What portion of the population at age 10 has perfect typing skills? Or even near-perfect ones? If he hasn't been online or using a computer that long, he certainly has an excuse. Most keyboarding classes aren't mandatory or even offered before at least middle school. He's still in 5th grade (I presume but I could be wrong) so cut him some slack. Seriously, just because you had good typing skills at age 10 doesn't mean everyone did or does. I'd also like to see the stuff you typed or wrote at age 10. You wouldn't be so damn cocky if we actually saw something. I'd also like to take issue with your stereotyping by age and the fact that you assume just because he's from California, it means he's had continuous access to the computer and that he should be educated and intelligent. If you live in California, you need to get out more. If you don't live in California, don't stereotype a place you haven't experienced. The truth about California is that it's a place of extremes. I live in an affluent suburb of Silicon Valley where most people have broadband and gaming computers. And where our schools encourage the usage of technology in most things, not to mention provide one of the best educations available. On the other side of the spectrum, we have places like Aptos, East Compton, or regions like the San Fernando Valley. The schools there are absolutely horrible, poverty and ignorance is rampant. People there have fairly low educational levels and the access to technology is limited and hence, their desire or ability to use technology is also decreased. For the record, San Carlos is in the mid-range in terms of education and socioeconomic conditions in Silicon Valley.

Sorry for the rant, but seriously, lay off on him. If it really annoys you so much, ignore him. Don't act like idiots by constantly telling him to improve his spelling, typing, and grammar. After that much commenting, even the most clueless person would get the idea. People don't improve their typing overnight or when people just tell him to. If nothing happens in a year or two, then maybe one may be justified to criticize him. But even then, we don't know what the personal situation for him is. For all we know, he could be dyslexic, have some learning disorder, or be less mentally capable than others. I think he gets the point by now so either help him out or go find something better to do than complaining about this.

It was p***ing me off too that everyone was laying into the guy. At 10 years old I didn't even have a computer, let alone know how to type.

It seems that there are lot's of people here who like to criticise others on how they post. Maybe it makes them feel superior or something. But just because someone can't type it doesn't make them stupid. I have a close friend who's over 50 years old and can't even spell the word 'book' correctly. But give him 5 numbers to multiply together and he'll get it in 2 seconds. He's richer than anyone else I know!

The kid in question is asking to learn to make plug-in's. With only 10 years of age, I think that he's doing well.

I have returned.

Anyway, besides this guy having bad spelling (Ever heard of hunt and peck? They do teach decent english by 10 in california, don't they?), I think you need to learn to build your own plug. I was making plugs in third grade (uh... that's like 8.) And I couldn't type fast or anything but I could spell and make sentences.

(rant) The reason we accually use spelling and stuff on boards like this is so everyone can understand you at a glance; if someone can't figure it out, they won't likely help. Also, we are intolerant of AOL speech and the like because you have time to sit and write, it isn't like anybody is watching for replies. (/rant)

Now, I'd suggest you search for shipyards, download a pict you think will work, and use it in a plug built for your own pleasure. I had a library of plugs I'd built and never released, most of which were worthless since I'd never finished. I figure if you want a plug for cheating, at least make it yourself.

There, I'm done.

The post was editted 3/2/04, quite a bit before many of the posts in reply which indeed did continue to chastize him. My issue isn't with the criticzing his grammar, it's with having everyone reprimanding him continuously despite the fact that anyone with reasonable mental capacity would have figured it out by then. Even if Zaku can't read a single post well, I'm sure he's at least understood the other 100 posts telling him to use grammar and such. BTW, would you maintain your position if it was found that Zaku was dyslexic? The possibilities are quite varied and numerous. Besides, the issue is probably more related to his typing abilities than anything.

On a different note, the general American populace sucks at grammar. The average SAT II Writing score is in the 500 or 600's which is a curved sub-70% score. Considering that the majority of the test relates to grammar and sentence improvement, I'd be inclined to say that the general American populace is at least somewhat incompetent at grammar. As for a more ancedotal story, my English class still averages a C on grammar tests despite the fact that we should have learned it years ago and I go to supposedly the best non-magnet school in California.

It's just that we don't get any response from Zaku about grammar, no explanation, desire to do better, or even just acknowledging that he's read the posts. The only response I've seen at all is "I'm 10 and can't type well." I'm not saying that Zaku owes us an explanation, but it would be nice to know that he's read the posts. I think that the reason people keep posting about the grammar is that they feel like they haven't gotten through.

zhouj, I'm not trying to be nitpicky or whatever, but you know that a C is supposed to be the average grade, right? I mean, in my school it isn't, but that's because the grades are so inflated, but in general, that's the rule.

Zaku: the spelling in your most recent post is much better than before. Thanks, it's easier to read.

