Argosy is probably the most versatile and isn't that expensive. Corvette when you can afford it, really fast. The Kestrel is great too, but expensive of course.
Cham
ok thanks ill see how an argosy goes for a while
I personally like the Rapier. The Lightning will fall apart in pits and pieces after a couple of torpedoes. The Rapier offers the firepower of a Corvette, but the maneuverability of a fighter.

I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't fond of the good 'ol Rapier, but the fact of the matter is, the Corvette is simply better. Yes, the Rapier has certain advantages over the Corvette, but they're rather off-set by its limitations.
As far as fighters go, the description is apt in saying that its rather clumsy. More maneuverable and smaller than the Corvette, yes, but only by a small margin. The Corvette has a larger cargo bay, more weapon hard-points, and vastly greater expansion space (and believe me, you'll be sorely missing those heavy defense upgrades when trying to outrun torpedoes in a Rapier).
The Rapier makes for a passable stepping-stone to the Corvette, being a slightly cheaper alternative, and they make for good escorts (in the hands of the AI, stock Rapiers beat stock Corvettes most of the time), but I wouldn't recommend it over the Corvette as your own personal ship.
But, yes, it is better than the Lightning, at least when it comes down to attacking "large" ships.
If you have time to get the money, get a fleet of kestrels. Upgrade yours with all the performance upgrades you can, armor, shields, and what not, get as much free mass as possible, then as many of the blue turrets as possible, then the red guns. The red guns are powerful with a short range, while the blue are weaker, faster, and have a longer range. If you want something stronger, go after the largest confed ship. The cruiser? Get enough of those, and you have a fleet to be reckoned with. If you want a civvie ship though, I'd to with a kestrel fleet. You have tons of fighters too so that can help. Oh yeah, buy the other fighter bays as well.
I think it very much depends whether you're playing classic EV, or using the EV total conversion in the EV:O game engine. I preferred the latter, back in the day... because gun turrets in the later versions of EV:O target much better. In EV, as I recall, forward-facing weapons were much, much more effective than turrets. This made it much more of a fighter-focused game. (That and the fact that some fighters were given relatively large numbers of weapon hardpoints.)
That said, I always liked the Argosy, with which I could handle AI Corvettes... and pretty soon capture one. I didn't really bother with anything else after that, just lots of upgrades.
Corvette with proton turrets and the monty python maneuver. Kestrel is sort of a downgrade. Speed can get you through anything.

blasphemy
I always liked the fighters. Anyways, I have not played EVC for a long time, but I always loved using fighters.. The monty Python manuever is strange. Anyways, I think a clipper with some good weapons will do you good. Upgrade those javelins, and whatever. You've got a hell of an annoying ship. Naw, don't listen to me, I haven't played for a long time.
