Did something happen that I missed?
==================
As the fleet hypered into the Zebetrious system, they were met by the Confederation, guns blazing. It was not the immense number of ships that they were afraid of, however.
No, it was the Particle Beams. The Heavy Cruisers had been armed with these deadly weapons, as or more powerful than the Rebellion's Compressor Beams.
"All ships, release fighters and fire," Vaten's voice crackled over the comm. "Just don't destroy the C.S.S. Intruder."
It was true, there were only 50 Star Cobras, but they could easily handle three Patrol Ships each, and the Mantas could take the rest.
Their real fear was confirmed as a flash of blue beams destroyed six Destroyers. The Zalif had also been shaken to 55 percent shields. "To all Destroyers: attack the Frigates. Starscreamers, target Cruisers with bombs."
The C.S.S. Intruder was disabled. "Assemble a boarding party at the ventral airlock of the Intruder. There is a very special present for us onboard." It was truly, a special thing. The Rebellion needed to analyze this weapon system aboard the Intruder, and possibly other ships, very badly. It was crucial to a final Rebel victory.
It looked like the battle was progressing well for the Rebellion. However, it was not destined to be that easy a victory. Suddenly, a huge missile appeared on a certain Typhoon Carrier's target screen. The Carrier had no time to radio. The missile simply slammed into the Carrier, demolishing it.
"Holy ****!" Vaten exclaimed over the comm. "What was that?"
Admiral Ma'ose's voice came back over the radio. "It would appear that the Confederation has perfected their Destroyer missile, Commander."
"So that's it, eh? I think I know what to do. Compressor beams, fire now."
In a sudden flash of red light, six Heavy Cruisers and countless fighters had their engines and life support systems pulverized under Compressor fire. Including the C.S.S. Intruder. Commander Vaten was quite angry now. "We have limited time. Boarding party, permission to enter granted."
"Permission received. Boarding commencing..."
The Confederation was clearly not going to win this battle. All they wanted, however, was for the...
It was done. The reinforcements had arrived. The Confederation should not lose their secret this battle. "Damn," shouted Vaten. "Get the commandoes off the Intruder." Suddenly it exploded. Thankfully, a few commandoes had been saved.
And then, it was over. There were three disabled Heavy Cruisers in the wreckage. "All fighters, return to ships. All ships, halt fire. We need three boarding parties for the disabled ships." These were quickly assembled, and boarded the ships with Admiral Ma'ose at their head.
As they crept around the corners of the ships, resistance was encountered, but quickly overcome with turbolaser rifles. "We found it, Commander," Ma'ose radioed back to Vaten. "Good, good. I hoped you would. All parties, return to ships."
As they began to return, the ships started breaking up. Quickly, they boarded the ships. Resistance fire became even stronger, however. Ma'ose quite quickly found a neutron bolt lodged in his arm. "Now! Break for it!" shouted Ma'ose.
They did make it back to the ships, but at a heavy loss. Half of the commandoes were either dead or crippled, and although they did have the Destroyer missile system, it would not be used for Rebel ships eventually. The Rebellion considered it an inefficient weapon. Instead, it would be studied for defense against it.
As the fleet made their way to Capella, they reflected on their victory there. It had cost them over a third of the Naval Wing. And they would discover something quite odd in Capella...
------------------ Let's see...they're diamonds on wheels. Cool.
"Torpedo tubes one and two, fire at random!" Skyblade radioed from the bridge of the Triton Corsair. In a few short seconds, a burst of torpedoes raced away from the firing ports of the Rebel Destroyer, heading directly toward the front-line Confederation warships, composed of forty cruisers. Unlike the Battle of Turin, the Confederation was sending in their cruisers first, in hope of punching a few holes through the Rebel line of defense. Soon, all sixty-five Destroyers of the 213th Navial Division followed the Triton Corsair's example, firing torpedoes as fast as the launchers would allow.
Commander Skyblade eyed his torpedoes, and watched them score a direct hit on the C.N.S. Carenton. Though the Rebel Destroyers on the front line were delievering astonishing amounts of torpedoes at the cruisers, the Confederation was doing the same. As the Triton Corsair fired yet another burst of torpedoes, the C.N.S. Carenton returned fire. Four torpedoes appeared on the Triton Corsair's alert sensors, and sped towards the mid-section of the hull. Seconds later, a violent explosian shook the ship, knocking the crew of their feet.
As Commander Skyblade crawled back into his seat, he asked Lieutenant Dobson for a shield report.
