What ship would you chose for fighting and for trading?

Even though i have tried the Reb Cruiser, i still like the lighting. Its fast enough to dodge attacks.
For Trading, i ve always like the scoutship.

IM JUST A FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION

If you want to be able to dodge attacks well, go for the Rebel Destroyer when fighting. It's almost as manuverable as the Lightning and packs a lot more punch, plus stays around much longer. And for a player ship, the Rapier is better than the Lightning.

For serious trading, I like the Argosy, because they manuver well for a freighter, can put up a good fight, and carry alot. I don't use them much any more because I usually skip straight from Scoutship to Corvette.

If you're just going to be trading around the safe Confederate worlds though, try capturing a Bulk Freighter.

corvette and the argosy, though sometimes i'll be wanting a change and trade with the clipper. i did try the alien mission in a suped up argosy, but failed. (yes, i know, it was a sad day)

When it comes to warfare, I go with the Rebel Destroyer all the way. For trading, I will either use a scoutship (depending on my credits), a heavilly-upgraded argosy, or a kestrel with additional cargo pods.

For fighting my choice is a Rebel Cruiser necause of the number of turrets available combined with high speed and maneouverabilty (Even more with the engine upgrades) . For trading a Corvette with cargo pods is a great choice becuase you can defend yourself against all Pirate ships if you are a good pilot.

If you only want maneuverability and Turret slots, try the Rebel Destroyer, not Cruiser. If you really like fighters, go for the Cruiser, but that's about the only reason to take it over the Destroyer.
And for trading, a well equipped Argosy can handle any pirate and carry more than a Corvette.

The Rebel Cruiser has better sheilding and more weapons room. Plus the fighters are very usefull to deal with other fighters while you concentrate on the mothership.

How do you see this? Unless you are vey good a Kestrel's Lightnings will pound you up-close while the Kestrel launches torps and missles at you. And since the Argosy has none too great maveouvrabilty it will have a hard time avoiding missles. The only part I see it being better at is cargo space.

For combat I use the Lightning - it can outrun missiles with ease and can take down any challenger, plus the speed of it makes it a nice prize.

For trading I use the Lightning - fast enough to outrun pirates who are after your escort freighters and dock before you lose any escorts. Otherwise, the scoutship - speed matters.

Trading with a Lightning? Although the escorts are what gives you the money, they cost a fair amount of money which you wouldn't have to spend if you had a shi pwith a larger cargo capacity.

Combat is something I can master with any ship, shuttle or defender included. However I need something that can take and give fire well and still come through winning. I also like the idea of good fighters onboard my ship, for extra support in case. So my ship of choice is the Kestrel.

For trading I like the idea of a sizeable cargo hold and reasonable defense. I have two choices for that: The Argosy or the Corvette, though I would chose the latter more often.

These are my prefenses.

Try the Zaxted-Diphidia run. The Lightning is the best ship under 1.5 million at it, since in an Argosy with escorts you simply won't survive. Without escorts, or with very few, you might be able to survive, but you're making a lot less money.

1 Lightning, 6 Light Freighters = 1501 tons

1 Argosy, 2 Light Freighters = 730 tons

I said two light freighters because if you have any more Lightnings and Rapiers will be on your tail. The cost isn't too bad for light freighters at all - about 12,000 credits a run, when you're earning over 200,000, I think.

Actually, for plain old trading, I like the Scoutship. Pirate missiles, you say? That's what the afterburner is for! You've got tons of fuel to burn... and throw in an extra 2 fuel tanks if you don't intend to fight at all. Even with lots of freighter escorts it's not difficult - each time you jump into a system, the pirates follow shortly after. If you try to jump out immediately you're too close to them and the missiles finish you off before you can escape. But if you fly past the planets and use the afterburner if needed to get the pirates off the radar, you can jump out in safety. And the engine upgrades, though expensive, always help - missiles seem to fly at around 400, so an upgraded scoutship will outrun them easily.

And your cargo capacity calculations seem unusual - IIRC the light freighter carries 200 tons, and the Argosy 150 or thereabouts. Did you modify your copy of EV or use a plug? Because with plugs, my favorite trading ship is a shuttle with a few freighters in Pale. 300k-1M credits a run, 2 jumps.

Agreed. The Rebel Destroyer is seriously overpowered compared to all the other ships. Anything that turns/flies faster is quickly destroyed with the turrets. Who's afraid of Heavy Rockets? πŸ™‚ Not me! And anything with more armour and shields - well, that's where the 100 torpedoes come in. Who's afraid of cruisers? πŸ™‚ Not me!

If I can't buy the Rebel Destroyer I like the Rapier. Carries a huge load of weapons (for its size) and decently shielded. Easy to fly against anything except cruisers (which require the Monty Python or all the torpedoes you can carry). I sell the rocket launcher and fill up with torpedoes (after the requisite ramscoop+afterburner and sometimes a cargo pod).

Lightning better than Rapier? j00 did not say that, no? πŸ˜‰

A well-equipt Rebel Destroyer with upgrades can do all of those, and at the same time doing a better job. πŸ˜‰

The shielding is a non-issue, since I almost never get hit by anything but primaries in a Rebel Destroyer. And I find the Cruiser generally doesn't carry too much more in the way of weapons. Some, yes, but on the Cruiser you have to buy Torpedo Launchers, and that takes a lot of it's space.

I guess I'm very good then. πŸ†’
Argosies are actually very upgradeable, I like to take 2 Mass Expansions, which still leaves 100 tons of cargo. Being something of a fighter nut, I usually put Hawks on. Ten tons of shield upgrades leaves enough for a Missile Rack and 10 Missiles. Use 6 Missiles to disable the Lightnings before they even get close. You can capture them for use against the Kestral, but don't have to. Then just launch Hawks and unload at the Kestral. Simple.
Oh, forgot to mention, you need RCS, Thrust, and Missile Jammer, Engine Upgrade if you like speed(I find something wrong with my Argosy going fast than the Hawks.). Kestral won't shoot Torps and Missiles are easy to dodge.
It can also be done without hawks, which leaves more space for Missiles, or maybe even Torps with that kind of space left. Anyway, you can take pretty much anything short of a govenment Cruiser fairly.

Rawzer- the "swedish chef."

If you just Monty Python everything, that doesn't prove you've mastered combat. That just proves you know how to exploit the AI with cheesy maneuvers. It isn't cheating, but doesn't show you've "mastered combat." Being able to take out a Kestral in an Argosy is a much better achievment than being able to Monty Python a Confed Frigate in a Shuttle.

The Rebel ships are good but I prefer a Corvette or a very modified Argosy

Responding to the original question...
Early game: Scout
Mid-game: Corvette
Late game: Rebel Destroyer

Trading is a waste of time and effort. Just get the ship which fits your pilot.
