure I got the shan correct, but instead, a Rebel IDA Frigate appeared instead. What the heck is wrong with that? I'm going to try another ship.

(EDIT) The Rebel IDA Frigate appeared again. Why is that?

Sorry I have no idea how to do this. In my opinion making the name timeless is a better idea.....

Just wishing you all the best luck/support with your TC because it sounds amazing:

I have read your back story and was very confused with it... if this is 500 years after the Nova game then wouldn't Krane already be dead no matter what happens (assuming you have completed each storyline)?

Or are you playing this by you (the pilot) never intervened at nova (never existed) and now you are.... because then even so wouldn't krane be dead.... (500 years + her age to begin with  ). For that then why not change the name to someone else (Krane dies of old age blahdy blah and her successor is equally as evil).

New thought: Does Krane's psychic abilities make her age slowly as well. ( I doubt this)...

On the name themes: (sorry if you don't want this carried on) My name is Terao which is Japanese. In english this translates to temple tail. I think just having names like mine that once translated (to english which I assume the pilot is... or might not be.....) mean something irrelevant could be quite nice because they're odd etc.

On my pilot idea why not have it that when you start a new pilot you can pick a faction to belong to (never understood why polaris etc would trust a human when the federation would never trust an alien/polaris). Then you are expected by the faction to work your way up.... while having the enemy of your faction kill you if spotted). Language issues within the game can be solved by translators (I think Josh mentioned he has these in his novel?) so to understand an enemy/neutral faction you'd need a translater... I have no idea how to set about doing this (maybe one day I will )

Also I think you should try other people's add ons/TC (to see what else you could add/improve):
Anthema chapters (never played but they seem quite fascinating)
Arpia 2 (Played+enjoyed but not for long and for a plugin designer like yourself i'd recommend having a look).
Polycon deserves a special mention as it's the only TC completed for Nova and it's like a warped version of Override because thus there is sooooo much I can play around with.... (only have the first version of it and still going strong  )

I hope my ramble (can't really call them comments....) has help and once again I wish you all the best!

Edit: You have stated in your news (on your website blog thingy) that you have made some more ships and weapons.... Can you uploads more pictures then?

Are you building your TC with the original Nova Data in your data files folder?

Spoiler

Krane was killed by Vehemel, the T0

. I think I mentioned that on page 2 of this thread.

The pilot does not exist during the events of EV: Scarred (that's what I'll call it for now). Only after the 500 years is when the pilot purchases their first ship and enters the galaxy.

I don't know why, but I disagree with the second idea. On the other hand, if the storyline to get into is hard, such as the Polaris one, it would be helpful, and also, that idea was already made in PlugPack V17 as NewCharacters. I will make the Scarred storylines somewhat easy to get into... somewhat.

I've never played Anathema before... About ARPIA, I could not get into the first mission even though my combat rating is past what they want and I also have and IDA Frigate... I'm like, what the crap? It won't accept me.

Polycon is amazing for a TC. While the grammar and spelling isn't too good, the graphics are pretty good, but the game swears a lot. In fact, I use Polycon to experiment with the MC resources. When I was having problems with the ship and shan resources, I was doing that on Polycon. (I think Nova is a little too risky to try...) I have made Earth inhabitable, and I've done much more stuff. I also modify the game by taking out the swear words. 😄

Use Absolute Minimum. It contains only the resources absolutely needed to run Nova, so you can put your TC files in the plug-ins folder while AM is in the data folder. You can find it on the addons page.

I always made a second copy of nova and put it in the EVNEW folder. That way I didn't screw over the actual game, and have to reinstall.

On the idea of set storylines, I don't think it is a bad idea. I mean, it wouldn't be very likely that you happen to be this trustworthy, even-handed individual, that doesn't take sides and comes from a neutral perspective. On the other hand, it takes some of the fun out of the game if you just enter into a storyline from which you can never vary.

Still I like the idea.

Oh, and KoM, I think that everyone on EVDC knows the storylines of EV:N like the back of their hand. I mean, that is just my opinion, but you won't find a lot of newbie Nova players just wandering in to make a plug. Most have played throught EV:N a few times, if not having played all 6 storylines and the 2 minor lines all the way to completion.

My answers/questions/opinion (you get the point?) are in bold (I've cut out the bits I can't answer)...

The name themes are okay, I just didn't want people to use my thread as a place to debate about which names sound cooler. yeah I guessed which is why i apologised because I didn't want it so seem like I was trying to start it back up Also, your name sounds pretty interesting. **Thanks:D ** Do you have any other Japanese names you know of? I have a few Italian ones: Alessio, Dario/a plus Lithuanian ones: Vladas, Rhema or Russian: Svetlana (Off topic: I'm part Italian, English, Welsh and Lithuanian, so I should be good with exotic names) Also I'm not sure about this but I swear I heard that Phoebe means "field of flowers" in Japanese and Shoyu is one (though I don't know the meaning of it... If there is one of course?) I will find out more for you (obviously you could research them on google etc but i'll try find the meaning in Japanese as well.

I don't know why, but I disagree with the second idea. ( <_<No fair ) On the other hand, if the storyline to get into is hard, such as the Polaris one, it would be helpful, and also, that idea was already made in PlugPack V17 as NewCharacters. Yeah I know (tis why I suggested playing around with other peoples plugins...) plus the characters plug was a great idea and I think it has a lot of potential (Example: It was always established that Krane was evil when she could have been misunderstood or framed? With something like the characters plug you could pick the federation and be Krane's son/daughter and unravel first what Krane is actually like then start sorting out current event (the rest of the Fed line). By having the choice of selecting what race/faction you are at the start of the game, I think it could be like three/how many ractions you have different stories of the same event (okay Nova did do this but e.g again Krane was always evil and no-one ever disagreed...). So the three different factions blame each other (a triangle - one on one on one). All have totally different reasons for attacking each other and only by joining the faction do you find out why they attack the others (if the player joins the opposing faction then that faction could have their own views about what happened even if they aren't true)... I will make the Scarred storylines somewhat easy to get into... somewhat. Why? Make a challenge....?:)

I've never played Anathema before... About ARPIA, I could not get into the first mission even though my combat rating is past what they want and I also have and IDA Frigate... I'm like, what the crap? It won't accept me. Were you already in a storyline? Or start Nova again and try Arpia again?

Polycon is amazing for a TC. While the grammar and spelling isn't too good, the graphics are pretty good, but the game swears a lot. In fact, I use Polycon to experiment with the MC resources. Ok just didn't want you to miss out:)

I have played through EV:N a few times, and I have finished the Fed, Rebel, and Vell-os storylines. My friend has also finished the Fed and the Polaris. If I am correct, the Wild Geese storyline should count, right? I know I haven't played through the entire Bounty Hunter storyline.

I made a new file on ARPIA. I don't know why that is happening, but oh well. The ships are very cool, though.

That is the point of joining storylines. You will find out WHY this faction, such as the Rebels, do what they do, like attack the Federation. Sometimes it's hard to find their purpose of doing so, sometimes it is easy. The only reason I would use a certain plug to get into a storyline is if it is too hard to get into the storyline.
