Bah, it's too clumsy. A good pilot in pretty much any other ship can take it out. The only good thing going for it is the four patrol ships, but those are slow to launch and easy to kill or avoid.

The Courier is the best courier
The Rapier SUCKS!! The Lightning is the best fast and powerful.
A beefed up Rebel Cruiser is the best. It need the engine, thrust, and RCS upgrade.

The Argosy is probably my most used ship in EV. It's a great money-maker for trading, missions, or piracy. I've been known to skip the Corvette entirely and jump straight to the Kestrel.

The courier is pretty cool, but the price aint.
The rebel cruiser is also cool, not my favorite though.
The Rapier is niether the best ship in the game, nor the worst. The Rapier retains both the manuverability to beat anything slower, and the firepower to beat anything faster. I tried out the Lightning and found that 60 percent of the time the pirate killed me first.
The Argosy is practically a warship, but once you replace it with a nice R Destroyer, you can call it outdated.

Fighter: Definitely Rapier. Good, solid punch, and that tail cannon is fun to use. Just watch where your nose is pointed.
Warship: Corvette. Destroyers and Cruisers are fun, but when you're in a hurry, well, doggone it, you're in a hurry. No 3 day jumps for me!
