Supreme Commander Alan Rak, Republican Navy, carefully inspected his fleet detachment. As commander in chief of the Republican Navy, he was responsible for the entirety of the Republican Naval Forces. Persons of his stature usually settled for a desk job in a magnificently appointed office in the royal palace of Sol, however he had opted to lead a task force in the field. His numerous fleet victories had entitled him some degree of independence from the traditional aggressiveness of his overseers. He had garnered the respect of many, and was such entitled the freedom to control and organize his taskforce as he pleased.
After reviewing the most current intelligence provided by the Republican Security & Intelligence Agency, he had decided to be the sovereign commander of the Southern war theatre. Although the Cydonians had but a single naval fleet, it was commanded by the almost mythical Macavenger. Little is known about Macavenger, except that he had scored impossible military victories and was considered to be the most tactically brilliant military commander ever to exist. He had almost single handedly decimated four Lethean battle groups with his small naval warship detachment at the beginning of the Lethe-Cydonian conflict. He also led the exceptionally famous pit viper charge, in which he and a small Cydonian fleet smashed through the entire Lethean Defense Force, considered at the time to be the most advanced defense fleet in existence. He was only repulsed by a combined fleet of four mercenary divisions and three Lethean Defense Groups. Even then, he inflicted massive losses on that fleet, and had single-handedly eradicated the third most powerful navy ever to have existed. Even today his Pit Viper Charge is considered to be the single most effective military offensive ever launched, even superseding the defeat of the United States at the hands of Iraq.
As Rak silently pondered his fleet, a Corporal approached him.
ŇSupreme Commander, Sir.Ó He signaled formally.
ŇAt ease, Corporal. What is it you wish to discuss?Ó Rak replied.
ŇWell, Sir, I have a status report on the operations of our sister fleets at Pollux and Antares.Ó He stated.
ŇGo on, Marine.Ó Rak encouraged.

Rak then interfaced with his digital fleet pad, and accessed the orders of Alpha fleet, at Regulus.

They are prepared to fire a barrage of torpedoes and missiles at any time, and their computer grids have been synchronized with that of the New France defense network.
- All of our Prowlers are patrolling near the hyperspace entry point, preparing to dump ordinance on any attacker at any moment.
- Our Frigates are patrolling right at the edge of missile range, prepared to slam their guided ordinance and then their rockets into any enemies who hyper in.
- Our Gunboats are providing an advance screening picket to attack enemy fighters and light warships.
- Our Cruisers are patrolling nearby our ODSŐs, and providing a screen for them to operate. We have offloaded all twenty patrol-ships. On sighting the enemy, the Cruisers will fire all of their torpedoes and advance towards the enemy, staying well behind the Frigates. The Cruisers, once upon the enemy, will bombard them with concentrated proton turret and neutron cannon fire.

He enjoyed this chair. It was made of leather. Almost no one had leather anymore; few people bothered to keep herds of the ancient Earth cow anymore. But Luke had a large herd on Evildrome. He saw to it that they were well cared for. If they weren't, he banished whoever was responsible to one year in Confederation space.
Luke hated the Confederation. Luke hated nearly everyone. Nearly everyone hated him, except for most pirates and a few Rebels on Turin V. He had once saved a large Rebellion weapons shipment from a Confederation fleet in orbit around Turin V. Luke mostly hated the Rebellion, but he usually left them alone unless they were attacking his pirates.
Right now, Luke was just thinking about how much he hated the Confederation. He wished he could do something about them, but his pirate fleet, while menacing, wasn't nearly as menacing as the Confederation. Luke could hire Mercaneries to help him, but for the most part Luke hated mercaneries and vice versa. Besides, Luke was low on money.

