I recently (uhh, 2 or 3 days ago) came back to EV, and now I'm flying a Lightning (is it a good ship anyways?)..
I'm not exactly sure what should I slap in that beast...
Currently, I have
4 Laser Cannons 1 Proton Bolt Cannon 1 Missile Rack & max of 40 missiles 1 Javelin Pod Armaplast Ramscoop 1 External Fuel Pod
So, I still have the turret slot open.. What should I remove/replace, with what?
And anywhere else I can get a Proton Turret that Earth? I happed to be a Criminal there
------------------ It's funny until someone gets hurt. Then it's hilarious.
There is a thread called Proton Turret Locations. I cant remember the exact date, so I cant give you a link. Anyways, theyre avaible in Pirate planets atleast.
------------------ I am eager to try to ansver mission questions
Hmm.. I dished the Lasers, and bought Proton Bolt Cannons..
Then if I toss away the Armaplast and Javelin Pod, I'll be able to fit a Laser Turret and 20 missiles in it.
I'll do that, once I find a place where a Laser Turret is sold (Satori maybe...).
You could get the Aurora plug-in and go neutronic. It's FUN!
------------------ Destroyer E is the name of my ship and the name has a good meaning.
The lightning is a great ship. Let us first assume you don't want to use any plug-ins. Your configuration is good, however I would do the following:
I would keep the primary configuration you have. Lasers are great for Monty Pythoning, throw in the proton to fill out the primaries. This should leave you with 70 tons to play with. The way you will run down enemies is by using your high recharge to your advantage, so add a shield booster (2 tons). Add the three engine upgrades and two detector upgrades. For defenses add a missile jammer, flares (1 ton), afterburner (5), and thus a ramscoop (5). Now you have 57 tons left.
Depending on what you want to do, you could add a turret (20 or 30 tons) and armor (5, 10, and/or 40 tons) to maximize your frontal assaults or put in 1 torpedo launcher (25) and fill up on torps and durasteel or armaplast.
Alternatively, you could put in a Hawk Bay. Normally , these are useless, however if you continuously launch, target, and recall them without ever letting the fighters engage you have an unlimited supply of free missiles. This is 50 tons--the same as you are using on missiles now.
The point of whether a fighter should have a fighter bay is an entirely different one.

game bug: proton cannons do less damage per second than laser cannons (although proton turrets do more than laser turrets). 1 turret is a waste of space, especially on a fast ship because the shots don't keep ahead of you like cannon shots. Personally I'd keep the four laser cannons and the armaplast (the lightning is about as tough as a peice of paper, you'll need the extra armour). Get rid of the ramscoop and fuel pod to create an exra 10 tons(if you run out of fuel just be a pirate ;)) and then buy a second javelin pod (those things are brilliant for close combat fighting. Coupled with the laser cannons you can take down an Argosy in about 5 seconds) Drop the proton cannon and two missiles and buy an extra missile rack. And buy every weightless upgrade avaidable (especially the engine upgrades and the missile jammer, unless you like being toast. You might want to sell 20 missiles and buy a Durasteel upgrade, since it adds 30 (or is it 20?) units of armour.)
Alternatively you could ditch the lightning, buy a defender (you'll need the speed to run from pirates ;)), hire 6 light freighters and trade until you can afford a Kestrel

I prefer the Rapier as my fighter. Mine is kitted out:
4 laser cannons: I was a warship guy for a long time, and was surprised how effective these little things are. 1 torpedo launcher: Whatever ship you're in, these are the long range weapons to get IMHO. 28 torpedoes: a stock big enough to kill multiple enemies from afar if need be. 1 fuel tank, ramscoup: you'll see why in a moment Particle Beam: Thats why. You can just fry squadrons of enemy fighters at a time with this thing, and severely damage larger ships as well. Engine Upgrades: Hey, their weightless, and effective. The supposedly slow Rapier can outperform AI Defenders with these. Tritanium: Its heavy, but my Rapier now has the same combined defenses as a Corvette. Shield Booster: And a much higher regeneration rate than a 'Vette ;).
Basically a half-decent pilot can waste anything in a ship kitted out like mine, and the basic Rapier only costs slightly more than the Lightning, plus it has enough cargo space to do important missions.

As far as I'm concerned the only ship in the game is the Rebel Destroyer.

Yeah, ive heard how much it increases the regeneration rate of small ships.
I know this won't be an accomplishment like doing in in a shuttle or defender, but I'm on the way to the Alien mission now in my Rapier. I'm getting a bit nervous about the whole matter... I mean, I dominated a couple planets, then the Bounty Hunter gave me a difficult fight. I ended up taking down the Lightnings with my lasers, then fleeing to the far corner of the system till my fuel recharged to 100%. Then I came back, "parked" in front of the Kestrel, and let loose with the Particle Beam. By the time I was out of gas it was disabled . But an Alien Cruiser has about 10x as much shielding as a Kestrel...
In my opinion, the Cruiser itself isn't too tough..
It's the fighters
I stayed behind it in my 'Vette and just let the turrets sing...
The Rebel Cruiser I had there, I guess it just randomly appeared there, kept the fighters busy..

I forgot how to get the particle beam through missions... is it even possible? I remember the mission bits being obscure. Maybe I'm hallucinating.

A Confed mission, I think.
With the Rebels you get the Cloaking device.
But maybe with a "Steal blueprints" mission you can get them both. Can't remember.
Ok, I've got now 5 Proton Cannons, 20 Missiles, ~300 Javelin Rockets, Shield Booster (the one that adds regeneration) and all the speed upgrades..
500 speed and 120 degrees turning! Not bad, not bad...

You can get it from the Rebel Pursuit string. You get it after last mission, Rebel Pursuit 4. Thats good! Submit it Pilot File Trade Network at pftn.evula.net. You will make Flatulence happy for submitting a new pilot (the site is a collection of them), and you will make me (and others who want to try it) happy for getting kick butt modification of a heavy fighter. But why no Torpedos anymore? Dont you want to stand up against Kestrels and government ships?
Submit 'em, eh?
Might try...
(edit) I wasn't able to get it out of Basilisk... It showed up as a file of 0 kbs in windows... But it's easy to do, it took me about 5 hours and a few million credits.
