I remember a StarWars TC for the original EV and the replacement data files had these spiffy custom StarWars icons. So, I thought it would be neat to make custom icons for my Lost In Space TC and they look pretty good in the res edit icon resources but they don't show up on the files outside of res edit even after I rebuilt the desktop. Has any one else tried this? Anyone got any ideas on what would make them show up?

You can't change the icons via the application, you need to use custom icons for each file. You can either copy and paste an icon onto the file via the get info dialogue, or you can use an icon utility. I recommend the latter.

Once you have created them, copy them into the plugs resource fork as icl8 and icl4 using resource id -16455. They will then display as the default.

Don't you also have to set a flag somewhere that says 'use custom icon'? I sure seem to remember that from somewhere...

Yes, and it can be found in ResEdit's Get Info For This File command in the File menu.

I usually do not and it works just fine, but if you experience problems, sure, set it. You can do that with Get File Info in ResEdit.
That was it. It's the -16455 thing. Didn't realize they had to be that ID number. They work fine now. Thanks.
Now comes the question of making plug icons for OS X. Harder it is, bigger they are.
If I am not mistaken the only way to add an Icon to a plug file under OS X is to paste it on. However, does anybody know of a resource editor for OS X, I would think not as it has an extremley different resource structure. But it would be soooo coool.

Well, if you had even bothered to click on any of the links to icon utilities I provided...

<mischievous grin>
Yes, I did click on a few of your icon utilities, but I meant more of a total resource editor, as in not specific to icons. One that would allow you to edit EV Nova resources just like ResEdit (perhaps a bit nicer UI though). I actually haven't checked the download page in a few months, so I don't know about any of the new utilities.

Unfortunatly there is no basic resouce editor for OS X. Apple has done this because they are trying to phase out the use of the resource fork. In an ideal system everything is in packages and any resources in the localized folder are all data. These files can be converted to resources using a convertor i found somewhere. THey can then be edited with resedit. Its just to bad that there is no way to use ResEdit in X.