Marshal Ipvicus smiled in satisfaction as he walked on to the bridge of his new flagship. The R.N.S Enterprise was the newest of the Confederate Cruiser Mk II's to come out of the Luna Shipyards... the finest ship in the fleet. As he walked around the Command deck he looked at the faces of his bridge crew, most of them fresh out of the Academy, and suppressed another smile. He remembered his first posting, back during the Great War, on an old wreck of a Frigate called the Steadfast. Walking back to his ready room he was intercepted by a young ensign carrying a Data Pad.
"Sir, we just received final fleet assignments from Prime Minister Rak..." the young ensign said handing him the Pad, "most of the ships are already in-system, and the rest should be arriving shortly."
Taking the Data Pad, Ipvicus dismissed the young ensign and walked into his ready room. After looking over the reports pouring steadily onto his desk terminal he began sending out fleet mobilization orders.

As the RSN Liberty orbited New France, Alan Rak observed the serene beauty of the planet. The ringing of the communications console in his living room rudely interrupted his reverie. He floated over to the console, and activated the view screen. It was a liaison to RSIA.
ŇHello, Sir.Ó The officer stated.
ŇHello, Dr. Waft. What is it you have to report?Ó Rak responded.
ŇWell, Sir, the RSIA has issued a general advisory warning. Probes in the Evildrome system have detected a massive fleet marshalling. It appears that the renegades are preparing to launch a large-scale strike. Their leader is a man by the name of Luke. The RSIA classifies him as an ardent anti-confederate, and a threat to society. The RSIA will soon send you a formal communiqu demanding the relocation of fleet assets to interdict the pirate menace.Ó
Rak decided to pull rank and prestige. ŇTell those self-conscious, power-hungry mongers that they will get no naval assets.Ó
ŇShall I use those exact words, Sir?Ó Waft asked in a heavily British accent.
ŇNo Đ tell them our fleet assets are tied up in a large scale engagement, and that Luke will be dealt with using special resources.Ó

High Commander Shade spun around in his command chair. The original President of the Olympian Union had had an elaborately carved throne-like chair; after deposing the incompetent civilian President and saving the system from Pirate annexation three years ago, Shade now ruled from his command center, located deep beneath the mountain ranges of Hera. His command chair closely resembled that of a capital ship; indeed it had been modelled on the captain's chair of a Confederate Cruiser. From his chair Shade could keep tabs upon the entire Olympus Defence Core, and contact any of the civilian regional govenors he needed to on either planet. Now he called up the ODC statistics, seeking a report.
Squads of one Athena, a Corvette and ten Lightnings were guarding the four routes into Olympus, as they had since shortly after the Revolution. Squads composed of six Athenas, four Kestrels, two Corvettes, two Lightnings and five Rapiers were stationed at the Olympus ends of the four hyperlinks. The remaining forces- six Athenas, four Kestrels, three Corvettes, two Lightnings, and thirty Rapiers, were stationed in quick-response positions where they could get to any danger quickly.
Shade smiled. With no enemies - barring the NeoNetwork, which all Olympians hated - the Solidarity was going well, and showed no signs of abating in power.
Tapping a command into the touchscreen set into the arm of his command chair, Shade called over his second-in-command, a tall, thin Heran woman called Keri. "Hey, Keri, get on the comms to the boys in orbit, tell them to get ready for a subspace relay transmission, would you?" "Yes, sir." Keri grinned.
Tapping his fingers on the arms of his chair until the comms relay was set up, Shade began to speak.
"To Prime Minister Rak of the Confederate Republic of Worlds, from High Commander Shade of the Olympian Solidarity. As you have no doubt guessed, "Shade" is not in fact my real name; it is a code to protect my identity from would-be assassins. Since the Revolution three years ago, when the incompetent civilian government of the Olympus system was removed, the Olympus system has remained mostly closed to other powers. Now, however, the High Command feels sufficiently powerful to reestablish ties with the outside galaxy; we are interested in opening trade negotiations with you. If you have any interest in this, then please respond soon. Sincerely, High Commander Shade, leader of the Olympian Solidarity."