"Senors indicate that the Triton Corsair's shields are at 68%. Though our shields were able to deflect most of the damage, turret number four is damaged, with auto-tracking computer out of action. It will have to operate manually."
"Very well," Skyblade said, as he watched the C.N.S. Carenton fire off another burst of four torpedoes.
"Captain Carlos, give me full speed, right full. We'll try to dodge this next wave if we can help it."
The Triton Corsair neared the Carenton, with proton turrets blazing. The incoming torpedoes fired from the Confederation cruiser nearly hit the engines of Skyblade's ship, but missed by a few meters. The four torpedoes began to wrap around from behind.
"Carlos, sharp left turn, maximum battle speed," Skyblade ordered, as panic threatened his voice.
As the Triton Corsair turned behind the C.N.S. Carenton, the torpedoes did just what Skyblade wanted. Due to the menuvers of the Corsair, the torpedoes slammed into the side of the Carenton, which had drifted into the torpedos' path.
"Way to go, Carlos! Now let's get the Carenton from behind."
The Rebel Destroyer, now in rather good shape from shield regeneration, crept up behind the sluggish Confederation cruiser. Seconds later, two heavy rockets raced toward the engines of the Carenton, fatally crippling the ship. As the four proton turrets continued to fire at the cruiser, Triton Corsair began to receive more damage from the enemy's own turrets. By the time Skyblade's destroyer had again moved out of turret range, the Carenton was about finished.
Lieutenant Dobson spoke. "Sir, the Carenton's shields are now at 12%."
"Excellent," Skyblade responded.
As Commander Skyblade was about to give the order to finish off the Carenton with torpedoes, a squadron of thirty mantas, spear-headed by two star cobras, raced ahead of the Triton Corsair. In a short matter of time, the fighters had decimated the cruiser with missiles and javelin rockets.
As the C.N.S. Carenton's hull collapsed and exploded, Skyblade glanced at the other Confederation cruisers. Many remained, but nothing was too hard for a fleet of Rebel Destroyers.
The Confederation cruiser now nearest the Triton Corsair, the C.N.S. Enterprise, was being swarmed by three Rebel Destroyers. Though the cruiser was blazing away with proton turrets, the ship was confused with which destroyers to fire upon, and the mistake quickly cost the ship its commission; and life. As Skyblade let out a brief cheer of joy at scratching another Confederation cruiser, he suddenly froze as he saw the weapon that few survived to tell about.
"Commander Skyblade to fleet! Beware, visual contact has confirmed that a few of these cruisers are armed with partical beams. All destroyers, avoid close-range combat with the cruisers armed with these weapons, and leave the job up to the fighters."
After Skyblade had finished his sentence and closed off comm channel three, he saw two of his destroyers explode instantly from heavy damage delievered by partical beams. The two destroyers didn't have time to pull away from the partical-armed cruisers before being decimated.
Seconds later, Skyblade saw Vollorium lead his squadron of thirty mantas toward one of the cruisers that had just destroyed a Rebel destroyer with a partical beam. The squadron fired continual bursts of long-range turbolasers and javelins, checking off yet another cruiser. Using these swarms of fighters, the capital ships couldn't react fast enough to defeat the attacks.
"Vollorium to Skyblade, Confederation losses have climbed to thirteen cruisers and seventy-three patrol ships. Our own losses measure fifteen destroyers. My squadron is prepa-"
"Vollorium, I'm not reading you. Please repeat," Skyblade shouted, holding his breath.
He then noticed Volloriam's manta spinning away from a direct hit from by neutron blasters. His fighters spun away in flames for a few seconds before exploding.
Commander Skyblade sat stunned for a few seconds breathing heavilly, deeply saddened at the death of his older brother. After whispering a brief prayer for the person who had tought him the skills of a captain, he continued the battle.
"Major Ronsard, you take over for Vollorium. Take your squadron and attack the C.N.S. Overlord from behind. It has been confirmed that this particular cruiser is carrying a partical beam."
"Roger sir, fighters engaging target. Stand by for battle report," Ronsard replied.
During that moment, another Rebel Destroyer was hit by a bright blue partical beam, disabling it instantly. The 213th Division couldn't afford these losses for long.
"Commander Skyblade to fleet. We must destroy as many of these cruisers as possible before the frigates join the battle. Every kill counts!"
Skyblade took the Triton Corsair in for a dull against four patrol ships. The small Confederation crafts were swarming a Rebel Destroyer in a even assault.
