Ship Design Competition - Possibility?

Who are the judge(s) going to be?

Whats the judging criteria?

We cant have random people judging work based on their own ideas... Some people at the image gallery absolutely hate a ship sometimes, while the other people absolutely love it. From what Ive learnt, its hard to judge other people's ships unless they were going for a certain critereria. My solution for this, would be to have someone good sketch a cool-looking ship, post it, and have everyone work off of that design.

Comments? clarifications?

I like the idea of everyone just voting. Everyone will use the honor system (no voter-fraud), and if there's enough people voting it won't make much of a difference. I'd definately vote for somebody else in the same category as me if I thought they were better, and I'm sure others would too. Let's use EVula's Lair forums for the vote and an .org or .net account for hosting the rules, etc, and then actual submissions when submission time is up.

I'd prefer 1024x1024 also, instead of the un-computery 1000x1000.

Also, how about extra awards, such as "Best Texture", "Best Weapon System", "Best Engine Glow", and "Best Model" which transcend all size categories? These should probably be decided on by a panel of 3 or 5 judges. Judges should probably be highly-skilled people, like Weepul, and Oynx. And maybe a "Best Duo" or "Best Fighter-Carrier" award should go to the person with the best pair of ships submited, you know, ones that match styles best, and would work together in a plug-in as part of the same government. I think the judges could play around with this a bit.

I agree with that completely. For reasons other than the obvious, I think that would work best because it a) eliminates the chance for people to vote multiple times (not only is it a cookie set on your computer, but I can also check IPs for multiple accounts), provides a very structured way of voting (especially since you can set time-sensitive polls), and c) provides somewhere for discussion (I'd set up a voting forum and a discussion forum, so that the boards don't get cluttered).

Nay...being able to come up with a good-looking, likable, creative design is just as important as having technical skill. It's one thing to take an idea and run with it. It's quite another to come up with an idea yourself.

I think that at some point it would be cool to have a modelling competion. One idea, no specified direction that the ship faces (loose sketch) and everyone interprets it on their own.

It'd also be cool if we had one of these a couple times a year.

My version of the rules:

There are 3 areas for submission, based on your skill level: Novice / Amatuer / Pro

You decide where you enter based on your own judgement, although the entry may be moved if its obviously submitted in the wrong area.

An entry consists of 1: (up to)1024x1024 scene rendered view of the ship, and 1: (up to) 1024x1024 schematic view (4 angles: top, side, front, and another of users choice).

Entries submitted by Jan 15th, (a maxiumum of 2 entries per person (of diffrent ship class),

There will eventually be an evula.org forum to which you will place your votes and put your entries.

Not much has changed but itis up-to-date. I like 1024 instead of 1000. When the Forum is set up you should have two topics:
1.Voting
2.Entries. People provide links to their submission, or email it to somebody who has a .org account so they can put it up. I'll volenteer to be one of those people.

I'm in, let's see all you measily little amatures go up against a real master. Ooops, I might just get beaten up for saying that, lol, it's not the worst that's happened.

Also, we seem to have decided the rules for the most part, what's the reward, besides the warm fuzzy feeling you get from winning :), and boasting rights.

It's really to bad it won't take place later on in the year. I'm using Strata v 1.75+ right now, and won't be getting anything better until after MacWorld. Oh Well.

Where do we submit our entries?

Also, might it not be possible for one to submit more than one ship of the same type? As long as we still have the maximum of 2 entries per person I don't see it as becoming a problem. I know that I for one am very bad at larger ships, but can do smaller ones very well and am torn between sending one of two fighters in.
