Project Ares: Override

In Ares, Flak drones are indestructable defenses that fire a terrifying amount of ordinace
at hostile enemies (that means you). They have unlimited amounts of ammo, but they cannot move and can be captured by ships called Engineering pods. The best strategy is to never get within range of the guns or missles and destroy any enemy defense ships while your vulnerable Engineering pods makes its journey. My guess is that in A:O "battlestations" will serve the same purpose, pouring prodigous amounts of hunter missles into unsuspecting Voinians that venture too close. πŸ˜„

Why are you asking these questions? Why, why, WHY?!

Sure, we could have a variety of flak drones for particular races. We'll wait and see how that works out. Another idea we've had is giving the stations their own fighter defense force.

Smart: Yeah, you have a love for questions man. πŸ˜‰ If everything at the forums was meant to be questioned, it'd be a nightmare. But I suppose you're now going to ask me why I told you this. πŸ˜›

I think when saying "Battlestations" Captain Skyblade was referring to a capturable station that will be able to defend itself. Flak drones are as ProtoformX stated nearly invincible objects that have huge amounts of firepower and can only be safely approached and captured by certain ships.

How are you going to implement all the different races in Override? There seem to be more species in Override than Ares.

Well, let's see...there's the human-type people whose name I forget, the Gaitori, the Cantharans, the Obish dudes, that other super-powerful people whose name I forget...that's at least every major government but Miranu, and I think there's one more race, but I'm not sure. :

Take a line from any Star Wars movie. Replace certain words with 'spank':
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Spank."
"Queen Amidala is young and naive; you will find spanking her not too difficult." "And what of the Jedi?" "She should never have brought them into this. Spank them immediately."

Well first Ares can support up to 17 races at once so theres no problem there. Secondly I've "taken over" the race slots that were Ares races and changed them to Override races. For instance the actual slot that used to be the Ishiman is now the UE. But Ares is very customizable and lets you rename the races too.

That's what I mean. Are you going to just substitute Ares races for Override ones? 'Cause it would seem to me that unless there are the exact same number of races some would have to be thown out. Is it going to be something like:

Ishiman=UE
Human=emalgha
Cantharan=Voinian
Eleejitan=Azgdari
Gatori=renegade
Salirians=Zidagar
Audemon=Izgdara
? =miranu
? =zachit
? =alien renegades

It just doesn't seem like there are enough

(sorry if I spelled some races wrong it's been a while since I played Ares)

You skiped the firstly part.

Me:
Well first Ares can support up to 17 races at once so theres no problem there.

Originally the Ishiman filled race slot 100 now the UE fills that, Cantharan were slot 200 now Voinian is slot 200, The Gatori were slot 300 now it is the Renegades, 400 was Obish and is now the Zidagar, 600 was Salrilian and is now Azdgari, 700 was Audemedon and now is Igadzra, 800 was Elejeetian and is now Miranu/Zachit (These two may or may not be the same in the future), 900 was Human and is now the Emalgha.

With all those races that still leaves us with slots 500, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700 not filled with any races what so ever.

Don't forget the NT and ST Renegades. And the Council. ANd hinwar

Ok I see now. I was worried you'd have to change the single player missions to squeeze someone in.

Since reading about this, I've just started to get into Ares, and I've noticed a few things. It feels quite like an EV game in combat, but the ships are noticably more "fragile", as in nothing can take an extended amount of damage without blowing up. So will this plug have Ares style, relativly short-lived ships, or will it be like EV:O in that respect, as in capital ships can take perhaps even several minutes of direct fire before exploding? Or a mid-point between the two?

We are striving to make all the ships and their weapons as close to their respective counterparts in EV:O as possible. That said there are of course differences in the Ares A.I. from EV:O which make battles slightly different, that and the fact that players will have control of not only their ship but of the fleets they build will make it likely you'll see numbers and combinations of battling ships that aren't commonly seen in EV:O. Oh, and in case you were wondering we did make it so ships pass over each other ala EV instead of the colliding and bouncing that happens in the standard Ares scenerio. Hope that answers you question πŸ™‚

I have more questions now ;). What differences has Ares in AI? What kind of combinations are you thinking of? And why do the ships collide and bounce? I see this as a flaw and think passing over others is more logical.

Well in Ares neither you or the computer controled ships have "control" over their fighters. That is, once you launch a fighter you can't tell it to dock or hold positon. In Ares fighters launched from a ship act most like EVN fighters set to defenseive mode, they'll attack any hostile that gets close and come back to "formation" when you either get to far away or they destroy the hostiles. Another AI difference is the ships in Ares tend to like to stop right over the enemy they are fighting which is a bit different from EV in where the ships tend to stay moving while fighting. Thats not to say that all the Ares ships are going to fight standing still, but every once in a while you'll see a fighter get behind a slow moving ship and stop within weapons range until it feels threatend by that ship.

Yep, but in our testing we have found that the Emalgha just like every other race should not be underestimated as a fighting force.

Whew, thanks for taking care of questions during my absence Ragashingo - coming home after being out of town for two days makes a long topic of questions overwhelming. πŸ˜›

Just to add a few points, the North Tip, South Tip and Strandless will be combined. They're nearly identical in their roles and tech and I see no reason why they should be divided into seperate categories. I was also originally thinking about joining the Miranu and Zachit (as Ragashingo had suggested) into one government, but I think I'll give them seperate government slots in the end complete with perhaps a few extra ships. We'll wait and see.

Also, it looks like I'll be back to work with the AO graphics within a few days (although perhaps not at as rapid of a pace as before). Running Infini-D on a minature monitor is very annoying and time-consuming, and a G3 processor almost doubles render time. Ack.