"Proton turrets, target the patrol craft attacking the R.S.S. Pacific," Captain Carlos ordered from the bridge of the Triton Corsair.
Blue bolts raced toward the fighters, tearing them to pieces. Though a few of the stray shots hit the Pacific, no major damage was inflicted. Moments later, all four patrol ships were no more.
"That's four less Confeds to worry about. Thanks Corsair," the captain of the R.S.S. Pacific radioed.
Although the Confederation had now lost twenty-eight cruisers, the Rebel destroyer fleet losses had climbed to thirty-two: Half the original size.
"Sir," Lieutenant Dobson said with a trace of fear in his voice, "We cannot take these losses."
"You're right, Dobson," Skyblade replied. "Commander to fleet. All destroyers pull back behind our cruisers. We need the backup, and we won't survive without it."
Throughout the line of battle, Rebel Destroyers made 180 degree turns, racing away at full speed while proton turrets continued to tear away at the Confederation hulls.
As the Triton Corsair headed toward the line of twenty cruisers, torpedoes began to fire away from the them. Before all the destroyers had flown behind the cruisers, hundreds of torpedoes were in flight, smashing at the fronts of the oncoming Confederation cruisers.
"Commander Skyblade to fleet. Fighter squadrons one through three, continue to take on the cruisers. Squadrons four through seven, engage enermy fighters."
At that moment, the torpedoes began to hit their marks. The already-damaged lead cruisers, the C.N.S. Glorious and Illustrious, were destroyed before they could engage the Rebel cruisers with turret fire. By the time the cruisers of both sides had clashed, seven more Confederation cruisers were space junk.
"Fighter Squardrons," Skyblade radioed, "we can take the battle from here. All squadrons engage enemy fighters."
Confederation patrol ships were becoming a rare site, as the fast and agile mantas destroyed them with ease. Meanwhile, The Rebel cruisers and destroyers were finishing off the enemy cruisers.
"The eleven remaining enemy cruisers are heavilly damaged," Lieutenant Dobson said, "and three of them are heading away from the battle."
"Excellent! Continue assault. We need to git rid of as many of them as we can."
As the sluggish Confederation cruisers began to disappear one by one, the Rebellion had yet to lose a single cruiser. Though the enemy had inflicted severe losses on the destroyer fleet, they hadn't stood a chance against the Rebel line of cruisers.
"Major Ronsard to Corsair. The last two cruisers have reached Stardock Alpha, and are out of visual contact. They won't be seen in this battle again."
Commander Skyblade was amazed that the Confederation line of cruisers had been defeated. He then found out that thirty of the enemy cruisers that had been destroyed were by the manta squadrons.
"Fleet, this is Skyblade. I just read the battle reports, and it seems as though the manta fighter squadrons performed the best against the enemy ships. Order your fighters back to hangers for weapon-refitting, and this time we'll order nearly all mantas to engage the frigates once they arrive. The Destroyers will remain behind the battle for awhile for repairs, and give the cruisers a chance to destroy some capital vessels. It will only be a matter of minutes before the frigates get here. There will be over one-hundred of them, but if our fighters did this well against cruisers, we can surely show a bunch of frigates the true definition of strategy."
Moments later, an incredible line of frigates appeared on visual sensors. They're number seemed unbeatable, but the Confederation had made another costly mistake: Sending in capital ships without fighter support.
"Manta squadrons, get out there and get rid of as many frigates as possible before they reach our cruisers. Use the same tactics you used against the enemy cruisers, but beware. These vessels are armed with heavy rockets, and will cause heavy losses if you attack the ships from the front. Now move!"
President of the Corsair Development Team (url="http://"http://artworks.tmgmedia.net")Corsair Homepage(/url) | (url="http://"http://pub57.ezboard.com/bcorsairdevelopers")Corsair Web Board(/url) | (url="http://"http://pub101.ezboard.com/bstarbasedelta")Starbase Delta(/url)
Mantas raced toward the frigates, still bold in numbers. Only forty-one mantas had been lost out of four-hundred, and their performance seemed to excel above anything the Confederation had to offer in terms of fighters.
As Commander Skyblade observed the mantas race toward the line of enemy frigates, he got a report from Lieutenant Dobson.
"Sir, it seems as though an abnormal Confederation ship is slowly flying just behind the line of frigates. My senors indicate that it's an "Argosy" class medium cargoliner, but it's flying in Confederation colors."
