I agree. Trading is a waste of time. I usually get into a corvette as fast as possible, then upgrade to a Kestrel to do the Alien missions, then I buy a Rebel Cruiser.

Kestrels are too big and slow. I like small, fast, and powerful ships like Lightnings and Rapiers.

I normally share your same view on the Kestrel, but if properly upgraded with thrust and turn capabilities (and additional engine space), it makes a good capital vessel that holds the agility of a Rapier or Corvette.

I usually fly a Corvette if I can afford it or an Argosy if I can't. On occasion, I'll reluctantly turn it in for a Kestrel, but I find it a bit slow.

As stated before, upgrades should take care of the Kestrel's speed restrictions. But as for the Kestrel in general, I find it too expensive. You can buy a Rebel Destroyer for a fifth the price, which could easilly destroy a kestrel (but the lightnings would likely take care of the Destroyer).
I don't use Kestrels or Rebel Destroyers at all (though the Rebel Destroyer keeps on looking more and more appealing to me ;)). For both fighting and trading, I use my Rebel Cruiser with an escort of a Confed Frigate, two Kestrels (formerly Bounty Hunters ;)), and three Argosies. I get plenty of firepower, and also 320 tonnes of space.

Actually, if I could get this, I would like to have six Rebel Destroyer escorts... Although I do like having a few extra fighter bays in my fleet.

That would be a simple thing to fix. In my copy of Escape Velocity, Rebel Destroyers can be hired ( a little pricey, however). And when I usually have escorts, I normally have two Rebel Cruisers to provide fighter escorts. The other four escorts are always Rebel Destroyers...
I do prefer, though, to use copies of EV that are heavily un-edited, if you know what I mean. But since a Confed Frigate and two Kestrels makes enough firepower (and I don't want to have to pay much for escorts; I've only dominated about five planets ;)), and I also want a bunch of cargo space (I found a great trade route in Rebel space), my fleet is perfect for me.

It's been a while since I've used this route; I prefer pirating pirates. :)But, here goes:
Start at Clotho II. Pick up some Appetizers and Food.
Drop the Appetizers off at Zaphod Beeblebrox. ( :))
Go to Alkaid. Pick up Food and Equipment.
Go to Yemuro. Drop off half of Equipment; pick up Medical.
Go to Turin. Drop off Food.
Go to Persephone. Pick up Food and Medical.
Go to Satori. Sell Food.
Go to Clotho II. Drop off Medical, repeat.
I think this is it; I might be wrong. I'd have to try doing the actual route, but I'm too lazy to do all that work. And this should be correct; I don't think I left anything out.

300K trading run? Is THAT how you are meant to get $10000000? I usually continually disable freighters at Turin in my Corvette. Oh, and a upgraded Vette will kill any pirate you run into.
well for fighting i would choose the alien cruiser
for trading the curior with all that room

I use for fighting and tradeing my ship is a Reb Cruiser and i have 5 Confed cruisers and one agrosy. i let my fighters and my escourts fighters attack my enemy while the cruisers protect toe Agrosy.
