I'm just wondering If anybody besiedes myself thinks there should be a conversion of nova to EVO. I just recently upgraded to a G3 so I was able to give nova a spin. but I have been restricted to EV/O for a long time. I think Its unfair that people without fast computers can"t play nova.
(such a conversion would not be complete because the nova engine Is far more capeble but It would give people a little taste.)
------------------ EDIT-sorry about the spelling In the subject.

I seriously doubt anyone has enough free time or inclination to undergo that project.
Anyways, it would be a bad idea. Everything would look worse, and the game wouldn't be complete without all the factions (which probably wouldn't fit into the EVO scenario). And besides, people with slow computers who want to use their computers to play games should upgrade. The system requirements aren't that demanding, and if you have an older computer, chances are that you probably didn't mean to use it for games in the first place.

Reasons it wouldn't work:
1. Graphics would look like total crap.
2. Ships wouldn't behave properly (Manticore wouldn't spin, Asteroid Miner wouldn't mine).
3. Weapons wouldn't behave properly (the Polaris multi-torp, for example).
4. Missions wouldn't work (EVN's missions are far too complex for EVO).
5. EVN has more data than EVO could handle.
As far as giving people a little taste, thats what shareware is all about. If someone can't run EVN, giving them a taste of what they can't use is just going to annoy them.

Anyway, how many people seriously still use a 68k as their primary computer nowadays? I've run NOVA on a 100MHz 601 processor. Ok, I had the system a bit more refined than most would run it and there were certain options turned off (parallax starfield, etc), but it ran fine. It got a bit jumpy when there were large battles, but for normal play it ran perfectly I mean pipeline said he ran development version of NOVA on a 68k (and I think you can run NOVA on a 68k system if you were so inclined, but dont quote me on that - cant remember whether that feature was removed)

I should have known nobody would like that Idea. Instead of a TC lets make It more reasonable.
how about a plug that adds a couple of ships like the Starbridge, Mod Starbridge and Valk to EVO? Those three are my favorites and probobly the favorites of many.
Maybe the blasters too?

Yeah, that's much more reasonable.
That would be easy enough to do, although they still wouldn't quite match with the rest of the EVO ships (but they wouldn't clash as much as, say, a Polaris Raven). Wasn't there a plugin that added the Manticore to EV or EVO?

If there Is I want It. I could really do well In a manticore.

Ironically, I heard that Nova has it's roots as an extensive TC designed for EVO. It was so ambitious that Ambrosia eventually took notice, and formed a partnership with ATMOS to develop it into a full-fledged sequel ("trequel?").
All betas of the original TC were copyrighted, and prohibitted from public release excepting for nostalgic purposes as deemed acceptable by ATMOS...Or so I've heard...
Maybe I'm wrong? shrug

I doubt If thats true. where did you hear about It?
by the way, If I want to add a nova ship to EVO. In which of the nova data files can I find the ship spins?

Dont. pipeline himself reminded others how it was first a TC. As you already know, pipeline was one of the ATMOS members...

No ship spïn in Nova. the engine uses shän for ships. You'll have to make the spïns yourself :p.

You need the DeRLE utility, which is part of the NovaTools suite -- see the link in my sig. Use the main NovaTools program to find which of the Nova files has the graphic and shan for the ship you want (hint: check the files with "Ships" in their names :D), note the IDs of the shans, and then follow DeRLE's directions. It outputs the same sort of spinning-ship graphics (in a big grid, usually 6 X 6) that EV and EVO use. If DeRLE doesn't auto-generate a spin for you (I can't remember whether it does), it's easy enough to make your own. You don't need much info beyond the height & width of the sprite in pixels, which you can read from the original shan if necessary.
I might have forgotten a couple details, but the documentation for DeRLE is decent....

Not sure what you mean by that.... If you are still having trouble, you might get better help if you could be clearer.

Ok. when I drag Nova ships 1 onto the Derle app Its says It could not open the Derle because <<Derle>> could not be found.
Is that better?
On my computer DeRLE doesn't accept dragged files -- I don't know why, but it doesn't. Try opening DeRLE by double-clicking on it and then choosing "Process Files" from the File menu to get Nova Ships 1.
If that works you may want to have a specific shan in mind to enter in the "Rng" boxes in DeRLE's dialog box the first time you use it -- depending on the speed of your computer, I think you might have an annoyingly long wait if you tell it to process every shan in Nova Ships 1.

I just tried opening DeRLE first and It still said it could find <<DeRLE>>.
could I be having a memory problem.

You meant the actual images of the ships spinning? My bad. They are stored as PICT ressources in EV(O), but most of the time as compressed ressources, called RLEs, in the Nova files, meaning you must indeed use deRLE to extract them.