"Intersting," Skyblade replied. "It is possible that the Confederation could be using this ship as a sensor homing beacon, but I can't say for sure. Take the Triton Corsair around the frigates at full speed, and let's see if we can find out just what that ship is doing here."
While the mantas began to engage the Confederation frigates, the Triton Corsair slowly began to slip around the right flank of the enemy line. A minute later, Skyblade was behind enemy lines, a few thousand kilometers away from the argosy.
"Dobson, can you make out the ship?" Skyblade asked with curiousity.
Lieutenant Dobson took a few seconds before responding, carefully reading his computer. "It seems as though the argosy is carrying a large amount of equiptment, but I can't make exactly what kind of equiptment it is.
"That confirms my suspicion," Skyblade said plainly. "That ship is carrying something to use against us, and it carries Confederation markings."
Commander Skyblade looked at the ship for a few more seconds before continuing. "Proton turrets, target that argosy and destroy it immediately."
Proton bolts racketed the argosy, tearing through its thin armor. The argosy returned fire with three proton turrets, offering the Triton Corsair some forimidable damage. Seconds later, six escape pods raced away from the base of the argosy, heading straight toward earth. During that time, the argosy exploded.
"Confederation argosy destroyed," Dobson said.
Commander Skyblade then ordered the Triton Corsair to return to battle. Since his ship was beyind enemy lines, Skyblade would have to fight his way to friendly lines.
By the time the Triton Corsair came into visual contact with the engines of the frigates, the Confederation and Rebellion were already locked in combat. Mantas were seen everywhere, pounding the frigates and successfully avoiding the heavy rockets that were fired every now and then. The Rebels had lost two cruisers, two destroyers, and fifteen mantas, but thirteen frigates were reported out of action.
Captain Skyblade looked at the engines of a nearby Confederation frigate, making an inviting target.
"Captain Carlos, take the Corsair toward that frigate. Full speed ahead," Skyblade ordered.
When the Triton Corsair had closed in to a short distance, a volley of heavy rockets and missiles smashed into the backside of the frigate. The vessel lurched forward, slowly drifting out of control. a swarm of mantas then finished off the ship.
Suddenly, a group of three frigates headed toward the Triton Corsair from portside. They had discovered that Skyblade's destroyer was the flagship, and the destruction of the ship would break vital communications and battle operations.
Two of the frigates launched heavy rockets and a few missiles. Seconds later, the weapons collided against the Corsair, dangerously weakening the hull and putting two proton turrets out of action. While the remaining two proton turrets struggled to return fire, Skyblade's destroyer wasn't going to last much longer...
"Commander! Shields have plummeted to 18%, and the hull is in critical condition!" Lieutenant Dobson yelled, doing his best to make himself heard over the numerous emergeny sirens and warnings.
"Take the ship away from the frigates as quickly as possible," Skyblade replied, trying to climb back into his seat. Another explosian then rocked the ship, with much more force then before.
Dobson again spoke. "Engines one and two have exploded, and number three is badly damaged. The reactor core it threatening to override, and all weapons are off line!"
"Prepare to abandon ship! Activate all escape pods!"
By now, the shields of the Triton Corsair had been totally decimated, and a few structures inside the hull were the only items holding the heavilly-damged and disabled destroyer together.
As the crew of the Triton Corsair prepared to climb into the escape pods, the ship suddenly lost all main and emergency power, disallowing the escape pods to launch. For a few seconds, Skyblade believed he and his crew were about to go down with his ship...
Then and there, the three frigates that were about to finish off the Triton Corsair were hit by a tremendous barage of missiles from a fleet of sixty-nine destroyers that seemed to come out of know where. In seconds, all three frigates were added to the Confederation list of losses.
The emergency radio of the Triton Corsair then roared to life. "Commander Skyblade, this is Captain Overrider of the 96th warfleet. We've come to aid you in the destruction of the Confederation fleet."
All over the ship, cheers went up from the crew. In the nick-of-time, Overrider had saved the Triton Corsair and its crew from certain destruction.
"Captain Overrider, the Triton Corsair thanks you, but our ship is dead and off-line. We request evacuation onto one of your fleet vessels," Commander Skyblade stated over the radio.
"Copy that, Commander. We're sending the R.S.S. Ellsondor, a Rebel cruiser, in to evacuate your ship. You'll be given full command of the ship, and you can take the battle from there," Overrider repsonded.
"Thanks Captain. Let's hurry this up if we want to win this battle."
