Wow, I don't even use the stuff but their upgrade sounds impressive. It seems that new metaball thing will open up new options for people wanting to make ships easier in Bryce.

That upgrade sounds sweet! Blurred reflections (YES!! Finally!), soft shadows (no more 25-radial-light fakes that eat render time :D), and a tree lab! Woohoo, actually Bryce scenes with foliage! Yeah, I'm right now in the middle of a scene with old-Bryce trees and my own volumetric foliage. Not bad, but could be better... Metaballs are kind of, well, probably useless for many things, unless you want to make something blobby. Could be used for surreal underground tunnels, perhaps.
Hmm, $159 for an upgrade...worth it? I think, probably.

metaball is a tool you find in all good modelers, it allows you to 'melt' two spherical type polygons into one shape. It is useful for modelling organic objects, such as the human body.
Note: unlike a coventional 'group tool', the metaball tools also deforms the spheres structures so the result looks truly like on and only shape...

SWEEET!!! I always wanted that!
Hmm... looks like it will be an improvement for those who use Bryce as it was meant to be used - a product for creation of landscapes and nature scenes. As I see it, these changes don't especially help it to branch out at all. Metaballs and soft reflection might be useful for other types of image, but I'm disappointed not to see any improvements for generalized modelling (loft, extrude, sweep, anyone?) or animation (better paths, linking hierarchy, that sort of thing.)
I guess I'm still gonna buy myself A:M or C4DXL...
I jsut came here to start that topic. It's out for those of you in doubt. I want it, but, i've never tried bryce (any of them) before. I wish they had a good demo. while i'm at it, i wish i had money.

yeah, maybe they didn't mention that they included some modelling stuff. Well. I have infini-d and strata to do that, and there is always the import button...

I find Bryce to be a lot of fun, but object positioning kind of sucks. If you plan on making some serious 3D graphics it's good to have a copy of an all-around 3D program. From about the same era as my copy of Bryce 3D I have Ray Dream Studio 4 since my dad used to get part of his salary in software, but those days are gone and I doubt I'll ever be upgrading unless I can find some superior program for some kind of price within my budget.

I'm thinking about upgrading. First I have to upgrade my whole hardware and OS, probably. I was hoping they put particle systems in ver.5. It's very dissapointing they didn't. But those blured reflections and soft shadows sounds cool. You wouldn't have now to stick 100+ radials in your sceene to get those soft shadows, I guess.

3 Sphere's and I can make you a VERY cartoony human-like base for the face. 3 Sphere's and you got a shoulder, muscle, elbow. 3/4/5 Sphere's and you got a torso.
Metaballs are easy to work with and very fast. The coolest thing is making a hand form out of a liquid (metaballs), rising from the floor T-1000 style. Maybe I'll post that animation sometime...

Incase any of yall dont want to purchase bryce 5, my friend told me that academic pricing on it is $89, not sure if that is better than the upgrade price, or if you have to do anything strange to get it. But if any of yall are students or have kids/siblings that are, yall might want to check this out. Be forewarned however, sometimes these versions make you jump through many hoops to get them to function properly. I for one am not going to try to get someone else to buy it for me, i am just gona upgrade. I think it may save some trouble. But for all students $89, not bad for a $300 program. I think this may also extend to teachers, but i am not sure.