Commander Nick sat on the bridge of his brand new confederate cruiser. Sure, it wasn't a very fast flagship, but it had enough shielding to quiet a few of his troubled thoughts of his own mortality. Nick was a new commander, and as such he felt as though he had to prove his worthiness of his new position. Now the fleet was assembled, and he was ready to make the first step.
There were many independent protectorates surrounding the Darven system, and if Nick was to become known as a strong leader, he needed to do something heroic. thus he hatched his plan to dominate that small 6-system sector of space.
"Set your course for the Perseus System, commander" and the ships entered hyperspace.
Keep in mind that at this time, nobody knew of Nick's intentions. But, they were soon to find out...
The planetary defense fleet of that planet was minimal. Until then, it had been a relatively peaceful area. It consisted of 10 Kestrels, 20 Corvettes, and 20 argosies. They came up to the fleet, totally innocent and unsuspicious. That's when the tigershark fighters hit them.
They came screaming out from the fleet and assulted the slow argosies with a brutal shower of proton discharge. It was one very fast and very vicious pass, and it completely confused and damaged the enemy. The slow argosies were also lowly shielded, and 16 of the 20 were destroyed by that first attack wave. There were a few Tigersharks unlucky enough to be hit by the desperate missiles fired by the corvettes when they realized what was happening, but only 7 were lost due to the quick and unsuspected nature of the attack. At that point, the kestrels released their lightnings, but they simply couldn't catch the Tigersharks. The corvettes of Nick's fleet then began to circle the enemys, harassing them with missile fire. During this exchange, 3 kestrels, 4 corvettes, and all of the lightnings were destroyed, however 8 of Nick's corvettes were also lost. Then something that completely confused the defenders even further happened. Nick's corvettes began to move back. The defenders cautiously closed in on them, harassing them with their missiles. However, they didn't notice until it was too late that the Tigersharks were coming in on a second attack run. This time targeting the kestrels, they repeated their deadly tactic on the demoralized defense. At the same time, the remainder of the fleet turned back to engage the corvettes, which had pullen ahead of the kestrels to fire off their missiles. As the zipping tigershark fighters raked the kestrels with their proton guns, the capital ships of Nick's fleet turned around and obliterated the corvettes with turret fire. The division of the enemy forces and the sheer firepower of Nick's fleet simply overwhelmed them, and Nick took few casualties. Only 9 more Tigersharks and 2 corvettes were lost.
Nick smiled from his command ship. Soon, they will see that this is only the beginning...
And with that he went to his quarters to arrange the government of Pegasus.

"To Prime Minister Alan Rak, from High Commander Shade. I'd like to know how you discovered my name; it's supposed to be a secret. I'd prefer if you referred to me as Shade in further conversation; subspace messages are not completely impossible to intercept, as you know, and there are a few people who would like to see me dead As for the trade deal; the planet of Hera specialises in terraforming techniques and organic farming. As Earth is currently terrible polluted, several of our terraformers have expressed an interest in trying their skills on making it cleaner. Also, we create many delicacies and other items which would be useful to the interstellar marketplace. Our merchant fleets would preferably be escorted by a joint Solidarity-Confederate fleet on the route between Olympus and Sol; we have reason to believe that the Pirates are expanding their influence, and a good show of force will put them off attacking. Sincerely, High Commander Shade, leader of the Olympian Solidarity."
Sitting in his new governmental office on Pegasus, Nick was deep in thought about his plans. He knew the Confederation was too busy with the rebels to care what he was doing to the independent stellars around that region of space, but there was one other concern.
He decided to send a communication to open contact: "Shade of Olympus, I, Nick of Darven, greet you. I have a proposition for you to consider. There are a number of small protecterates bordering My empire that I would like to "include", shall we say. I advise you of this so you don't take it as a move against your territory. I have no intention of invading Olympus, of that you have my word. Thank you for your time, I am more than willing to entertain negotiations concerning this matter. That is all."
All in all, Nick was pleased with the message, and he sent it off over his deep space communication device. But he had little time to think of it, he had many more plans to make...
While Shade was on a short break, a mug of coffee resting on the arm of his chair, Keri came up with a sheaf of message printout. "It's from a Pirate leader, sir." She said. "Thankyou. I'll talk to this guy." Wondering what this pirate could want, Shade read the message.
"To Nick of Darven, from High Commander Shade of the Olympian Solidarity, greetings. If you are not part of the Pirate NeoNetwork, then we can negotiate. Otherwise, there is no choice but for us to eventually come into conflict, as many Olympians recall the invasion of Olympus three years ago by the NeoNetwork. Firstly; thank you for your assurances. Secondly; the Solidarity is beginning trade negotiations with the Confederate Republic. Should you harrass our freighters or their escorts, you will be subject to the full military might of the Olympus Defence Core. Just so you know. Thirdly; the Solidarity is also considering expanding it's influence, namely into Sauron, Zaxted, and possibly Diphidia. I'd appreciate knowing where you intend to expand, so that we do not come to conflict Sincerely, High Commander Shade, leader of the Olympian Solidarity."

