Say I disable a ship, board it, yoink all its goodies, and the thing blows up in the process. Does that count as a kill, or is it not helping my combat rating at all?
Oh, and do kills by my escorts count as well?
You know, it's funny, this game was awesome when I was a kid, and even against EVN, it's still totally awesome.

I'm pretty sure that self-destructing does NOT count as a kill. Annoying, yes.
Kills by your escorts do, though.
I'm pretty sure that as soon as you board a ship, you lose all chance of getting a kill for it. So even if you loot it and then leave the ship and then blow it up yourself, you don't get the kill.

Hmmm. I think I have to disagree with you guys.
Before I join a faction I build a base pilot, and build credits primarily from disabling and looting pirate ships. This boosts my combat rating. I don't take assasination jobs or anything like that, and I don't take out opposing faction ships, because I haven't yet joined a side. How else would my combat rating go up?

Are you talking about Nova? I'm talking about the original EV here.
Classic EV. (I still play it; I'm trying to play through every (decent) plug created for it). All I'm doing is looting pirates, and my combat rating goes up.
I think the minute you disable a ship, you've won the battle, which means your combat rating would go up. So even if you board it, your combat rating would probably still go up.
Yeah that sounds right.
