Are Ambrosia going to bother carbonzing Escape Velocity?, They should as EV is such a good game and Mac OS X users deserve to be able to play it withoutusing Classic environment (like myself).

What is wrong with using classic? The only problems I have with classic enviroment is that several games I like to play don't run correct and a few don't run at all. But EV works fine in classic, so why should Ambrosia update it?

They will port ev and EVO to OSX when the Nova port for windows is done. It will be free but you have to pay for Nova(if you havent allready.)

Close enough. EV/EVO will be converted into plugins, which you can only play in Nova if you are registered. Nova is Carbonized, so in effect you will have EV/EVO for X-with Nova's cool features and smart AIs.

not exactly. Won't the ports be different from standard plug-ins, as you'll be able to use EV/O plugins with the ports as well?

There is no way to make Nova use old EV/O plugs, no matter how the port plugs are made. The old Plugs need to be remade like the old EV/O data for the ports.

er. duh!..What do you mean?..Whats wrong with the Classic Environment?
Everything almost. Photoshop 6 runs a bit jurky and slow in it and Classic environment never redraws doucment windows in it correctly. QuarkXPress 4 gets totally messed up in it for no apparent reason. Most of my games run horrible in it, and Bryce version 2 runs awful in Classic Environment as when you show a dialog in it when you close the dialog the area where it was is just white as Classic Environment never redraws correctly!
I havnt tried running EV in Classic Environment but imagine that it runs really bad.
If the ports are done right, the port data will be stored in Nova Files, leaving the plug-ins folder empty, so you can update old plug-ins as well to go in the plug-ins folder.
The advantage to this is pretty clear, if you simply make the EV/EVO files as plugs for Nova, they would have to overwrite every single resouce in Nova to prevent any overlap (If there's overlap weird things happen, like weird fleets of Nova ships could appear arround Palshife for instance).
Also, lets keep this topic on topic, and not get into pointless debates about which is better or being surprised that somebody got something right...

Mmmm, that's not exactly true. If they were plug-ins, you couldn't used converted plugs with them

Will Port-Authority be able to handle such conversions? I havn't heard much about it for a while. I'm not exactly looking forward to doing a manual conversion of New Republic to Nova. That would be too painful, even for a massochist like myself.

But seriously, I didn't know that they were going to be data files. I just assumed plugins.

Oops-- I'm very new about karma (despite about being around the boards for a while). Sorry everybody. Hey, looking back, that was very annoying and in poor taste. Back on topic: EV will be converted to run in the Nova engine, and the final port will replace the Nova data files, allowing you to use the plugin folder with EV plugins (after you convert them to a Nova format). That is what I gathered-- am I still wrong? ------------------ They say that if you play a Windows Install CD backwords, you hear satanic messages. As soon as I get my model '95 Power Mac back from my grandfather when he dies (soon I suspect) I'll be happy as hell. It would be very interesting to see Ambrosia bring games to other platforms, and God forbid I say it.............. PC aww son of a...but that is what I am stuck with for now :frown:

Thats good, so you can finally get to play Ambrosia games again. It cant play the newest games though, like Nova. It needs a G3, so you can either buy a new Mac or wait for the PC port to be finished. Or you can use Basilisk II, provided that you buy OS 8 somewhere, update it to 8.1, and get gamma ramping patch. 8.1 because Nova reguires it. Then you can run Nova with success, it only becomes slow in carrier combats. Oh, and you need QuickTime 3.0 or newer. I dont know which QuickTime versions work on OS 8. I guess its QuickTime 4.

Sounds good but my old Power Mac only has a 500 meg hard disk. I'd have to hook it up to our server but even then I don't thin our router is compatible with it. I would have to get some VMware and install a virtual operating system on top of WIN XP on my computer. Then I'd buy NOVA.
500mb?!?, are you in the PC world?, heh heh. only joking, my old mac only had a 700mb HD. At least i have Gigabytes on my iMac.

Well with my windows machine I'll be able to give my Mac OS more space than what it could use. Hopefully that will come in handy for when I need to convert HD space for RAM
