1.0.2 :)

All these modifications are great but think about the people with old machines (like me) if you put all the rotating stuff, the smoke trails and all the movies some people won't be able play or have fun with EVO because it will be too slow. So I suggest you to add in the pref. menu the possibility to turn off some options: like sound, animation and all those execive stuff.

Negative priced outfits would be cool too, or some other way to take out a loan. Or perhaps put a down payment on a ship, then you pay a daily fee to lease it until it is paid off. If you run out of cash and can't make a payment, bounty hunters come daily to re-posses it.

This is re. the whole guns turrets business, not sure where it'll turn up in this huge thread though.

It all goes back to good old EV, me flying around in a lovely little Kestrel (EVO at this point just a handful of systems and an A4's worth of ideas), with maxed-out photon cannons and turrets. With a reasonably manoeuvrable ship you could always apply more firepower than the AI could hope to return (and I've always felt sorry for the AI, battered by Monty Pythoners and even more ruthlessly brutal humans), and dodging all secondary weapons is fairly easy. So with one Kestrel suitably outfitted you could take out about 3, 4, 5 AI Kestrels before having to retreat and recharge for a while (anyone else remember the biggest mission-battle in EV with the Pirate fleet of ~10 Kestrels?).

Anyway, part of putting a stop to this was limiting turret slots - so the Igazra and UE Cruiser have 5 turrets each, and have five turret slots each. The main problem was that players could always use the gun slots in addition to the turret slots, whereas the AI can only ever fire one primary weapon (IIRC). The obvious thing therefore was to stop players from cramming both guns and turrets in. So just my petty play-balancing at work I'm afraid. Not a question of realism but gameplay - but then there's not very much that's realistic to be found in EVO in general so at least I'm consistent :).

In general, I'm not quite sure how this new EVO upgrade will affect gameplay. Once the app. is complete, I'll have a short while to update the data files so as to implement all the new features. But I won't be able to play and replay the missions the same ridiculous number of times I originally did - what I mean is, some missions/situations could become easier or harder, some ships far more or less formidable, purely without intention on my part. All this stems from the problem of communication and co-ordination between me and Matt. I have a few ideas, like lowering the shield values for fighters if they're simply too lethal, but the new version could be a very dangerous and frightening beast for the unwary, and even those who consider themselves experienced.

Peter Cartwright.

When's the approximate release date in terms of months/weeks?

Wholly S**t! This is great new stuff! I guess i'll have to wait for the release until I to finish my ST plug. Many of those new additions will be awesome.

Make a ramming feature, no scrap that that would suck. Maybe pulsing weapons, you know that go out from you in concentric circles, to knock back fighters or something. Oh and Matt, keep up the good work, you rule.

Sounds cool, someone will have to work on the EVO Bible though.

The Bible is being edited as modifications are made, so that when 1.0.2 is released, a modified bible will be ready.

If Matt is still looking for suggestions, it would be very powerful if there could be were and, and not, or, etc fields in mission bits. Think of the compleity which could be generated in threads!

Two simple modifications would be great - text formatting in mission dialogs (ie bold , italics , etc), and bigger mission dialog boxes.

This is easy. Just change the ditl/dlog resources. This was done nicely in Pale, for example.

Most likely everyone's sick and tired of reading this string, but I have to put in my two cents. Whenever I've got frigates or warships or whatever on my tail, I see all these neutral ships. I try communicating with them, but I'm given only three things to say: "Greetings" which doesn't get me anywhere, "End Transmission" which closes the window, and finally "Request Assistance". The only assistance I can ever get is in fuel, or "I don't think I want to". They never want to! How about the ability to hire a trader in the system to fight your attacker? It would add a more personal, rather than computer-generated, feel to the game.

Occasaionally they will agree to assist, it seems to depend on their AI and your legal status.

what factors determine this? I've never before seen it happen and would like to.
What AI will participate? anybody know?

I have only seen (and requested) it rarely, so I never did a systematic study.

Max and I once wrote up a list of things we would like to see in updates of EV(O). Since it seemed unlikely to ever happen we lost it. I have been posting here whenever I remember an item from the list. Here are more:

  • Lots more dudes. There are plenty of planets and systems, but more dudes would help a lot. More outfits and ships would be nice, but not so critical.

  • It would be great if an outfit could have a secondary effect. For example, a weapon could reduce your total speed, more shielding could increase the distance from the system center to jump, etc.

  • More turning modes, say instead of 0-6 use 0-60

  • This is cosmetic only and totally unimportant, but it would be cool if a specific color or mask layer could be randomized. E.g if a section of a ship is say FFCCFF (just to be specific) each time that a non-player version of that ship is displayed is is a different color (from a look-up table). This would give the feeling of variation without killing ship slots. On the road not every car of the same model is the same color, why should it be in space?

It would be cool if you could change the paint job on your ship.

And of course there is the single simplest and most wanted feature in EVO - 128 ship and weapon resources instead of just 64.

I play as a trader who tries to avoid getting involved n conflicts. Whe I was first starting out, I got a fuel assist from a Voinian (I think it was a supply ship), and recently I got an assist from a trader (but I can't remember who)--so it does happen.

PS--What I'd like to know is if the old plug-ins will work with 1.0.2 as they are, or will they need modifications (which I don't know how to do).

you will give you fuel - I've never met a ship that helped me in combat.

Yes, old plugins will work. All the new add-ons that mattb has been putting in take the form of added flag values (which were simply not recognised before), or take up slots that were previously 'unused'. Old plugs (providing the maker of that plug didn't decide to put a value into their flags that at the time was nonsensical and useless) will work. At least, thus far I haven't come across a plug that didn't (mind you I've only tried a couple).
