Did you guys know this? David Arthur revealed this to me. If you want to try out Rebel ships on a pilot, and you're playing Confederate, don't dispair any longer! After completing the Confederate Alien Missions, you can buy Confederate ships AND Rebel ships and Mass Driver! The only catch: although you have access to Rebel stuff, you can't get a cloaking device or tractor beam. Just the particle beam. Hey, it's better than that lousy Plasma Siphon in EVO!

No, it has to do with the Confed mission setting the same bit that the Rebel mission does, but not vice versa. Easily correctable bug.