People at my school should not be getting a C. Ever. In AP Calc BC, the vast majority of grades are A's and B's and most of the class is either a junior or sophomore. This isn't due to grade inflation either. English 10 is vastly easier than Calc and most of the people are in accelerated or honors course. I don't do the gramamr homework and I get straight A+'s on the test. It's not hard to get at least a B on them. I mean, the last test was on differentiating between the uses of well and good. And the median GPA is around 3.6 . And like I said before, not the result of grade inflation either.

And if he hasn't read the 100 posts telling him to use better grammar yet, then typing anymore would be futile given that he's probably not going to read it.

Zaku: if you want the plug-in done, contact me somewhat coherently on AIM.

just so that you know, there's a little field under your screen name that says "Location:," and right next to that, yours says "san carlos ca."

As for your next request, that all plugin makers make a list of all their plugs, who made their graphics, and what program their graphics person used to make the graphics, I'm afraid that's next to impossible. There are far too many plugs, and far too many plugin makers to be able to list, and at that, many of them have stopped making plugs years ago. It would be much better to ask questions like: how can I start making plugs? What do I need to start making plugs? What programs can I use to make graphics? If you want someone to teach you how to make plugs, you're in the right place, as that's what this board is all about, just you need to ask the right questions.

It's not as much the grammar as the outrageously time-intensive requests he continually comes up with both here and on the Nova board. We're not slaves, chained to the dark confines of this board and obediently waiting for someone to make a request of us. It would be much better if he decided to make more reasonable requests, ones that we could actually help him carry out.

My point is that we have the option of saying no. Instead of saying no and then writing a paragraph-long diatribe on using good grammar.

if most of the grades in your class are A's and B's that means that the tests are too easy for your class. On the traditional grade scale, the average should always be C by definition. But schools don't really work like that any more.

You want to see if you can pass a test in our AP Calc? A teacher can only make a test so hard before it becomes ridiculous. The issue is that the sample is not the typical bell curve group. If you managed to make the tests even harder and make the average a C, there wouldn't be any A's. We have very large numbers of people with very similar high-level ability and then a few stragglers.

Despite how interesting this argument is (just to put my little bit in, my test scores show that I'm supposed to have above average intelligence, but I failed the Calc B/C exam. Okay, so I didn't study very well, but that's why I like the excuse that I have a lack of desire to learn math. That's probably why I want to be a filmmaker and/or an animator, but enough about me), we're really off topic here. Okay, so I'm not a moderator, but I do want to see zaku's thread through to its conclusion.

Enough about his spelling and grammar problems. If he doesn't intend of shaping up, and fixing his (rather copious) spelling and grammar problems, then you don't have to read the thread. Simple as that. He has a request, and it's our responsibility as a community to help him, or help him see that his requests are unrealistic and that for many of the questions he's asking, he's never going to get the answer he wants. On the flip side, zaku, you have to understand that this is a world community, and for many people here, English isn't the first language, and having so many spelling and grammar errors makes it nearly impossible for them to read. Because of that, they won't help you, even if they have the information that you want, simply because they don't understand what you asked.

Zaku, the trick here is to ask the right questions. Right now, you're asking the wrong questions. Asking the whole community to write you a list of every single plugin that was made is the wrong question. What you could do is make your own list of maybe your top five favorite plugins, and ask for specific tips for how to make your plugins like the ones that you enjoy. As people give you tips, you try them out, play with them, see what changes you can make so that you enjoy what you've done more. Maybe instead of making the Thunderhead simply stronger, what would happen if you make some stats better while balancing them by making other stats worse. How does that change the gameplay? A majority of the things that people learn are by trying something new, practicing, and then adding that new knowledge to the knowledge that they already have. Graphics are similar. While there are far more programs available to you than for making plugs, you have to try them out to see which program fits your personal style. You cannot rely simply on tutorials and by what people tell you here, you have to try things out on your own, you have to practice, you have to make model after model to develop your own creative style.

Lastly, always remember that it's good to show your work to the public to get opinions for how to make your work better. By the same token, however, you can't get too attached to your work, because there will always be someone who doesn't like what you've done. Make sure that you ask that person what specific things they don't like, and what they think you could do to make it better. Of course, you don't have to take their advice, and that's your perogative as the artist (or programmer), but take what they say into consideration because while you might not use the advice for that particular project, perhaps try it in your next project. If you don't like the results, then don't use that tip, but at least you tried it. Well okay, I didn't answer your question. I didn't make a list of plugs, nor am I giving you the name of a specific person who can teach you all you need to know (there isn't one specific Yoda around here), but rather I'm telling you that this is a free and open community that you can use to help you learn what you want to know about making plugins and graphics.

The issue was not if you could pass it. It wasn't if you could pass our AP Calc tests. It was to see if you could get an A on them. BTW, where did you take your Calc class? Although I think personally, this argument is pointless unless I can get you a test of ours for you to take.