Alan Rak surveyed his fleet, he knew that the universe could explode into conflict anytime. What he didn't know was how soon it would...
It was now late into the Heran night; but Shade remained at work, as he often did. Keri had announced her departure several hours previously. The comms system chattered to itself, and disgorged a sheet of message printout; a reply from the Confederate Republic. Reading it, Shade activated the message systems, and began to speak.
"To Prime Minister Alan Rak, from High Commander Shade. I'm glad to accept your agreement; several Argosies carrying some of our environmentalists, as well as a large amount of local fruit produce, will soon depart for Earth. They will be escorted by hmmm, let me check my ODC screens two Athena -class frigates and ten Rapiers. As for Nick of Darven, I have spoken to him, and he seems peaceful enough at this time. As Rak worked feverously at his executive desk, he noticed that the communications console was flashing. There were two unanswered communications. Rak cursed to himself for not checking his correspondence sooner. The first message was from his Finance Advisor, telling him that a purchase of Confederation vessels by BariSax had bolstered the Republican Navy bank account from 52.34M to 122.925M. Rak was anticipating a purchase from this independent player, but had doubted it would be such a large figure. The Supreme CommanderŐs mind started overflowing with ideas. He made a mental note to contact the RSIA to begin a special fleet operation. However, he soon remembered he had a second message. As he read through the message, he was ecstatic that Shade had agreed to trade negotiations. Alan had done, some research on the Heran environmentalists, and held them in the utmost regard.

Seeing that all the necessary tasks were done, Rak decided to spend his newly earned capital. He purchased some ships to supplement the Delta Force, and one top-of-the-line Mk. II Cruiser to be his new flag-vessel.

To Shade of Olympus: "Greetings once again. I am more than willing to negotiate this matter. I too, had intended to expand into those 3 systems, but I am willing to compromise. I am willing to take only Zaxted if you agree never to attack that planet in the future. I am no part of the NeoNetwork, the incidental pirates in my system only come for the "interesting" outfits there. Also, as an afterthought, would you be willing to have a free-trade agreement with us? Meaning we may buy each others ships at base price. If you have other suggestions of a trading nature I am willing to hear them. Are we agreed?

Alan Rak knew, instinctively, that is was time to move. He issued an order to Delta Force to detach the offensive group and begin assaults on the Rebellion. The two new groups are the following:

He ordered SOG-1 to hyper into the Tiber system and capture the system. The Group hypered out of Antares, and set course to Tiber.
Antares -----> Mentos -----> Tiber
When the BattleGroup arrived in Tiber, they were happy to find it only on moderate alert. However, almost immediately, over one hundred Mantas emerged from Port Oread. The Mantas rocketed toward to menacing Confederation ships in a massive pack. However, they were intercepted by sixteen raging Prowlers. The Prowlers aggressively dumped heavy rockets and space bombs into the swarm of mantas, wreaking mass-havoc. Quite a few mantas were able to release their guided ordinance load before the space bomb explosions destroyed them, but their barrage only destroyed five Prowlers.
Tiber is now controlled by the Confederation of Republican Worlds