While the R.S.S. Ellsondor docked with the disbaled Triton Corsair, the battle continued to rage. While the waves of Confederation frigates seemed to have began to take a lead over the 213th Division, they were surprised from behind by an entire new Rebel division. Moments after Captain Overrider entered the system, twenty-three extra frigates had been destroyed.
Commander Skyblade, meanwhile, headed to the bridge of the R.S.S. Ellsondor, the new flagship. Being used to commanding a ship far smaller then his previous vessel, Skyblade felt as if he had some extra firepower in his hands.
"213th and 96th Navial Divisions," Skyblade radioed, "continue assault. The frigates are surrounded, and they won't last long."
Captain Overrider's cruiser raced by, delievering a volley or torpedoes and proton fire to a frigate. After passing the damaged ship, his four mantas ship finished it off with missiles.
"Battle report," Skyblade requested.
"Computer indicates that the Confederation has lost ninety-four frigates during the second wave. Our own losses measure sixteen destroyers, seven cruisers, and eighty-nine mantas," the officer replied.
The Confederation was now in a desperate situation. Though they still had a third wave of gunboats to come, the question was wether they would last long enough. Only twenty-one frigates remained.
After watching a manta squadron disable an additional frigate, his computer began to receive truce messages on comm channel eight from the frigates. Being desperately outnumbered, the enemy was now down to two choices: Fight to the death or surrender. In the following minute, twelve frigates had surrendered and agreed to allow Rebel troopers to enter the ships, while the other frigates that stubbornly resisted and continued to fight began to dissapear. Atlast, the only three frigates remaining entered hyperspace and exited the battle.
At 17:30 hours, the Rebellion had successfully defeated two waves of Confederation warships in a stunning victory. If it hadn't been for Captain Overrider and his 96th Division, the battle would have been lost.
"Commander Skyblade to fleet. The third wave of enemy ships, consisting of two hundred gunboats, has retaliated and left the Sol system. It's now a safe bet to declair this day a Rebel victory!"
The entire fleet began to head towards Stardock Alpha, totally prepared to destroy the station. A group of twenty cruisers lined up at the south side of the station a few hundred thousand miles away. When Skyblade gave the order, the cruisers fired all their remaining torpedoes. The armor of Stardock Alpha didn't last long, collapsing on itself in seconds. A violent explosian the rocked the system, shaking even the Rebel cruisers located far away from the station. The reactor core had been destroyed, and Stardock Alpha began to send debri is all directions. After the flames cleared, the space where the great Confederation shipyard once stood was now empty.
Chears went up across the comm channels, for the Rebellion had delievered a crippling blow. This day, the Confederation had lost two full warfleets, along with their most important station dedicated to the war effort.
The Battle of Sol had been won, but it was far from over. Eleven Confederation warfleets still roamed the core worlds, and they were well prepared to take on the Rebellion anytime, any day. The 213th and 96th Navial Divisions lacked the firepower to destroy any of the planets of Sol, so the fleets were forced to fall back to the friendly Rebel worlds. But the mission had been accomplished, and the Confederation would never be the same again.
the death of Skyblade's brother was a like a stab in the back, but war brings a risk at every turn. After leaving for Turin, Skyblade promoted Overrider to the rank of Commander, and Jonathan Navarone personally promoted Skyblade to the rank of General.

Anyway back to the story...
Macavenger leads his fleet up from Port Oread in a surprise raid on the Antares system. With the Confederate fleet busy being upgraded at Sol or defending other Rebel incursions, there is no special fleet at Antares, but it is not undefended. Two Cruisers have returned with Particle Beams, and have several Frigates and fighters as escort. This is no mathc for the fleet of Assault Carriers, which have 48 Mantas(54 counting mine), and are still able to fight almost as well as Rebel Destroyers. Two Assault Carriers and their fighters destroy the fighters, while the rest of the Mantas swarm the Frigates. The other Carriers and Macavenger's Cruiser put down the Cruisers with a steady diet of Torpedoes, but not before they take out many Mantas with their beams. The garrison on Antares Station launches additional fighters, but they are no match for all the Rebel missiles. Antares station is then destroyed under heavy Proton bombardment. Remaining Mantas destroy all the Astex freighters in the system en passant.
Macavenger recalls uncovering a secret weapons factory on New Providence while aiding nearby Diphidia II some years ago. Locating this site from orbit, he finds that the entrance is large enough to send fighters inside the mines. After refueling, the fleet of fighters, still numbering over 30, is sent into the mines. As they head for the end of the primary shaft, where the weapons factory is, they destroy mining equipment with laser cannons. Arriving at the factory, they blow through the outer while with a rain of missiles and complete the destruction with more laser fire, then fly back to the fleet.
