Yup, its still up at 24.12.145.134 if you've lost the IP. I guess we know where we got it from.

As you all know, my G3 has been down. But right now as I type, my dad and I have been trying to rid the infected computer of a virus known as "666" (That's right... The number of the future antichrist and the devil ;)). Not only that, but the virus is very smart. We've run numerous Norton utilities over the computer (which we have managed to start up), and we've been told everything is fine. We then restart the computer, and everything is once again screwed. Why? The virus reinstalls itself! It has corrupted our system folder...
The only thing I can think of to get the G3 working again is to downgrade to system 9.0 (which should replace the old system file with a new one), and then upgrade again to 9.1. This worked before on a similar virus months ago. It takes a lot of time, but it's our best shot. Just thought I'd let you all know.
The only good news I can give you is that the virus has NOT affected the hard drive in any way. In other words, I haven't lost any of my year's worth of graphics, or Infini-D (thank goodness), or any other major applications. Just hope we can get everything fixed, 'kay?
Also, be on the lookout for this virus. I know I didn't get it through a download file, but instead through e-mail. Be sure that the e-mail files you open are safe. Graphic attachments can NOT have virus attached to them, but .sit files sometimes (but rarely) can. All you Boozerama participants know I hunt down anyone who mocks the name of Dr. Pepper, and I'm going to hunt down the idiot who sent me the virus.

If I get any emails I don't like the smell of, I tend to send another to myself, select from the "safe" email to the one before the fishy one, and delete.
That way, I don't even open the email window, which some viruses are clever enough to implant themselves from.

Good idea. I'll try that next time I got a suspicious e-mail. I got the "hanson" virus months back, but Macs are immune to it. Hqx files are Windows only...

.hqx are Win only? Funny, practically every file in the EV Addons folder is in that format...and apart from .sit and .bin, .hqx is what I open with Stuffit Expander most often.
------------------ CoreyΕ (Cubed) Uh, that word? You spelled it wrong. Yeah, that one right there, next to the period. And you're missing an apostrophe in the word "its".

Hmm... Maybe I'm getting mixed up with some other Windows file. Perhaps .zip? All I know was that the "hanson" file I received could not be read by my Macintosh operating system (thank goodness).
.zip can be opened by stuffit, too. Probably .exe is what you are thinking about.

Perhaps so. Windows file formats are so confusing they aren't worth remembering.
Yeap. After all, Windows is MacOS with a few good features taken away, and a few inconveniant and frusterating ones added.
And you think I'm kidding.
Eh? Who said you were kidding?
Hmm, I passed 500. Odd...

True. The one your thinking of is likely .vbs, though. Visual Basic Script. Most viruses, especially e-mail viruses, tend to come in that form.

Because they are pretty easy to make.
From what I understand.

The only virus I ever got said "You have received the Macintosh virus. It works on the honour system. Please delete one important file and send it to everyone in your outbox." I kept it,but didn't delete anything. Is this virus why you haven't responded to my email?

Er, that was said seven posts ago.

It's a joke. The most common form is known as the honor virus, like this:
This virus works on the honor system. Please e-mail this virus to everyone in your Address Book, then reformat your hard drive.
It never will do anything, it's just a text joke.

Strange. I have been using Norton utilities for almost ten years and have never had any damage to any of the Macs I have used them on, in fact they have salvaged data from damaged disks many times and cleared up problems on hard drives more times than I can count.
A few years ago there were several incidents of people erasing data from their hard drives when they used older versions of Norton utilities on the then new HFS+ format disks. Of course any disk-maintenance utility can do serious damage if used improperly.
I would be interested in knowing how many Macs you have damaged by using Norton products as recommended and How many Macs you personally know of that have been damaged by using Norton utilities correctly.
Not that Norton products are the best thing out there, but as far as I can telI they are comparable to similar products and I have been very satified with their performance.

LOL! That joke is so funny!!!! At least, I think so. Made me laugh for the first time today, anyhow.
As for me, Norton products have just about always fixed my Macintosh problems... There were a few times they didn't catch a few things, but they certainly never messed my computers up.
I once had a whole bunch of 500mb+ disc images on my hard drive, and I ran norton speed disk. All the disc images were absolutely destroyed. They became 1k PC documents.
That sort of scared me away from norton stuff for a while. I keep a copy of norton on my hd, but only in case of emergencies.
