Speaking of ship upgrade ladders, mine usually goes something like this:
Shuttle Argosy (for a short while. I sometimes skip this one) Lightning (make a living off pirates) Rebel Destroyer (my favorite) Rebel Cruiser (usually don't get it, since I enjoy my Rebel Destroyer all the more)
------------------ -Cap'n Skyblade (url="http://"http://www.saberstudios.f2s.com")Saber Studios(/url) - Your source for original EV/O/N graphics. the Confederation Graphics Expansion Set: Coming soon
A.I: Clipper
Player: Courier
And there have been polls like this before.

Clipper, like this: Sell the proton guns, buy lasers. Buy missile rack + 4-8 missiles Sell the Javelins, buy armor+afterburner+(and other essentials) After a bit of plunder, buy speed, turning, thrust, shield upgrades
Now you are flying a lite Lightning. Of course all the upgrades cost as much as a real Lightning (which has heavy rockets and better maneuvering in addition), which is why the clipper sucks. If the Lightning and Rapier were 300K more expensive, the clipper would be a great buy.

Who besides me immediately thought "Neither. Scoutship." ?

On all of your ship advance ladders, you're missing out a key ship, the defender. Most people don't give much creedit to the defender, but it's one of the funnest ships to fly, and makes a good ship for pirating other ships. I went straight to a Kestrel from a Defender once.

I, for one...

Yes... defenders are fun to fly, but otherwise useless, unless you cheat and give them some shields and cargo space.

It would probably be helpful to this discussion if I posted my upgrade path, too. (BTW - I usually change ships a lot more often than many people seem to.)
Shuttle
Scoutship
Courier
Argosy
Corvette
After this, my path varies. Sometimes, if it feels necessary, I'll buy a Kestrel, although I don't really like its speed restrictions on a ship with its level of armament. Sometimes, I'll buy a Confederation frigate or heavy cruiser. Of course, if I have the Talon plugin installed, I'll buy a Corvette Destroyer or a Raven.

Me.
Rebel Destroyer/Confed Cruiser
That's how I do it. Those are really the only ships you need, though I do sometimes get an Argosy as a Confed, since the Diphidia set doesn't work out so well then.

Yeah, well, I already posted a Courier vs. Scoutship topic. What next? Defender vs. Shuttle?? Wait, that wouldn't be so bad.
Clipper, if you won't let me pick Scoutship. <sniff>

Bleh, that's only for those rare occasions when I actually play as a Confederate, just to remember what their missions are like and answer questions here.
Of course, now that work has started on the Confederate mission string of (url="http://"http://members.home.net/e-gamerguy1/ev/alien_invaders/main.html")AI(/url), I'll probably be getting another for testing.

Yeah, I also play as a Confed every year or so, just to refresh my memory of their sluggish ships. I usually don't take a liking for destroying Rebel vessels...
Good luck on your Confederation mission strings. Perhaps if I could have some of the graphics for the Confederation graphics set I'm making completed soon, you could use some of those as replacement graphics.

I suggest not playing the confed string of the plug when it's finished then. But then, you may not be able to help yourself.

Probably not, I don't think I'm going to need any, and because of something I'm trying to do, most likely will want them even less. We'll see though.
Gee, I guess watching EVula has been good for me... how many topics have I hijacked to talk about my plug now? <evil grin>
I vote Clipper. It's always my second ship. You can give it all kinds of upgrades and boost its shields to amazing resistance. And having more weopns, it has an overall advantage. Don't forget, it's more "changable" than the Courier. HEY! What's the Poll Count??

Clipper - 12 Courier - 8
The much maligned Clipper seems to be winning by a good margin here.
Note: I haven't marked Skyblade down for either, since he's never indicated a clear preference, other than Scoutship.

I most certainly prefer the Clipper over the Courier (I thought my first post in this topic would have given the impression that I favored the Clipper over the Courier, but I guess not). Mark another vote for the Clipper.

Well, when you say "it depends on what I'm doing," that makes it a bit tough.
