Major ResEdit trouble

Earlier today, ResEdit was working fine. This just started happening abruptly, and has persisted for at least five attempts.

The problem is that when I try to view or copy a large pict resource, ResEdit crashes----big time. I'm running it under Classic, so you'd think that the most a crash can do is bring down the Classic shell, right? Nope. Every time I try to view or copy a large pict resource in ResEdit, all of OSX goes down. The screen dims, and I get that "You need to restart your computer" white box in the center of the screen.

The picts in question are the EVN splash screen (ID 131), and the EVN main menu background (ID 8000).

What could be causing this? ResEdit has more than enough RAM. That's not the issue.

Oh, and starting up in OS9 is a last-resort thing. Last time I did that, the computer couldn't find my system folder and I was unable to start up at all until I got SystemWorks 3 in the mail. Something to do with needing OS9 to be installed on a seperate partition.

if you haven't already, try re-installing it. how much do you have its prefered memory set to?

Edit: if problems still persist, then go here, see if you can't find the answer on the site, or contact the site people and ask them. i gaurenty you'll get a good answer from them.

Preferred size is 40000 k.

I've forgotten where I can download ResEdit again, now that Apple doesn't really support OS9 products. Link? Could I perhaps just delete the preferences file, or will that get rid of NovaTools as well?

Yes, deleting the prefs will also get rid of novatools. However, there is nothing to stop you reinstalling novatools later.

It sounds like your OS 9 install has major problems. Remember that Classic is OS 9, so go ahead and reinstall OS 9. The box you are getting is a kernel panic, which hints that there is something wrong with either your OS 9 or OS X install. OS 9 does not need to be installed on a separate partition, though it couldn't hurt.

Hmmm. Any idea why this would have suddenly started? I discovered that a similar crash occurs when I try to quit ResEdit after opening the list of Pict resources.

However, similar crashes have not occured with any other programs running under Classic.

I'll try reinstalling OS9----that's probably a good idea.

hmmmmmm...... this is quite an odd problem. why not use first aid first, in order to determine if there is a problem to begin with.

I used to hit problems, years ago, moving lots of data round in ResEdit because it would run out of memory. Upping its allocation may fix the problem. I usually give it 10-20 MB.