By this time, Confederate reinforcements have arrived. 3 Cruisers and 6 Frigates jump into the system and attack. Being rather low on ammunition and without the fighters which are still returning, the fleet is hard pressed. The flagship Cruiser, R.S.S. Annihilator, carrying more torpedoes, is able to take down another cruiser, but in the meantime 2 Carriers are lost as they attack the Frigates, destroying one. Then the Mantas return, and destroy another Frigate while returning to dock. The fleet then wheels about and exits the system, having destroyed the Confederation's most valuable assets there: the mine, factory, and space station.

The facility on Ruby was evacuated and moved to Earth when a test version of the Hyperspatial Early Warning Sensors detected a large hostile fleet approaching.

Hmm. I wonder where that Argosy came from. It certainly wasn't mine - mine would return fire with a lot more than proton turrets, and its armour is far from thin. Sorry!

Ok...I thought we were being realistic here. Last time I remembered, the argosy couldn't even carry three turrets as I said in the story, and even upgraded with plenty of armor, no argosy would last long against a destroyer. Atleast the escape pods got away...
The highest ranking officers of the Confederate Space Navy are gathered in an assembly hall on Earth. David Arthur is addressing them. On a screen behind him is a video clip of a large bird-like ship with Confederate markings.
"Gentlemen, allow me to present the Terran Naval Yards/Atinoda Osprey-class strike frigate. It's based on the design of the Kestrel escort frigate which has been so successful in the private sector, but incorporates the latest technology from the research labs at the MOD. It's equipped with tritanium armor, 500 terawatt shielding, a new turreted version of the particle beam cannon, and a fighter bay that can carry three fighters, and is equipped to service not only standard TNY patrol ships and missile gunboats, but also the industry-standard Lightning fighters. It can out-gun a rebel destroyer and out-maneuver a cruiser. Best of all, it's quick and inexpensive to produce as it uses many industry-standard parts from the private sector and can be built not only by TNY on Luna but by Atinoda's factories as well. One prototype ship, the C.N.S. Macdonald, has already been put into service, and many more will begin entering the fleet in a few days."

In case you've forgotten, the rebel destroyer ~is~ an Argosy. My ship isn't just an off-the-shelf Argosy with a few modifications made by a civilian outfitter. It was part of a limited run of Argosies re-engineered by Terran Naval Yards for use by the Ministry of Defence. The modifications to the basic design are on the level of those made to the destroyer.

Hmm, we may need something new to counter these new Atinoda things. Without the particle beam turret, the Assault Carriers would probably be good enough, but it's there. I think I can adapt the Carriers, though.
/me goes to drawing board

"President Navarone, I have some important information, and it isn't good news," a high-ranking officer in the Rebel government spoke.
Jonathan Navarone glanced at the Admiral, then at the papers he was holding. "Is that so?" He replied. "Let's have a look."
Admiral Devon layed the papers on Navarone's desk, desplaying high-quality photos, radar scans, and wireframes of an interesting new vesesl.
"What is this? It looks much like the Kestrel, and I've never seen this particular ship," Navarone spoke in awe has he looked at the images one by one.
"Precisely, sir," Admiral Devon continued. "Our chief spy, code named Overrider, was on duty just outside the core of Curzon. To his surprise, he spotted a new vessel, which you are currently looking at, and being escorted by a medium-sized Confederation fleet. We believe this ship to be a new warship developed for the Confederation's war effort, and if you look closely at this photo, a fighter bay door is clearly visable."
"Hmmm..." Navarone groaned, leaning back in his chair. "Do you have any information on this vessel?"
Admiral Devon glanced at a clip board he was carrying, then went on. "Yes sir. Overrider first believed this ship to be a light cruiser of some sort, but such is not the case. After watching the ship for awhile, Overrider reported three patrol ships leaving the bay of the vessel. In any circumstance, this ship is designed for intense combat, and serves as a carrier at the same time. Though we don't know if patrol ships will be the official fighters used by this vessel, we do know that the Confederation has hopes for pulling ahead of the Rebellion in terms of ship technology. We need to to keep a careful eye on this project."
