I hadn't played POG for a while, but when the Damsels came out I wanted to try it.
Unfortunately, I get a "Pillars of Garendall has quit with an error of type 3" every time I try to start POG.
I am running Mac OS 9.2.2 - not Classic, no OS X - and I have CarbonLib 1.6. David says I probably have an extension conflict. But I have tried with only the Apple extension set loaded, and that doesn't help.
I have not loaded any new software for months, and updates have only been Apple system and sideshow updates - QuickTime, etc.
Besides, how come POG seems to be the only software affected? The EV series and Cythera still work fine. Spidey's Avernum series, Geneforge 1 and 2, and Nethergate still work fine. So what is different with POG? Does anybody know exactly what POG needs, so I could try turning off everything else?

Are you running PoG 1.0.2? If you aren't, you should grab the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=pog&category;=essentials&display;=date&file;=mac_pog_full_update.sit")update(/url).

Running 1.0.2 and Trinity. I reloaded them from the download in case my application had been hit, but it didn't make any difference.
Just a thought - have you tried throwing away your preference file? I run OS 9.2.2 also and have had no problems like yours. Don't give up hope. We will try to help you solve this. ~RD

Threw it away, didn't make any difference, and didn't create a new preferences file. So I assume it is not getting that far.
Just a thought. I don't remember whether or not I reset my colors/resolution before playing in the past. Does POG require a specific resolution or number of colors? Not mentioned in the Readme or manual.
A follow-up. I went back and tried this. Set to 640*480 and thousands of colors instead of 1280 and millions. POG quit with a type 1 error instead of a type 3.

At this point I suggest you post your experience on "Help is on the way" board where David Dunham checks in on Monday morning. Unless some other members here have some ideas about what is happening (or not happening in this case) David is your best bet. I wish you success. ~RD

TITLE Mac OS: Type 3 or Type 10 Error May Occur If Internet Config Is Missing
Article ID: 60763 Created: 11/16/00 Modified: 6/10/02 TOPIC
When opening an application a Type 3 or a Type 10 error occurs if the Internet Config Extension has been removed from the Extensions folder. DISCUSSION
Symptom
When opening an application an alert box with one of the following error messages appears, and the application does not open: Type 3 error Type 10 error "(Application) cannot be launched because an unexpected error occurred."
Solution If you computer has Mac OS 9.0 or later, use the Software Update control panel to install URL Access 2.3 or later. Make sure that the Internet Config Extension is installed in the Extensions folder inside the System Folder. Note : The Internet Config Extension does not appear in the Extensions Manager control panel. Check inside the Extensions folder itself for the presence or absence of the Internet Config Extension.

Silver Eagle,
Mac OS 9.2.1 installed Internet Config Extension 2.0.7 and URL Access 2.4.1.
However, this is interesting, because I don't use the Location Manager. But when I installed it while trying various setups to get POG working, I got a type 10 error instead of a type 3 error.
Maybe POG has a problem with the newer extensions? Is anybody else working fine with Internet Config 2.0.7 and URL Access 2.4.1? This could have been a change in my system setup since the last time I played POG. But I'm not sure I could get back to OS 9.2.0 at this point. It would be a mess because I have updates for QuickTime, QuickDraw, and Internet Access besides.

Those are the exact two versions which are on my computer (also same OS) and as I said before, I have no problem with PoG. Some other conflict exists somewhere else. I can understand your frustration but don't understand what's wrong. Please keep us informed about whatever you find. I do remember that my games crashed a lot before I increased the memory alloted to PoG. I know I'm grasping at straws here, but I don't have another better suggestion.
I think that the problem is memory allocation (as RD suggested). You could also try upgrading to OS 9.2.2 and seeing if that helps (although I guess it's kind of unlikely).
EDIT: Nevermind. I see that you have OS 9.2.2 (and 9.2.1 installed the Internet config extension). ------------------ Clones are people two. If UPS and Fed-Ex merged, would they be Fed-Up? JohnnyAndrews,
Will PoG work if you remove all plug-ins and just run it vanilla?
I'm assuming it worked before you installed the plug-ins, so try it alone.

I tried giving it 260MB (adding 200000 to the default 60000). Didn't do any good.

He said that he gets the error whenever he launches PoG (he double clicks on the application, and he gets the error, I'm assuming).
And JonnyAndrews, have you tried reinstalling PoG?

I tried reinstalling the original from the CD, and I tried reinstalling v1.0.2 from the original download (along with Trinity). Still got the error.

Did you delete everything, including the preferences file, before reinstalling?
If not, delete your PoG folder and the preference file, reinstall, remove all plug-ins from the plug-ins folder, and then attempt to start up PoG.
Okay, so you are running OS 9.2.2 without OS X, you reinstalled, Pillars of Garendall once worked, but no mysteriously doesn't. You are registered. You tried reinstalling, you redownloaded, you deleted the preference file, you receive a type 3 error, you have the Internet Config (latest version) extension, and you are about to be driven mad because it still won't work. If all this is true, I think that it may be time for this topic to go to Help is on the Way.

EDIT: Hmm, Stark posted 8 hours before me, yet I didn't see him. Oh well. EDIT2: Darn, I hit reply instead of edit.
And I just thought of something. Is it possible for there to be a conflict if you registered then reinstalled? The Garendall Lisence file says that you registered, but the program says you haven't. Could this be the problem?

Finally got it. I had tried deleting my prefs file, which didn't help. But I hadn't found the registration file which is under Garendall, not POG.
Deleting the registration file fixed it. But I've had to e-mail David to ask for a new registration number.
But if anyone else runs into this type 3 error, it may be a crashed registration file.

Perseverance paid off. We had obviously run out of ideas here. I'm very glad for you. Thank you for sharing the information from which we all might learn. If this ever does come up again, I'm sure that someone will remember or perhaps the unlucky individual will be able to find the solution with a search for "type 3 errors."
Queen Ariana will be most pleased that you are finally able to save her daughters.

I think that I deserve some credit
