Recolor a Nova Ship

I want to recolor the federation cruiser to give to the Aurorans. I have no idea what to do or how to do this. Do I duplicate the cruiser resources and recolor with photoshop? Can someone tell me what to do? Terribly sorry, forgot to mention that I use a Mac.

You need to copy the resource into a new resedit document, then use various w00tware applications to get the relD back into pict based sprites (DeRLE, I think). From there you can use photoshop's hue/saturation feature to make it red or whatever, and use EnRLE to put it back in a format that Nova can use.

What's up with that sig?

Back to topic,

Okay that works. Thanks for your help.

I think ArcAngelCounterstrike (sp?) posted a tutorial on recoloring ships w. Photoshop sometime last year, using layers. It used the IDA Frigate as an example, if I remember right. Or was it someone else... or a different year.... Anyway, try a deep search.

(Wow, I'm just a faint sliver above totally unhelpful, aren't I? Sorry!)

hey zhouj i think this topic isn't meant for that you use it as testing topic for your signature. Of course i shouldnt care a bout what you are doing in the webboards but i just want to give you a tip: I think moderators don't like it if you send such kind of topics where other persons need help. Just make a new topic where you test you signature perhaps somebody is even able to help you with your signature. don't take this as critisme just take it as tip.

I'm thinking they actually prefer that I do it within a thread and not start a random new thread specifically for it.

If you open the sprite in something like Photoshop you can adjust the hue/saturation of the picture. This lets you change the whole colour scheme of the ship. If you want to change the colour of only certain parts of the ship you would have to first select the parts you want to change then use the hue/saturation options to change those parts.

Just use an old Image Gallery topic (as they dont bump to the top), or an obscure FAQ topic for sig tests (as they - pretty much - never get read). It saves this type of problem πŸ™‚

As far as Im concerned, its pretty ignorant to use someone's topic like that...

You can avoid mucking up others' threads if you test your sig code by using the edit button to paste it into the body of one of your own old posts. That method doesn't bump a thread to the top of the list, either.

If you search the "Just Tech" board for my name you'll find a script that someone else wrote to allow conversions between html and UBB code -- though my own request for a WYSIWYG way to preview UBB code was responsible for it's production, I never did use it because it's an OS X thing and I'm largely still stuck back in 9-Land.

Edit: Aaarg! Jules beat me to my point! Well, to make up for my redundancy, I'll have to make a contribution to the main topic of this thread.... So here are links to two older topics where ArcAngel, Azratax, and others go through some of the details of methods for changing ship color schemes:

And misspelled. If you are going to do something in binary, be sure to run it through a spellchecker before encoding.

So what is proper webboard etiquette when someone simultaneously helps you and insults you?

Thanks anyway, Orcalover. You've produced something useful.

I don't think I'll be shutting up, though -- if people hadn't "complained," we might not have learned of your work!

And now I'm going to "complain" again: Is there any chance of moving your UBB previewer to a different hosting service? For the sake of the few sites that find good uses for them, I don't want to turn pop-ups off... but the blizzard of windows that Tripod throws up is a bother. Just an idea.

I recently downloaded the layered IDA, and I learned a tip. Here is how to do that little trick:

zoom way in and carefully select the section of ship you wish to recolor. Copy the highlighted are and past it, this will create a new layer. Now use the magic wand and inverse to select the pasted section of ship, then fill the highlight with the color of your choice. Now comes the final part. Make the color layer partly clear, the features of the ship, fans, vents and such, will show through the color. This makes it look like part of the ship has turned a different color.
