EV 3D!!!

ok, no i'm not some stupid nubie (notice didn't include multiplayer)

This is an actual idea for a plugin that you could create in EVN, or even EVO or EV that would create 3d ships. It would be a very neat gimmick and make your plugin the most advanced anywhere.

You remember the old 3d movies with the red/green or red/blue or blue/green glasses that would make it 3d. Well, make a plugin with ships and weapons and everything rendered to provide pop-out effects. So you'd hear a collective moan, it would still be neat if you could figure out how to make a your 3d program do it.

It's actually a fairly easy trick - you just take (or, in this case, render) two pictures, one slightly to the right of the other, and then put one on the red channel and one on the blue channel. Check out (url="http://"http://davidarthur.evula.net/showpic.php?image=beta/garden3d.jpg&width;=333&height;=480&title;=Garden+(3-D+Glasses+Required)")this sample(/url). I don't know how effective it would be for Escape Velocity, though; the pictures are pretty small, and I doubt you'd get significant depth perception.

Great idea, cept for one thing. Where would you get the glasses to make it 3d?

There are places you can order them online. I just looked on Google, here's one:

I wouldn't be surprised if there were 3D programs (or plug-ins) with this capability, but I'm not familiar with any.

What you basically do is put blue celophane over your right eye, and red celophane over your left eye, and viola. The only thing is that they can give you a headache if you do it too long.

That's a nifty idea. One thing that bugged me about 3D images is that you lose most of your color, so everything turns purple and blue and red.

That is actually fairly easy to do. I think Strata actually has an option to do this built in... Will look into it.

Thats probably the most novel idea I've ever heard for a 3d EV. I love it! But like David Arthur, said, It might not work because the pictures in EV are to small, and from what I can remember from my childhood, all the 3d books I used to look at had big pictures in. It would be interesting to try though, Im sure I've got a pair of those glasses floating around somewhere!

The simple answer would be to make larger ships. I know that larger graphics means a larger file, but I think that it'd be worth it.

Actually, I have seen this done with some color - you can get any combination of (apparent) white, green, blue, and black. Instead of making one image red, and the other blue, you make one image red and the other blue & green. The only problem is that you need a really good red filter for viewing, otherwise the stuff in green will show up through the red filter, albeit really dimly. Unfortunately, I have no idea where such a red filter can be found - colored cellophane just isn't good enough. Maybe multiple layers of colored cellophane?

The game that I've seen this in was called Glimmer.

Basically an interesting idea. I read this topic and tried to make something like that, but it didn't create 3D ships, it simply let the ships hover above the screen. The problem is that you need to vary the distance between the red and the blue image, the farther they are away from each other, the closer they are to the viewer (I guess it is this way, right?). If you want to make a sphere, for instance, it would only produce a circle, howevering above the screen. This is the problem. I have a 3D comic at home. Same thing, looks only as if the different characters are cut out of the paper and put one or two centimeters away. They still look flat.

Heh. I think I have some of those glasses somewhere. If somebody can pull this off for a TC (including all the interface elements), I'll give them a karma point, heck, I'll give them three. It has to be good though, and actually stand out as 3D.

Yes, that's what I did with the sample picture I linked to above. I first tried it without a green channel, but that made the image look weird when viewed without the glasses, and weaker with the glasses.

What you've got to do is take two separate pictures. If you just use two copies of the same one, you'll get ships hovering above the screen as you described. With two separate pictures - actually moving the camera (or your 3-D program's virtual camera) in between - you'll get depth within the picture.

It has to be a real TC, story and everything, not just a little plug. It's just like any other TC plug you'd get, and it just so happens to be in "3D".

I don't know about this...
Sure you could fasion your own pair of 3D glasses pretty easily (they are just the white ones with one red eye and one green eye made from cardboard?), but really, It sounds like alot of extra work for a pretty cheesy eighties style effect.

It may appeal to some though (and obviously does)