"I see," Navarone said with interest. "So this new ship is probably a prototype, being trialed in Curzon. Since it represents the kestrel in terms of design, we will give this new rival the code name 'Osprey.' "
"Very well, sir," Devon spoke, glad to see that Navarone was taking interest in this dangerous situation. "But remember, Stardock Alpha no longer exists, so we can expect the project to take some time before entering service with the Confederation Navy. But in any case, this shouldn't allow us to take our guard down. I'll keep you updated on the situation. Have a good day, Mr. President."
Admiral Devon saluted, then turned and closed the door behind him.

Just for reference, here's some specifics of Rebellion technology. Captain Skyblade, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. David, if you could do this for the Confederation, that would be great.
I'm not using precise EV shielding figures, by the way.
Manta: 20 Shields, 0 Armor. 4 Turbolasers, weak Compressor Beam, 150 Javelin Rockets.
Star Cobra: 35 Shields, 10 Armor. 5 Turbolasers, 8 Missiles, 200 Javelin Rockets.
Starscreamer: 30 Shields, 5 Armor. 3 Turbolasers, 10 Precision Bombs, 5 Missiles.
Rebel Destroyer: 300 Shields, 80 Armor. 4 Turbolaser Turrets, 20 Torpedoes, Compressor Beam.
Rebel Cruiser: 550 Shields, 120 Armor. 5 Turbolaser Turrets, 4 Mantas, 35 Torpedoes.
"C" Class Rebel Cruiser: 550 Shields, 120 Armor. 5 Turbolaser Turrets, 4 Star Cobras, 35 Torpedoes.
Assault Cruiser: (Macavenger, fill in.)
Typhoon Cruiser: 250 Shields, 80 Armor. 3 Turbolaser Turrets, 6 Star Cobras, 6 Starscreamers, 15 Torpedoes, Compressor Beam.
Jonathan Navarone spoke to a council of elite Rebellion members.
"As you may be aware, the Confederation has a new escort frigate, codenamed Osprey. We have come up with a prototype ship design to counter this. An armored frigate."
General Davies stepped in now. "This ship would have only 120 terawatt shielding, but five to six times the hull density found on a typical Rebel Cruiser. We have discovered a planet rich with an extremely dense metal that can be alloyed to form ship hulls. This ship would be armed with 5 Turbolaser turrets and a turreted Compressor beam which we are developing expressly for this purpose. It will also be be the second ship to carry the devastating Precision Bombs; an estimated 35 of these would be on this new ship."
Navarone returned now. "Well, gentlemen, we will leave you to vote on this matter now."
====================
I also have many other ideas for ship designs, so I may introduce these when needed.
/me returns from drawing board.
sattomax, here is the data on my Assault Carriers (not Cruiser)
Shield: 250 Armor: 50 Weapons: 4 Proton Turrets, 15 Torpedoes, 10 Missiles, 8 Mantas
These are modified Rebel Destroyers. They are slightly slower than standard Destroyers, because of the extra weapons. Being a only civilian who hates the Confeds, I still use standard technology. If you guys want to use these in a fleet, feel free to replace the Protons with your turbolasers.
I also have developed my own counter for the Osprey. It's a modification of the Assault Carrier, using one of David's own brainchilds against him:
Shields/Armor: same Weapons: 4 Proton Turrets, 20 missiles, 6 Heavy Rockets, 8 Firefoxes
The Firefoxes are a Rebel fighter from David's Talon plug, for those who haven't played it. They are faster and better shielded than a Manta, have 5 torpedoes instead of the Missiles, and include a Rocket. So, this design is better optimized to pick off fighters itself, and send heavy fighters against enemy capital ships. I think the long-range punch from Torpedoes and heavier shielding will give the fighters better odds against a ship with a particle beam turret.
Anyway, my fleet is currently back at Port Oread, trying to find new Destroyers to replace the ones lost at Antares. I'll be modifying some of my ships to the new anti-osprey specs.
And David, about the hyper-alarm at Ruby... just so you know, my fleet isn't large by this topic's standards, but I'm sure you could detect it anyway, so I'll give you that one, no problems.

You got most of those stats right. Here's your post with some minor changes:
Manta: 25 Shields, 0 Armor. 4 Turbolasers, one missile rack with two missiles, two javelin pods with 100 pod rockets (for realism's sake, let's say the Manta is too small to carry a compressor beam).
Star Cobra: 35 Shields, 10 Armor. 6 Turbolasers, 8 Missiles, 250 javelin rockets launched from two pods.
