Submarine TC

Whilst I dont have the time to make a TC, I recently was inspired by the likes of Mantaray's possible TC, and whilst watching the Hunt for Red October. I thought it would be intresting to create a subramine TC. Set in the future? - set in the past? I really dont know, just thought it'd be a cool idea.... Murky underwater, torpedo battles, could be intresting....

Well, I suppose you can use cloaking device to represent the submarine submerging underwater.

Whoa ! A futuristic submarine TC is the best esoteric TC idea one could ever have, way better than water surface TCs !!! The behavior of submarines is very similar to that of spaceships ! Murkiness is really good for simulating deep underwater environments. Developers, prepare the harpoon-launchers !

I am to tired to think of something I could potentially write here and the perspective that no one would ever read that (yet inexistant) signature discourages me even more.

Excellent idea!

Heh, you know I suggested the exact same idea a few months ago. The responses were a little less enthusiastic... it's what gave me the idea for Caribbean in the first place. However, I wouldn't object to some sub-hunting. Hope you get it working, legion!

Indeed. I feel the Nova engine would be well suited for this, as oposed to a surfact ocean TC. All underwater, there would be no problem of ships flying over the 'docks' to land, since in water there is depth, as in space, objects pass under and over each other.

Had some more thoughts since my inital post:

Marine Life, why not add sharks and other animals. Getting attacked by ginat squids ;)! And, whilst the concept may seem slighly brutal, you could somehow transfer the idea of asteroid mining to deep sea fishing.....

I think both a soviet/allies plug, and a futuristic marine fest would be great ideas. Personally, Id love to see a storyline set on earth in say 5000 years time. Where for some reason the population of earth was wiped out and youve been awoken from stasis. Sent into the ocean to discover what went on. Mutated marine life? - Alien colonists?

There is a question what to make of hyperspace. The nautical TC I was working on at one time went around that and the black skies of EVC/EVO by assuming an age of legend where viking ships and wooden boats could lift themselves into the sky and go visit the gods. But anyhow...

Since a system can be huge (and a sub slow) you could confine events to one system. Or maybe give too little fuel for jumping and set up hypergates as analogies for some way to move quickly to another major body of water. Interestingly, tho, could use "hypering in" for torpedoes, depth charges, ASW aircraft, and other things that "suddenly appear" in the undersea world.

Set in the near (or far) future, and your spobs could be undersea cities and habitats. I like the idea of lots of little ship/fishes flocking around them. Perhaps you have whales and dolphins you can actually open communication with as they flock in and out...

I've had an underwater futuristic-sub TC on my list for a year or two now.

I may or may not ever actually MAKE it, but for now I'm laying my claim...

sigh Now that's two of my TC ideas which have recently been independently brought up on these boards...that's the problem with trying to keep things quiet. 😛

*** Weep lays claim to TC-style combat-arena-including plug

Weepul, you're gonna have one heckuva time with that one. I, personally, would absolutely love to do a submarine plugin for Nova. Hmm. Maybe I can convince BariSaxGuy to do a couple other graphics.... hehehe...
Y'know, Arthur C. Clarke did a great short story about the medium-near future, called The Deep Range. Weep or Legion, you really should read it. Two reasons: 1) it's a great story, and 2) it'll give you a lead on an absolutely astounding storyline. Here's the gist of it, but you still oughta get the book (it's included in his anthology Tales from Planet Earth , published by Ballantine. Sometimes, I think those guys have a monopoly on SF books...).

In the future, humanity was running out of food. Then, we went back to our true home, the home of our ancestor's ancestors: the sea. We designed grids of electric generators (a possible explanation for the edges of the system, and hyperspace) to corral our new cattle, the whales, and prevent the sharks from attacking them. (Obviously, a lot of parallels and analogies will be made to the Old West.) Our faithful companions and comrades-in-arms are the dolphins and porpoises, even more intelligent than the dog, and capable of assisting us in our most desperate battles. However, there are still vast stretches of ocean with no corrals: the sea is a pretty big place, and stationary generators are expensive. And the whale pods sometimes stray into these unprotected territories, or the sharks will slip in when the gates are turned off to let in the whales. This is the job of a proud few, who protect man's source of livelihood and food.

Now, the story followed one guy in an incredibly souped-up minisub (which, from the picture included in the book, looked rather like a very big and very dangerous spearhead with a pair of switchblade knives extending at about a 60° angle forwards from the stern of the ship), who had to protect a pod of whales from a Greenland Shark, a newer, larger, and much nastier variant of shark, not much smaller than a Blue Whale calf.

