EVN Game Engine

Whats it runnin'?

I was just wondering if any one knows what engine EVN runs on. Was it homemade by Ambrosia, or what? It'd be cool if it ran on the Unreal engine...

Isn't Unreal engine for 3d FPS games?

I heard it runs on petrol. And the blood of virgins.

Unreal has been turned into some very different things. There was a very cool "Aliens" based mod some of my friends were playing a while back that was overhead squad-based tactics.

Anyway, to answer your question: EVN is a custom creation by Matt Burch and Ambrosia. It is not related to Unreal, Doom, Quake, Coldstone, Ares, or anything else.

Some really interesting substances... I want to buy blood of virgins hot dogs..

Flamingblade: If it ran on the unreal engine, then we would be able to create 3D models and other nifty stuff. Pretty unlikely since we have to prerender graphics or what.

Prerendering gives us much more detail though. I would really like to see some of the really complex ships in Unreal. Not that the NOVA ships are complex, but try one of the aftermath ones.

The engine is based on SpriteWorld. Other than that, it's custom. I know the base library has been hacked a lot.

Anyway, if it was based on Unreal or something it'd be 3d, not made with sprites 😛

And would probably be more expensive.

Well, for some clarification on of the Unreal Engine, there is no reason why you could not use it for a multiplayer EV. It is infinatley expandable and, as was proven in 2k4, can be used for space combat without issues (besides performance hits).

As for EVN, it is a sprite-based 2D engine, making EV 3D would be an... interesting thing to do, but it would actually work if done correctly. Multiplayer woud be mostly impossible to do if you were planning on keeping the EV timescale. You would have to change it to #seconds=day and that would just be weird as far as the current EV is concerned.

Couldn't you set up Nova to be 3D if you had the view from like, 500m on the y-axis above the ship, then set restricing boundaries ( a sphere for instance) to make a border around a system? Of course, that would require a new engine, and raise the price to about $50. Oh well, it's still cool. Although, it is too bad that EV will be dead soon. It may soon go the way of "Bolo" and "Missile Command". sigh 😞

What makes you think it will be dead soon?

Ambrosia's going bust! 😮

Or maybe they realised EVN is such a terrible game so they've decided to disband it. 😛

Really? I've heard nothing about this.

Nova has a way to go yet.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Ahem...

EVN will outlive most of us around here (at least in terms of the forums).

Due to the plug-in system, EVN has infinite replayability. So as long as there are TC's, then EVN still has life.

All too true.
