Yeah, I think this sounds like a much simpler idea. How do we decide which submission goes where? - or is that at the discression of the person entering?

Thats at the descression of the person entering. If something is way too good though move them up a level. If you want I'll help run it. (url="http://"mailto:godsunderstudy@yahoo.com")mailto:godsunderstudy@yahoo.com(/url)godsunderstudy@yahoo.com
Okay:
The current revision of the rules: ** There are 3 areas for submission, based on your skill level: Novice / Amatuer / Pro
An entry consists of 1: (up to)1000x1000 scene rendered view of the ship, and 1: (up to) 1000x1000 schematic view (4 angles: top, side, front, and another of users choice).
Entries submitted by Jan 15th, one enty per person. **
Whilst furthur subdivision of the catagories did seem like a good idea, this way means there is a much larger choice for voting, and fairer too.
Comments?
Submitted to where?

Good point....
Im guessing we email them to someone, and then that person uploads them to a site. The entries are all then published after the closing date.
How many entries per person are allowed? A small, a medium, and a large, if they want to?

That depends on how many catagories we have, everyone seems to be split between two minds. Diving the catagories either by ability or ship classes themselves. If we have too many subdivisions we run the risk of having too fewer enteries per catagory.

this sounds like it will be a lot of fun...now just if i could get over my severe case of modeler's block...

Que EVula...
I think having it done by skill would be best.

No, no, I mean having the categories divided by skill, but allowing up to three entries per person: a small, a medium, and a large ship. That'd preserve the original idea, but they would all be together for the purposes of voting.
Whatever. I'll just be working on my ships while looking for a finalized set of rules.
I would also vote for it to be split by skill category.
And, on an almost completely different topic: Ack! Weepul's entering??? Well, there goes my chance to win...

Don't think of Weepul as an impossible-to-reach skill level, but rather as motivation to make yourself even better. You know, much of the time, this sort of motivation (to beat the best) can cause people to win. You might not be able to casually meet his level, but if you spend lots more time than you normally would, you'll find that your skill level (and the level of the image) will rise.

no kidding. Having people like Weepul and Onyx to look up to just pushes you onward, and to greater skill. My advice is to look at all the 3D gallerys you can find, and look at what makes people good. How do they add detail? Where? And look at everyday stuff for interesting shapes. Look up reference images of the underside of cars and stuff for detail, and fighter planes for paneling.
btw, this contest sounds awesome.

Indeed. I've had my share of look-up-to's. Zombat was the original (non-ATMOS) LightWave master. I still look up to Onyx...and I try to do my best so that it's more of a look-sideways than a look-up, especially now that he's moved to LightWave. PyroManiac (wherever he went) was just awesome, of course - he was an entering professional. Meowx has an interesting style, kind of simple but heavy on texturing. And sparky...that latest ship of yours plain rocks. I wish I knew how to work in that style...I really like it. I suppose I could if I worked at it, with plenty of reference material.
I've gotta learn how to make better textures completely from scratch...
So anyway, find inspiration and experiment, and learn through imitation, even. That's what I've done (and am still doing).
However, in the case of Wyvern, who uses POV-ray, IIRC, there's a bit of a limit from the program...no offense to POV-ray, but it is somewhat lacking in many ways.
I'll enter the competition. when is the due date?

I've gotta learn how to make better textures completely from scratch... At least I'm not the only one...
Regardless, I think I'll take a hint from Skyblade and try this Meshworks thing... I still use Strata, of course, but it's mesh editing is somewhat lacking... to say the least.

So, how exactly are the divisions going to be made? Is it going to be, go wherever you think that you fit, or is there going to be an easier way(criteria maybe?) to decide what category to enter under? Sounds fun, hopefully I can get something finished in time.

You decide where you enter based on your own judgement, although the entry may be moved if its obviously submitted in the wrong area.
Entries submitted by Jan 15th, (a maxiumum of 2 entries per person (of diffrent ship class), ie, you could submit a fighter and a crusier, but not two fighters, well, you get the idea).
For now, just get moddeling, while the issues of a website, and a gallery get ironed out. And get as many people as you can involved, the more entries we have, the better. **

I use Maya Personal Learning Edition and it leaves a watermark on images. Can the watermark be ignored in judging?