As to how the plug is set up, the systems could be laid out in a grid, and named according to coordinates (40°W, 15°S), and they could also vary in depth. If they are close to the surface, they would be a pale cyanish-blue color. If they're really deep, they'd be very very dark blue, almost black.

While you're at it, make the sea life realistic. A Lion's-Mane jellyfish can't survive much below the surface, but an Anglerfish can't survive much higher than the seafloor. You might even have the occaisonal lobster or crab shell.

As to mining, there might be a way to rig it so that just having an asteroid scoop would slowly give you cargo. Don't think there is, but it's worth a shot. People have dreamed about processing seawater for minerals for a long time. Of course, one of the most common materials will be salt. There might be some little colony or something that's based in fresh water, where salt will actually be valuable.

I think this could be an alternate-SF story, where space travel never really became practical. Of course, you could discover an alien starcraft on the sea floor... That'd be good.

I could really have fun writing this one, and I've been kind of playing with the idea for a while. Again, I have two problems keeping me from making this plug: 1) I'm already working on the Ages Trilogy, and 2) I'm worthless at graphics.
Oh well. If anybody actually takes this idea, post about it, I'd like to know.

Sorry, but I had to write something useless today, otherwise I would have gone crazy.

At a slight tangent to the subject...I just got done designing sound for our theater's production of "Mr. Roberts" (A WWII navy story), to take a break I watched "Silent Service" a modern sub epic based on the Japanese Manga, and I'm right now "diving" into C.S. Forrester's "Hunting the Bismark" (from the early days of WWII).

If whomever makes progress on that sub TC, I've got a gig of sound files kicking around now, some of them taped on location at historical liberty ship SS Jeremia O'Brian.

Got any that might be good for 18th century naval warfare?

Not at moment. I'm looking for a CD in the BBC collection that was sampled on a clipper under full sail. I've listened to the LP and these are nice sounds indeed and a good place to start. Movies tend to be less than useful as there is always dialogue and music to get around. Foley and re-sampling is often the ticket...I tied a piece of rope to a ladder about two years ago and pulled on it until the knot creaked. I've used that sound, suitably down-sampled and edited, in I don't know how many shows since.

I was thinking about adding this to a plug I'm making, but have it on Haven (The dësc says it has very advanced naval technologies.) You would have to buy a water converter for your engine, or buy a sub, only available there. The only way to get out, was to take a ride to the surface.

Ahem. Well, as I said I have been thinking about a TC like this as well. Yes, Haven should be the setting; the planetary description screams "TC". However, upon being reminded of seeing a kickin' show on Toonami called Blue Submarine #6 (5,7?) in which souped up subs and minisubs fight to protect what little land is left on Earth after a madman melts the ice caps, I see a whole new window opening. The token bad guys: Biological disasters that either pilot robotic spider things or are ships themselves. There was a vast array of weaponry, but you'd have to get creative with the ships, since I only saw about two variety of human subs, a large, nuke packin' fleet ship and a two man minisub simply armed to the teeth with guns and missles. Or simply use this whole post as a base, I don't care. Just do it™.

Besta luck and see you guys around the boards. I'll probably drop by again.

Toonami is evil. Anyway, Blue Submarine #6 was a pretty good show, and possibly good for a submarine plug. The CGI didn't really totally fit, but they did have good designs. You have Blue Submarine #6 which was the "hero" sub, and there were several other Blue Submarine #x. The subs got more advanced as the numbers grew, and they also had a modified nuclear missile boat (a Typhoon, if I remember correctly). There were pirate modified warships plus mutated biologics for enemies. It might be a good show for you to check out, Legion.

Something interesting in a Naval TC (or at least a modernish one): Fighters. They could have really good speed and acceleration and be inertialess. And because they don't care about hitting islands or whirlpools or whatever, they could be immune to deadly stellars. One problem with the idea of a Naval TC is that because the ships actually exist, you will pretty much have to make one shot kill them. In EVN, a ship surviving a nuke (EMP) is reasonable because we have no idea how advanced the armor is. But if you do a more current one, or one like Mantaray's 'Caribbean,' you run into the wall of solid fact.

------------------
Why are you all looking at me like that?

Well, if you're going to do a submarine thingy set in the future. Why not make it SeaQuest TC? Already you have various factions like the UEO, the Confederation, even Macronesia.

And I'm sure there's plenty of various crafts in SeaQuest.
