I think the biggest problem with the current rules are a.) uncontrolled movements of fleets(no restrictions on hyperspace jumps per turn) b.) technology that didn't exist in EV makes it tough to judge battles when players have no experience flying or seeing them fight c.) lack of unbiased moderator d.) free-will battles
I think the taxation system works well, but I think Independants should be given a chance to eventually rise to the status of major government. Also, better distribution of the 'core' world title-
A galatic map would help much for everyone I think.. as well as a seperate page or site for each player that they keep up to date- its tough wading through 3 pages of essays and trying to remember everyone's fleet locations and sizes and how is doing what where
The single biggest problem we're having are the battle shake-outs. Maybe battles should be decided by an unbiased mod?
Just some thoughts- ~IE
Alright, It is clear to me that something dramatic needs to be done to put this story back on track. Here is what I suggest:
Rebels get Ursa, Agena, Zaphod, and Turin back
All Fed forces in the South except my Battle Groups Four and Five get nuked, and said BG's get placed back in Pollux.
Rebels get three new fleets. One in Adhara consisting of 2 Cruisers, 3 Warbirds, 15 Destroyers, and 72 Mantas. Ditto for fleets in Palshife and Sirgil.
Battle of Yemuro stays as it is (maybe with Jimbob getting a few extra ships, like it or not he was outgunned in the end) and Jimbob's fleet gets put in Zaphod (as if he retreated after Rak's post).
Jager Gets 400M to build a fleet in Jadzia, two unique ship designs free of research cost, and the Nexus system (but you have to stop being angry at Iron Eagle, he didnt know that you were in Levo and its not his fault you didnt know the webstory started).
I know that this is all pretty crazy, but I think we made a big mistake starting the Confederation out with so many recources.

(Is it just me or am I sounding like the Taoist monk that Azdara Ace thought he sounded like at the end of BfS III?)

Just the game... and I'm not trying to single you out, you've just become the only player on my opposing side.
Actually I feel sorry for the situation you were thrust into.. your 'President' at the start of the game pretty much screwed your entire side because of his delay in action and careless distribution of the wealth. All in all, I think this entire story would be 200x's better if there were more players.. then these large fleets wouldn't mass up so fast.

Oh, and I suppose I could use some more help. And players. Kyle hasn't resonded. I thinm I can dig someone up who can be of service to me.
It might be interesting in the next story to add a commerce part.. adding commercial endeavours may encourage different motives.
Also, I think stations would be a good addition to adding in the next story. They exist in EV.. maybe they just take a few turns to build and cost a crapload. Opinions?

For what it's worth, I have been watching, reading (and wincing and laughing). These are my observations:
I ... You guys violated your own rule. You said "no attacking until after everyone had posted." This contributed to your unbalanced start. (You shoulda e-mailed the people who were out of touch.)
II ... Most of you are overly generous to your own attacking fleets. You behave as if you are fighting the AI, not accomplished velociteers.
III ... The map is not as important as the BFS standard of posting you fleet's location at both the beginning and the end of each post..
IV ... Next time you should not allow splitting fleets into more than two locations. This story is way too complicated, trying to track so many fragmented fleets.
V ... The new ships designs are making a mess of the story. You are starting to seem like school kids insisting on invincibility. When a story with standard EV ships (with only the player's flagship upgraded) comes along, the story will be more compelling.
VI ... Time for KK's "Player Awards" to-date: Spl_Cadet - Sneakiest / Luke - Most Entertaining / Rak - Power-hungriest / Shade - Best Overall.