Starscreamer: 30 Shields, 5 Armor. 3 Turbolasers, 10 Precision Bombs, 5 Missiles. (Sounds good to me).
Rebel Destroyer: 260 Shields, 50 Armor. 6 Turbolaser Turrets, 15 Torpedoes, 15 missiles, heavy rocket launcher with five rockets, compressor bream.
Rebel Cruiser: 500 Shields, 100 Armor. 8 Turbolaser Turrets, 4 Mantas, 3 torpedo launchers with 30 torpedoes, 3 missile racks with 30 missiles, 2 heavy rocket launchers with ten rockets.
"C" Class Rebel Cruiser: 550 Shields, 150 Armor. 9 Turbolaser Turrets, 4 Star Cobras, 3 torpedo launchers with 30 torpedoes, 3 missile racks with 30 missiles, one heavy rocket launcher with five rockets, compressor beam.
Typhoon Cruiser: 250 Shields, 80 Armor. 4 Turbolaser Turrets, 6 Star Cobras, 6 Starscreamers, 10 Torpedoes, Compressor Beam (We need to give this ship a bit less armament if it carries this many fighters)
Anyway, hope this all works out. Remember, realism is everything...
Admiral Devon raced to President Navarone's office and burst into the room.
"Sorry for the interruption sir, but I must be quick. Overrider has just brought us more news. Hours ago, he left Centauri with some vital information of the Osprey prototype's whereabouts. Turns out, the ship is in route to Curzon, where it will be performing yet another routine testing run. If we hurry, we could send the Osprey a little surprise."
President Navarone placed his glasses on his desk and stroked his chin. "Contact General Skyblade immediately, and tell him to intercept the fleet that will be escorting the Osprey. He may choose the ships he likes to escort him, but be sure he knows that he must disable the Osprey, not destroy it. We need all the information we can get on the ship."
Admiral Devon was again happy to hear the Navarone approved of his plan.
"Very well, sir. I'll contact General Skyblade immediately and tell him of your plan. He's made it through Turin and Stardock Alpha alive, and he just might have a chance on this one. Thankyou for you permission, sir."
Jonathan Navarone received Devon's salute, and hoped the mission would suceed.
Skyblade, you might want to edit my stats into your post there, I posted mine before you did. Also, I'm gonna edit mine first a little, cause my shields and Armor are now inflated a tad, I was going off what sattomax put as the new technology.

Yes, sorry about that. The standard weapons I gave all those ships (except for the compressor beam) I had already planned on using for ships in the "Operation Overlord" plugin, so I thought they would work out fine here. Besides, Sattomax asked my to correct his stats if needed.
And remember guys, even though I don't take orders from rebel command, and technically don't know any, if you want support for a mission, I am well known to the rebellion so you can drop me a line, or the leaders/whatever can request it. If I'm in the area at the time, you'll probably get something.
Also, note that I'm in Tiber, and the Osprey stuff is in Curzon... Now note where these two are on the map... Also that I have a ship design specifically to counter capital ships such as that...
However, i know nothing about the planned assault.
David Arthur sat on the bridge of the C.N.S. Macdonald, the prototype Osprey strike frigate. A communications officer approached him. "Sir, Atinoda has informed us that eight more Ospreys are ready to enter the fleet."
"Good."
"Also, there's a call for you over FTL. The Secretary of Fringe Defence."
He took the call in his ready room. "Richard?"
"Could you by any chance spare a few of your cruisers?" asked the Secretary. "There's something important going on out here."
"You know, we're really busy with these rebel attacks. What is it?"
"Make that something important and classified."
"All right, I think I can spare a couple. Macdonald out." He activated the commlink to the MOD. "George, order the heavy cruisers C.N.S. Woodsworth and C.N.S. Aberhart to report to Hodgson's World."
Macavenger, feel free to use the Firefox, although don't be surprised if the SD Boat shows up sometime. For the benefit of anyone who hasn't seen it, you can find my Talon plugin which contains it at (url="http://"http://members.aol.com/DArthur1/talon-ev/")my site(/url).

Fine, David, I'm really not that scared of the SD boats. They're rather slow and poorly armed for shields that good on a fighter, so I think we can take 'em.
For the everyone else out there, a preview of what may be coming:
Confed SD (Stellar Defense) Boat
Shields/Armor: Can't remember exactly, somewhere around Corvette grade. Weapons: 1 Proton Turret, 3 Missiles, 3 Torpedoes, 2 Heavy Rockets Somewhat slower than the Gunboats.
