Didya miss me? (Long story short; I seriously overdid a "natural remedy" for a cold, altering my body's pH to the point I went into shock. I've been under virtual 24-hour doctor's care for two weeks. Really dumb....)
Anyway, on one of these threads I vowed to prove to myself the Alien Mission could be done in a 'Vette (without the Fork). (Trouble is, I cannot find the thread where I boasted I could do it....)
It really was EASY in a 'Vette. Once I got the mission I "zig-zagged" my way to the system, making sure to upgrade properly. I maxed-out the Mass Expansions, Proton guns, Proton Turrets, shields, boosters and those plasma refresher things. I kept one Torp launcher and 6 Torps.
When I jumped into the system the Alien Fighters were engaged with some Government fighters so I went straight for the Alien Cruiser, locked on him with Autopilot and full throttle (what I call the "Rosie") and let him have it with my proton arsenal. His shields were going down, but pretty slowly, so I added all six torps to my Rosie barrage. That put his shields down around 20%. Good.
The one problem at this point was I "Rosied" my ship right into one (two?) of his red mines. Zowie! My own shields were gone and I was immediately down to about half my armour. I decided to take my chances and keep at him.
My armour held at 50%. His sheilds were down to 6%.
Second problem: I guess it was the danger to the Cruiser's sheild that brought them, but the Alien Fighters suddenly ignored anybody but me. Yikes!
The good thing was the Fighters could not seem to coordinate with the Cruiser with me Rosie-ing him. The Cruiser kept juking one way and another, preventing the Fighters from being able to get a lock on me. My armour was still only 50% but the Cruiser's sheilds rapidly disappeared -- as did the Cruiser.
The Fighters could now lock on me, so I scooted out of there and jumped to an adjoining system.
How about that? It can be done. Who needs a Kestrel?

Cool...actually, I would imagine it would be easier in a Corve becasue of the faster shield recharge...
I've killed the Crusier with a Rapier before, but the Fighters killed me before I could finish the mission. The hard part about using a Rapier is doing the missions up to it to get the correct bits set (and the tractor beam). And those pesky fighters, of course.

About ten minutes ago, I just decimated the alien cruiser with my corvette (with armplast, duraplast, proton cannons and turrets to the max, a shiled capacitator, four sheild boosters, and all three manuverability upgrades). I found that it was not nearly as difficult as I though it would be. All I did was keep circling around behind the big lug so that it could not devistate me with that big nasty beam he has. We were both moving south down the screen at a fairly slow rate, so the fighters could only engage me sporadically. It took a while and I barely made it, (my shields were about 20%) but I now feel that I have really accomplished something in this game. Now that the rebellion rewarded me very handsomely, I plan on skipping the Kestrel and going on to a rebel cruiser. Good luck to anyone else who feels brave enough to tackle a cruiser with a vette!
P.S. - Is it possible to start the confederation missions in a rebel ship?

Nope. One or the other.
No, it is possible, it's just that the Confeds would attack you because the inherent government is Rebellion, and you would have to capture the Rebel ship.
As for destroying the Alien Cruiser in a 'Vette, I've done it before. In fact, I've ONLY done it in a 'Vette, nothing else.

Yeah, same here. And really, I wouldn't do it in anythinb BUT the Corvette. It's fast, powerpacked, and I've taken out an alien cruiser while be attacked by a whole FLEET of alien cruisers and got out of it without a stratch.
Offside note: that plug was one of my own, and I do not intend to release it.

I almost always use a Kestrel, though I've beat the mission in a Rapier. With the Kestrel, your Lightnings can usually bang up the fighters pretty good, while you and your escorts (which is usually in my case two Rebel Cruisers and my own corvettes) get the big one.

Eh, ignore the fighters, go for the big cheese. I, personally, can take down an Alien Cruiser in 20 seconds piloting only an enhanced Corvette with the following weapons; as many laser cannons and laser turrets as it can hold. Lasers are the ideal weapon for fighting aliens. Fast reload, damages pretty much only shields, and with 5 guns and 2 turrets firing point blank at an alien cruiser's hull the results appear quite quickly.

You got it, Rawzer. Ring Around the Rosie....

Very impressive, you guys.
Now, try it with a shuttlecraft like I did.
------------------
The alien mission is easy in anything with a turret. My hat goes off to anyone who did it in a shuttlecraft (the proper way, no forks or anything) as I find it hard in anything with fixed guns, though I did have fun with my Rapier. If you want to impress me, it has to be at least a light freighter (not an argosy, or anything that's manoeverable), though anyone who has done it in a scoutship has done well. I did the alien mission in a corvette the first time I ever did it because I hadn't scraped together enough cash to buy a kestrel... and I still had the laser turrets. Sorry to hear about the natural remedy problem KK - next time, just use hard drugs, you'll soon forget that you have a cold.

Eh, well, I can say I never did it in anything smaller than a Corvette, however, I geuss I could do it in a scoutship. I'm not sure, but I think I could....

Very true. The Alien Cruiser is normally quite easy to take out, so long as the battle is fought with speed, and you can stay away from his heavy fusion beam. But with the Kestrel (which I always buy upgrades for), I load it with protons turrets and cannons, and it does the job quite nicely. But the alien fighters are a different story. Even with the help of my escort corvettes, they are a pain to destroy.
The best (and I fear, the only) way to destroy alien fighters is to have the tractor beam and excellent laser or proton firepower. Weapons with ammunitions are uninteresting, because at long range the time you meet the Fighter afterwards he has his shields recharged, and at short range it makes the light ship go out of the tractor beam's range. I think I have barely destroyed one, maybe two alien fighters. However, alien Cruisers are so easy to kill, even with an Argosy (I'll try with an unupgraded one).

Wow, you sure fight with style! I almost always use the tractor beam if possible, while feeding my three proton turrets and around four proton cannons at the sucker. The Alien fighters themselves don't have the deadliest firepower; it's the shield recharge rate you have to worry about.

Not really. There's always space bombs and forklifts.

Ouch. I'd hate doing THAT.
I think I only did it in a Kestral once, the first time. Then I tried in a Corvette, and it was easier. Also, I have beaten the mission in a scoutship before, I'll let you guys guess how.
<cryptic grin>
Ooh, was that fun.
( )Also, how do you do it in a shuttle without cheats? I don't think Monty Python would work cause the beam is long range and instant, and I don't think you could make much progress on the shields anyway with 3 lasers.(/ )
------------------ So go on the internet game sites and bash all the PC users!
I've done it in a clipper. I had: one proton turret, two laser cannons, a shield booster, a shield capacitor, and a layer of armaplast (that's the one that weighs five tons right?). I will try it in a scoutship, It shouldn't be too much harder
