To find textures, try going to (url="http://"http://www.stratacafe.com")www.stratacafe.com(/url) and then to the resources section, they have a lot of textures in lots of categories for you to download. I haven't made any of my own, so I can't help you with creating them.

I like long walks, especially those taken by people who annoy me.

Yeah, Ernimtir got there first, StrataCafe is the place to go, but I am putting up a Strata section at (url="http://"http://www.evula.org/ewan/")Ewan's Lair(/url) soon, so keep looking there, and I will get it set up asap.

As for making your own textures, its pretty simple. What I do is make a new file in Fireworks the size I need, and apply grain to it. I then make sure that the colour is all black and white. After that, I apply a gausian blur to it, and then paint it the colours that I need.

I learned what I know about textures from looking at existing textures. At first I just played with the Bump, which is an 8 bit mask, where black is flat, and white is raised. If you have a digital camera, try taking pictures of various textures, sand, wood, a mousepad, whatever. Color it to grayscale, and try using that as the Bump mask. It yeilds interesting results, and you might even like them.

Check StrataCafe's links for tutorials, there are bound to be several out there.

Texture making is simple, in principle. But getting the result you want takes practice. I believe Fireworks would work fine for creating textures, but I have no experiance with it, I only use Photoshop.

Strata textures can be quite complicated. You can have one texture display any number of different surfaces. Using the correct set of maps you can have one texture contain wood, steel, chrome, glass, and glowing neon. Apply that to a surface and it will take on all those qualities where you have specified in your map. The Strata manual has pretty good coverage of how maps work.

If you are a person who, "aquired" Strata and therefore don't have the manual. Start with a glass bottle with a label (I belive that is a basic (url="http://"http://www.stratacafe.com")www.stratacafe.com(/url) texture tutorial.)

The tutorial allows you to generate a glass bottle with a label as one texture, once you understand that you can understand how to make much more complicated maps.

I'll post another topic later with the tutorial directions.
